Age: 39 years old
Height and Weight: 5'4 - 5'5, 140 pounds

Details of Disappearance

Boomer visited Uncle Mike's Bar in the 4900 block of Metropolitan Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas, near her own residence, on February 23, 1999. She originally went there with a roommate. The roommate left after finishing her drink, and planned to pick up Boomer later. When she called the bar later that day, she was told Boomer had already left with two men. Boomer was carrying a purse with $80 cash at the time of her disappearance.

Witnesses at the establishment told authorities that she was involved in an altercation with another patron during the evening. The individual is believed to be a career criminal with a history of violent behavior towards women. He allegedly knocked Boomer to the ground and beat her, causing her to lose consciousness. She has never been heard from again. Authorities believe she may have been murdered in the bar and her body hidden in another location.

Two men were charged with second-degree murder in Boomer's case, but the charges were dismissed because witnesses to the alleged crime refused to testify. Authorities believe that several people have information related to Boomer's case, but the individuals have not come forward. Foul play is suspected in Boomer's disappearance due to the circumstances involved.

Boomer resided in the 1700 block of south 49th Street in Kansas City in 1999. She had dropped out of Turner High School, but was studying for her GED certificate. She planned to move back in with her parents. Boomer has a young son. Her case remains unsolved.

After 7 years, murder victim still missing

02-15-2006

Star Boomer would have been 46 years old today. Her family, especially her sister, Cynthia Hurtie will remember her bright, quick smile. Boomer's son, now 10, is being raised by his grandparents in Spring Hill. "We believe she was murdered on my birthday, Feb. 23, 1999, seven years ago," Cynthia Hurtie said on Tuesday. It took her 10 years to pay for her sister's funeral. Now she is working on purchasing a tombstone.

Boomer has never had a proper funeral because her body has never been found. Boomer was a patron at Uncle Mike's Bar, 49th and Metropolitan, when she allegedly got into a violent fight with a man. "There were about 13 witnesses who saw her get knocked to the ground and beaten until she was unconscious," said Hurtie. "No one lifted a finger to help her." That was the last time anyone saw her. Two men were arrested and charged with second degree murder by District Attorney Nick Tomasic, but were later released and charges dismissed because witnesses did not come forth. Hurtie hopes that perhaps some of the witnesses will reconsider and agree to testify. "There are people who know what happened," she said. Evidence also disappeared according to Hurtie. She said that the police were unable to search a truck owned by one of the suspects. Another vehicle, owned by the bartending girlfriend of one of the alleged perpetrators, was found burned, Hurtie said. "I can only wonder if they burned it to destroy evidence, or maybe it was an attempt to intimidate her," she said. "He married her and she could not testify against him." "The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the KCK Police Department are continuing the investigation," Hurtie said.

A $6,000 Governor's Reward was put into effect by Gov. Bill Graves. People with information can call the KCKPD homicide and robbery unit at 913-673-6010 or the KBI, 1-800-KS CRIME. Persons can also call 4740-TIPS. She is listed with the National Center for Missing Adults. Boomer had gone to the tavern with her friend and roommate, Carolyn Marshall, Hurtie said. A local news story reported that the tavern was near their home. Marshall had a drink and headed home, planning to return in a few hours to pick up her roommate. When she arrived at the bar, she was told that Boomer had left with two men. Investigators said it was believed that Boomer was killed in the bar and her body was dumped elsewhere. Boomer grew up not far from the bar. She had attended Turner High School and had dropped out but was studying for a GED when she disappeared.

She was planning to move to Spring Hill to live with her parents until she could get back on her feet. Hurtie said she does not know if Boomer knew her attacker well, but in a newspaper article, Marshall said she saw a man knock her down to the floor, jerking off her bar stool, while she was there. Marshall reportedly said she didn't think they even said anything to each other. The man was hustled out the back door of the bar. Boomer got up and dusted herself off and sat at the bar, according to Marshall. "The whole thing is horrifying," Hurtie said. "I still pursue it. I go to the media as much as I can. It has affected us a lot. Star's boy is 10 years old now and he does pretty well, but all our family wants to know where Star is.

We would like to have a funeral for her." She said the alleged perpetrators are still in the area. "I will continue to pursue this until my family finds justice and closure," Hurtie said. "She was a human being and does not deserve to be thrown away like trash." Hurtie said she has tried psychics, including the famous Sylvia Brown, but was very disappointed. She is now using the services of a detective with a cadaver-sniffing dog in the area. "I have searched the woods in that area," Hurtie said. She hopes that someday, something will turn up, or a witness can come forth. Hurtie is in the nursing business with a few home health patients. "I can't sleep and it is hard for me to hold an 8 to 5 job," she said. "I have to have flexible time to continue to be devoted to this. I can't give up. I don't mean for this to be an obsession but I want justice for her."

Project Jason does NOT recommend the use of psychics in missing persons cases. There is not a single proven case in which a missing person was found using paranormal means. Use of psychics wastes police and other resources, causes prejudice against the case, and emotional harm to the families.

Possible Link Between Missing Missouri Mother and 10-Year-Old Mystery
Monday, February 02, 2009
MyFOXKC.com

While the case of a missing mother from Missouri remains a mystery to law enforcement, but a possible link to another woman's disappearance may be emerging.

Renee Pernice vanished from her Northland home last month. Shon Pernice, her husband, whom she was in the process of divorcing, was the last person to see her alive.

Ten years ago, another woman, Star Boomer, disappeared from a bar in Kansas City and hasn't been seen since. On that night in February of 1999, Shon Pernice was at the same bar, sources told FOX4KC.com.

Witnesses said Boomer got into a fight with a man at the bar. Two men were originally charged with second-degree murder, but the case was eventually dropped to avoid "double jeopardy."

Boomer’s family believes it was because none of the witnesses at the bar that night would testify.

"There were 13 witnesses in the bar and no one wants to come forward or say anything," Cynthia Hurtie, Star’s sister, told FOX4KC.com.

Hurtie, now a private investigator, has never stopped trying to solve her sister’s case. When she heard about the specifics of Renee’s case she said, “My heart just fell to my stomach. I just put two and two together, there were two witnesses and Shon was one of them.”

Although Shon Pernice was never on the list of official court witnesses, he has been linked to the Boomer investigation, according to FOX4KC.com sources.

“Until the day we find closure and justice for her, I can’t give up. I have to be a voice for Star,” said Hurtie.

Boomer’s mother, Hazel Hurtie, holds out hope that her daughter will be found.

"I believe that we will find her," she told FOX4KC.com. "I really believe that. I have never given up hope."

Shon Pernice and his attorney could not be reached for comment about the story.

There is a $5,000 reward for information in the Star Boomer case.

Mother Hopes Shon Pernice Will Reveal More Secrets

POSTED 3:10 PM, FEBRUARY 22, 2012, BY MICHELLE PEKARSKY, UPDATED AT 11:19AM, FEBRUARY 23, 2012

SPRING HILL, Kan. — A Spring Hill, Kan., mother whose daughter has been missing since February 1999 hopes Shon Pernice will now tell police the secrets she believes he knows about the night her daughter disappeared.

In an emergency hearing Tuesday afternoon, Shon Pernice stood before a Clay County judge to plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the death of his wife, Renee Pernice, who disappeared in January of 2009 and whose body has never been found.

For three years, Shon Pernice denied having anything to do with his wife’s disappearance, but on Tuesday he admitted that he hit her during a violent fight, knocking her down the stairs and killing her. He said he disposed of her body in the trash.

Hazel Hurtie’s daughter, Star Boomer, disappeared 12 years ago, and according to a former prosecutor, Shon Pernice was among the last people to see her alive.

Hurtie, 77, said Star was out at a bar at 49th & Metropolitan in Kansas City, Kan., when she stepped in to defend a woman who was in a fight with a man. Star’s arm was injured in the fight and Hurtie said it was Shon Pernice who bandaged her arm and gave her some medication. Star Boomer was then reportedly carried out of the bar by two men.

Police and prosecutors questioned more than a dozen people present at the bar that night but no one could or would positively identify the men.

Hurtie believes Pernice and others at the bar know more than they revealed to police and hopes now that Pernice has confessed to one crime, he will also reveal what he knows about another.
