Police seek public's help in locating missing man

Middleton and State Police are asking for the public's help in locating a 26-year-old Middleton man, who has been missing since late last month.

John Lima, of River Street, was last seen at his home on the afternoon of Friday, Oct. 28. Police investigators have not ruled out foul play.

Lima is a white male, 5 feet 10 inches tall, 170 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He has tattoos on his arms and back.

After three weeks, 26-year-old still missing

MIDDLETON - Three weeks ago today, John Lima vanished.

Police and relatives are continuing their search for the 26-year-old construction worker, who was last seen at his family's River Street home on Friday, Oct. 28.

No one knows if Lima simply walked away from his home or if someone may have hurt him.

"My family is leaning toward foul play, and so am I," Lima's sister, Liz White, said yesterday.

To date, police have combed Lima's neighborhood with search dogs. A state police helicopter flew over the area looking for him. Yesterday, the district attorney's office sent out a media alert about his disappearance.

Family of missing man increases reward to $20K

MIDDLETON - The family of a 26-year-old River Street man missing since October is increasing the reward to $20,000 for any information leading to his whereabouts.

John Lima disappeared Oct. 28 when he left his girlfriend's home in Chelsea at 1:30 a.m. He is believed to have arrived home at 2 a.m. at 28 River St., where he lived with his parents.

"We literally have nothing to go on - just frustration after frustration after frustration," said Lima's sister, Liz White. "We didn't know what else to do. Since we do believe foul play (was involved in his disappearance), the money will hopefully make some of these people that know what happened talk. Because somebody does know what happened."

Reward hiked for clues on missing man

Last week, the family of a Middleton man who has been missing since last fall increased its reward offer to $20,000 for information leading to his whereabouts.

John Lima, 26, a construction worker, was last seen at his family's River Street home on the evening of Oct. 28, according to the office of Essex District Attorney Jonathan W. Blodgett.

Middleton and State police assigned to Blodgett's office have questioned numerous people about Lima's disappearance, and have combed the area of his residence with search dogs.

But as of yet there have been no firm leads on his whereabouts, according to Blodgett's spokesman, Steve O'Connell.

He said authorities have not ruled out foul play.

Details of Disappearance

Lima was last seen at 1:30 a.m. on October 28, 2005, when he left his girlfriend's Chelsea, Massashusetts home. He is believed to have arrived at his own residence at south Main Street and River Street in Middleton, Massachusetts at 2:00 a.m.; a neighbor saw his vehicle there. He has never been heard from again.

Lima was employed as a construction worker at the time of his disappearance, and resided with his parents. His family believes he met with foul play and police are not ruling that possibility out. His case remains unsolved. Middleton police are investigating.

Family offers $25K reward in man's disappearance

MIDDLETON - Things can change a lot in three years, and that's one of the things that has kept the Lima family of Middleton going since John Lima disappeared one night in 2005.

"Alliances change," said Liz White, Lima's sister. "Maybe someone who knows what happened will decide now to come forward."

The Lima family announced yesterday that they have increased the reward for information leading to Lima's whereabouts, from $20,000 to $25,000.

"Twenty-five thousand dollars is a lot of money, and maybe that will be enough to drive someone," White said. She said she hopes the amount - a significant amount for the family - will push someone to do the right thing and help Lima's family find him.

"That number sounds big," White said. "Maybe people will pay attention."

Lima was 26 when he disappeared sometime during the night of Oct. 28, 2005. His parents heard his Toyota Avalon pull into the driveway of their River Street home around 2 a.m. but didn't see him come inside, though his wallet, sneakers, keys and a pack of cigarettes were all still inside the house.

The next morning, they noticed an open window at the front of the house.

White wonders whether her brother slipped outside to meet someone, thinking he would be right back, and was instead led into some sort of trap.

His cell phone died shortly after he disappeared, and investigators believe it was destroyed. He had no credit cards or cash on him.

Lima had been in trouble in the past but had been working to turn his life around in the four months before he disappeared.

"John wasn't involved in good things," White said. "That's not the point."

At first, investigators told the family that Lima may have just run away. "We know John," said his sister. "We know how he was. He did not just walk away. We know there was foul play."

Investigators have not ruled that in or out and have followed up leads, but so far nothing has panned out. "They still have nothing, not even to pull us in one direction or another," said White, who credits Middleton police Sgt. Gayle Haley and Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett for their continuing interest in the case.

Lima, who is now 29, is 5-foot-10 and weighed 170 at the time of his disappearance. He has brown eyes and hair and tattoos on both arms and his back.

Middleton Man Still Missing After 5 Years

MIDDLETON (CBS) — Five years ago, Maria Lima said goodbye to her son John before racing off to work. She didn’t know then, it would be the last time she would see him. John, 26, disappeared from their Middleton home without a trace. Now, every time she sees a tall young man on the street, she thinks it might be John.

“I have to go close to see if it’s him,” she said.

On October 28, 2005, Lima heard her son drive up to their house about 2 a.m. She looked out the window, saw his car and went back to bed.  The next morning, his car, keys and wallet were all still there, but John was gone.

“I thought one day or one week I would find him, it’s been five years.”

The family admits John had a drug problem, but they say he was turning his life around.  Police believe he left the house through a window, perhaps to meet someone.

The family didn’t report John missing for two days. It was Halloween weekend and they thought he was with friends.

Unfortunately, they raked the yard and there was even a small snow storm, so by the time police got there with search dogs, any evidence was gone.

The family is offering a $30,000 reward for information in the case.

Sgt. Gayle Haley has been on the case since the beginning. She checks in with the Lima’s once or twice a month. She believes someone out there knows something that could help.

“Definitely,” said Haley.  “The information that somebody might have that they think isn’t important could be the key to breaking this case.”

John’s sister Liz White has been busy raising her two children the past five years and running her gift shop. But her thoughts are never far from her baby brother.

“A day doesn’t go by that we don’t think about him,” she said.  “We either grieve or we are hopeful.  It’s just that up and down, it’s an awful thing to go through.”

The family is hoping and praying the reward will help them find John and end this suffering.  Maria Lima describes it as “hell.”
