10 years later, no justice for Gina Bos

By ZACH PLUHACEK / Lincoln Journal Star JournalStar.com | Posted: Saturday, October 16, 2010 11:35 pm |

It's been 10 years since Regina Marie Bos disappeared. The lead investigator in her case doesn't need to mark it on his calendar.

"For the last 10 years I've been doing this -- so I remember it," Lincoln Police Sgt. Greg Sorensen said. "I just want to find out who killed her and put him in jail."

Gina Bos left home on Oct. 17, 2000, to sing at an open mic night at Duggan's Pub, just south of downtown. She left the bar shortly before close and never made it home.

Even though her body was never found, Sorensen and Bos' sisters are almost certain she's dead.

Sorensen has said he thinks he's talked to her killer, but he won't say more.

"There's somebody in Lincoln walking around that knows what happened to Gina," says her oldest sister, Jannel Rap, a singer song-writer who lives in Southern California. "They know, and they can help us."

Usually, Rap's Squeaky Wheel concert tour -- she helps put it on to bring attention to missing people around the world -- starts Oct. 17 and ends on Bos' birthday, Nov. 4.

This year, she's hoping to make more noise and said the tour will last for a year and 19 days.

"We have hundreds of artists that are participating at this point, and the events are all over the world.

"We're starting out slow, and then by next year, it's going to be very large."

Even though so much time has passed, Rap says the family is still learning to deal with the loss.

"It's very difficult. Not only did we lose her, but we've lost portions of our own lives."

It didn't come to a head for Rap until the day after Christmas last year, when the holidays combined with relationship and family troubles, she says.

"I had to acknowledge that I can't -- I can't make this better. I can't take this away. ... I had to grieve for the loss of her and the loss of 10 years in a way, cause I've thrown my world into this. My whole life changed.

"(But) my life is more important now than trying to solve this.

"My sister's life is gone, but I still have mine."

Anyone with information on Gina Bos' whereabouts can call Lincoln Police Sgt. Greg Sorensen at 402-441-7708.

The Squeaky Wheel Tour for Missing Persons

By Dave Good | Published Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2010

On October 17, 2000, Regina Marie Bos, a 40-year-old mother of three, performed during an open mic at Duggan’s Pub, a neighborhood saloon near her home in Lincoln, Nebraska. Her Saturn was parked across the street. Known as Gina, Bos left Duggan’s at closing time, stowed her guitar case in the trunk of her car, and then disappeared without a trace. Gina Bos was neither seen nor heard from again.

Finding out what became of Bos would turn into a life’s cause for her sister, Jannel Rap. After Lincoln police and private investigators failed to turn up any clues, Rap founded a nonprofit and named it the GINA for Missing Persons FOUNDation in honor of her sister.

“In the past ten years,” says Del Mar Heights singer-songwriter James Morris, “411GINA has worked with the families of missing people, local law enforcement, and music artists to help find 500 missing people.”

Morris is 15 and a sophomore at Cathedral Catholic High School in Carmel Valley. To date, he has performed at house parties, Soma, and the San Diego County Fair. “I play a lot of charity shows. I’m hoping to expand that.” He met Jannel Rap last year at a music-industry convention in Las Vegas.

There, he learned about the GINA annual fundraiser called the Squeaky Wheel Tour. This year, it kicks off in San Diego. Morris says the venue is undecided as yet but that he will be a part of the tour.

“During the Squeaky Wheel Tour, we bring all the missing people to attention that families and law enforcement have asked us to work on.” Morris says that tour artists “adopt” a missing person and talk about them onstage. He says the cause resonates with him because teenagers are the largest demographic of missing people. “As a high school student, it was horrific to watch the tragedies of Chelsea King and Amber Dubois unfold. I remember seeing Amber’s grandfather every day at church for the longest time. I hope my efforts can help prevent more tragedies like these from occurring.”

In the past, the Squeaky Wheel Tour has gotten a hand from national touring acts (“Maroon 5 has helped us out several times,” says Jannel Rap), and the outreach, Rap says, has become global as musicians around the world in various countries have taken on the cause. “This year is different,” Rap says, as she is kicking off the Year of the Squeaky Wheel in recognition of the tenth anniversary of her sister’s disappearance. More information about the coming tour can be found at 411GINA.org.

Cindy Lange-Kubick: In search of the missing -- and a long-lost sister

Tuesday, November 1, 2011 9:00 am

Tips still trickle in about the missing Lincoln woman, all of them dead ends as far as her sister knows.

It's why Jannel Rap keeps coming back every autumn, just about this time. Just about the time her sister, Gina Bos -- a dark-haired, petite, guitar-slinging mom -- disappeared outside Duggan's Pub at closing time.

Jannel -- a blond-headed, petite, guitar-slinging mom -- spent those first few years numb and searching, using her music to shine a light on her musician sister who played and sang that Sunday night, Oct. 17, 2000, put her guitar in her trunk and, before she could latch it shut, vanished.

That first helpless year, Jannel started hosting something she called Gina Concerts. Five years later, she kicked off The Squeaky Wheel Tour, touring towns across the country with one goal: Find the missing.

"It's been 11 years for me," Jannel said Friday from her home in Southern California. "I know people who are new to this and people who have 30 years missing their loved ones."

She'll be in town Tuesday, playing with her youngest son at Dietze Music's downtown store. Local musicians are invited to join them.

12 years later, Lincoln woman still searching for sister

By: Megan Palera

12 years ago Wednesday, Gina Bos disappeared. Every year, on that anniversary, her sister travels back to Lincoln to raise awareness for all those still missing across the country.

On October 17, 2000, Gina Bos mysteriously vanished after a performance at Duggan's Pub in Lincoln. The only thing ever found was her guitar. So her sister, Jannel Rap, picked it up and began singing - searching for any clue to Gina's disappearance.

"When someone's been missing for 12 years, if you don't get their name out, people think they're already found," Rap said.

What began as the GINA Foundation, turned into an international music tour called the "Squeaky Wheel." Every year, Rap and other artists perform in venues like the Meadowlark Coffee shop in Lincoln. She tries to raise awareness by asking the public to adopt a missing person, all in hopes of bringing one home like Iowa teen Erin Pospisil.

(Do you still have hope that she'll be found?) "Always. If I didn't, I don't know how I'd get up tomorrow," Erin's mom, Carolyn said.

Although Rap is not sure her sister will ever be found, she continues to sing for these missing faces and their loved ones who are still searching.

"The very first year, somebody was found and I had not anticipated that because I thought I can't find my own sister, how could I find anybody else's sister?" Rap said.

To date, Rap's non-profit has helped to find over 1,100 missing people.

Concert will shine a light on missing persons

By CLARE MARIE CELANO
Staff Writer

Maire Tashjian of the musical duo Virago was astounded when she learned that thousands of people in the United States go missing each year. To help raise awareness of the issue, Tashjian and her musical partner, Amy Schindler, both of Old Bridge, are giving a boost to the Gina for Missing Persons Foundation.

Virago will perform at a fundraising concert to be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 3 at the American Legion, 62 W. Main St., Freehold Borough. The event will benefit the foundation in its quest to locate individuals who have gone missing. The suggested donation is $10.

“The Squeaky Wheel Fundraiser for Missing Persons” will include an appearance by Jannel Rap of Anaheim, Calif., who founded the organization in the name of her sister, Gina Bos.

Bos went missing on Oct. 17, 2000, after a performance in Lincoln, Neb. Her car was found the next day with her guitar in the trunk, but there was no sign of Bos. She has not been seen since that date.

Also performing on Aug. 3 will be Jimmy Arcoleo and Gene Walk.

Tashjian said Rap realized during her attempts to find Bos that many families were facing the same hurdles. Tashjian said many people vanish in cases that do not attract widespread or sustained media attention. Rap’s goal is to bring attention to those individuals. “Looking at the foundation’s website, it struck my heart and soul. It’s a worthy cause, and we want to make a difference,” Tashjian said.

Tashjian said Schindler became acquainted with Rap through social networking and through their music connections. “Jannel reached out to Amy,” she said.

Tashjian said her brother Tommy has been a big help in planning the event.

Rap will perform her song, “October 17,” at the American Legion. Information about missing persons from this region will be presented during the performance.

“The foundation’s mission is twofold: to shine a light on missing persons so they are not forgotten, and to educate the public,” Tashjian said.

Information will be presented about four women from the central New Jersey region who have gone missing: Diana Moreno Acevedo of Freehold Borough, missing since Feb. 20, 2003; Jamie Diane Seymour of Brick Township, missing since July 22, 2005; Anastasya Ovetsky of East Brunswick, missing since July 19, 1999; and Charlotte Jean Loomis of Eatontown, missing since Sept. 1, 1972.

Tashjian said more than 1,100 missing persons featured in the events and programs of the foundation have been found because of the collective efforts of cooperating nonprofit organizations, law enforcement agencies, artists, families of the missing individuals, and the media that support this work.

“All of these missing people … they are all Ginas,” Tashjian said

Celebrating the life of Gina Bos, a missing loved one

By CINDY LANGE-KUBICK | LINCOLN JOURNAL STAR

09/09/2015

The family gathered this summer in Arizona, celebrating their parents' 60 years together.

Everyone was there but Carlos and Dee Rap’s musical middle child, Gina Bos, missing now for nearly 15 years.

“My dad’s been kind of teary lately,” said their daughter Jannel Rap. “He said, 'We have to do something for Gina.'”

Rap and her siblings are calling that something Gina’s Celebration of Life, and it will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Roberts Park at 60th and A streets.

Gina’s parents, who retired to Phoenix to be closer to grown children there, will come back to Lincoln. Gina's siblings and children will attend.

The public -- those who knew her, those who looked for her, those who hold her in their hearts -- is invited.

Gina Bos disappeared on Oct. 17, 2000, after playing guitar and singing at an open mic night at Duggan’s Pub, south of downtown.

Her car was still parked outside the next morning, trunk ajar, guitar inside. There have been leads and speculation about the disappearance of the 40-year-old mother of three, but no arrests.

“It will remain an active missing person case until she is located,” said Lincoln Police Officer Katie Flood. “Each lead that comes in is investigated, in hope that it is the one that will lead to closure.”

The family hasn’t given up on finding her, either.

“Just because we’re doing a celebration of life doesn't  mean we are going to stop looking or stop trying to find out what happened to her,” said Jannel Rap, a musician in California.

The celebration will include pictures and videos and music.

The seven Rap kids grew up in north Lincoln, sons and daughters of a traveling pastor and his wife.

For entertainment they’d load into the station wagon for a drive. The kids would sing loud, the windows rolled down. Gospel music from church. Popular tunes like “Delta Dawn” and silly songs like “Yellow Polka Dot Bikini.”

There will be some of that Saturday. “A medley of goofy songs,” said Rap.

And there will be more serious music, too. Jannel Rap has partnered with Bos’ 26-year-old daughter to write a tribute song for her.

They’ve been Skyping each other and calling, collaborating on the lyrics and tune.

They have a working title: “Waiting for Nothing.”

The premise is simple.

“We’re rewriting her story,” her sister said. “You’re not missing. You never were.”
