Joshua "Josh" C. Guimond

Beloved Friend Missing From College Campus
Posted Image
This is a photo of Josh from right before his high school graduation.

Joshua Guimond was last seen on the campus of St. John's University in Collegeville, Minnesota.  He was leaving a get-together at Metten Court, an on-campus dorm,  to travel back to his own on-campus apartment. Even though this was a short distance, he never made it back to his apartment.

The night of November 9, 2002 was the last time anyone saw or heard from Joshua.   When he disappeared he was wearing a gray St. John's sweatshirt and blue jeans. He is 22-years-old and stands at 6' with blond hair.

Josh, as his friends call him, was a Junior at St. John's University.  He studied Political Science, was a member of Mock Trial, and a member of the SJU College Republicans. Josh's friends describe him as an overachiever. His closest friends say that he pushed everyone to excel, not just himself. Josh had plans to go to law school after graduating from St. John's. He had goals of serving in the Minnesota House of Representatives.

Friends and family say that Josh's life was so well-planned that this disappearance has to be foul play.

His parents, from Maple Lake, Minnesota, are convinced that he must have been taken against his will.  He did not have his glasses, his car, his credit cards, or even a coat that was appropriate for the weather. Also there were no belongings missing from his apartment.

"I'll just remember that my junior year of college was hell", Greg Worden, friend and previous roommate.

The Search Continues

Posted Image
This is a photo taken of Josh shortly before his disappearence. The community in Collegeville, Minnesota has been extremely supportive in the search for Josh.  A "Find Joshua Sign" leaned against the stone wall at the entrance to the college.  Many students were sporting a yellow ribbon on backpacks and jackets as a symbol of hope for Josh's safe return.

Police say they have searched the grounds and lakes near St. John's University thoroughly.  The Sterns County Sheriff's Department searched the area on foot and on horseback.

The Sheriffs also brought the Trident Foundation to the area to search.  The Trident Foundation provides technical support in water searches.

Overwhelming support has not only come from Josh's friends and family, but also from St. John's University. The president of the University has pledged to keep the search active in the hopes that Josh will safely return.

Contact  Stearns County Sheriff's Office at (320) 259-3700 with any information on Joshua Guimond's case.

St. John's Student Still Missing After 7 Years

Posted Image

Josh Guimond

11/03/2009

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. (AP) - It's been nearly seven years since St. John's University student Josh Guimond disappeared after leaving a small card party about midnight.

His friends and family will return to Collegeville next week to mark the Nov. 9 anniversary. There will be public events to remember Guimond, and to demand answers.

On Saturday the inaugural "Justice for Josh" march will be at noon near St. John's. There will also be a march at the Stearns County Sheriff's office at 2:00 p.m.

The family maintains that Guimond was taken against his will, and they're asking the sheriff's office to release all the information it has on the case.

Sheriff John Sanner says his office has spent thousands of hours on the case and he's just as frustrated as the family that it hasn't been solved.

Seven years on, no signs of missing St. John's student

November 9, 2009
Tim Nelson

St. Paul, Minn. — Monday, Nov. 9 marks the seventh anniversary of the disappearance of Josh Guimond, a St. John's University student from Maple Lake.

A "Justice for Josh" march was held over the weekend near St. John's. Guimont was last seen at a small card game with friends on the night he vanished. His grandfather, Bob Guimond, said Josh got up and left the room.

"He told a couple of kids there he was going back to his dorm, and some of the other ones just assumed he went to the bathroom. He walked out and that's the last we seen of him. He was gone," Bob Guimond said.

His dorm was only minutes away by foot, but he never returned. He left without his keys, glasses or other personal effects.

Stearns County Sheriff John Sanner said the search for Josh Guimond has been extensive.

"We, of course, organized a search party to start looking through the campus area, and checking with family, friends and that type of thing," he said. "It got so involved that we even had the National Guard involved shortly thereafter and we even had the Trident Foundation out of Colorado come and search the waterways for us out by St. John's University."

The Guimond family suspects foul play and Sanner said the case remains open. The Sheriff said a detective remains assigned to the case, and checks regularly for new leads in Josh Guimond's disappearance.

Minn. man who vanished in '02 not forgotten

November 11, 2012

MAPLE LAKE, Minn. (AP) -- It's been 10 years since a St. John's University student disappeared, and his family and friends say they still ache over the lack of closure.

About 100 people crowded into a Maple Lake church Saturday to remember Josh Guimond. A St. Cloud Times report says supporters shared stories and fond memories of him.

Guimond was last seen leaving a friend's apartment in 2002. Every year since then, friends and family gather to keep his memory alive.

Lisa Cheney says she's grateful that people still remember her son. She says there are times when it feels like she's the only one who remembers him, and then she's reminded how many people still think of him.

Cheney said she holds out hope that someone who knows what happened will come forward.

New, age-enhanced photo of Josh Guimond, still missing after 10 years

by Lindsey LaBelle

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. (KMSP) -
Family and friends have not lost hope in the search for Josh Guimond, the St. John's University student who was reported missing Nov. 10, 2002.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension released an age-enhanced photo of Guimond to bring renewed awareness to his case. All searches thus far have been unsuccessful, but as three women in Cleveland proved this week, it's important to always be aware of one's surroundings.

Guimond was last seen leaving a friend's apartment on campus over ten years ago -- no one knows what happened on the walk back to his dorm. Each year, friends and family gather to share stories and keep him in their hearts.

12 years later, Guimond’s father suspects a ‘set-up’

November 20, 2014

by Dennis Dalman

After 12 long years, all that remains of Joshua Guimond is memories combined with sadness, fears, anger and a total sense of bafflement.

Guimond’s father, Brian, in a Newsleader interview Nov. 18, said he believes his son was abducted in a “set-up” and that he’s still alive, somewhere, kept against his will.

The 20-year-old college student just “disappeared” from the St. John’s University campus shortly after midnight Nov. 10, 2002. Despite massive searches, no trace of him has ever been found; no new clues or other information has surfaced as to what happened to him.

The disappearance of Joshua in 2002 and the abduction of Jacob Wetterling in 1989 both happened in the St. Joseph area, and both are equally as baffling, remaining unsolved after so many years.

Guimond’s parents, fellow students and acquaintances remain deeply disturbed by the disappearance of such an intelligent and likable young man. All who knew him described Guimond as highly responsible, the kind of person who would never willfully “disappear” or do anything foolish to cause his own demise.

Guimond, who would be 31 now, was raised in Maple Lake, the only child of Brian Guimond and Lisa Cheney. He was a stellar student in high school, president of his class, school representative on the school board and voted “Most Likely to Succeed” by his classmates.

At SJU, Guimond was studying political science. One evening, he attended a get-together with friends at Metten Court on the north end of campus. Shortly after midnight, he left the gathering to walk home, normally a three-minute walk to his dormitory room at Maur House.

The next day, worries began when it became obvious that something was wrong, that something had happened to Guimond.

Law enforcement speculated he might have stumbled into a lake on campus. After weeks of searches that involved the sheriff’s department, trained divers, a bloodhound and volunteers, no trace of Guimond was found on the campus or in its waters.

At the time he went missing, Guimond was not dressed for the weather. He had not worn a warm coat to the friends’ gathering, an indication to many he intended to take the quick walk home afterward so did not have to bundle up. He also did not wear his eyeglasses to the party. His car was found on campus.

There was no other indication he had left the campus with anyone or had any plans to go anywhere else after the gathering.

Guimond was described as 5 feet 11 inches, 160 pounds, blonde hair and blue eyes. He had a four-inch vertical scar on one of his shoulders. At the time he went missing, he was wearing blue jeans and a gray SJU sweatshirt.

His roommate, Nick Hydukovich, stunned by Guimond’s disappearance, said he was so responsible that his going somewhere else that night was unthinkable, something Guimond would absolutely not do.

Brian Guimond

After 12 years, an undertone of frustration and anger can still be heard in the voice of Brian Guimond, Joshua’s father, who still lives in Maple Lake.

From the very beginning, Guimond accused the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office and St. John’s University of either doing a weak effort at investigating or of stonewalling when questions came up as to what might have happened.

Talking via telephone from Maple Lake Nov. 18, Guimond told the Newsleader he has a theory as to what happened to his son, but he cannot prove it, saying only it was a “set-up” and that, in his opinion, it involved one or more staff members at SJU. However, Guimond declined to give specifics except for the name of someone he suspects, someone who worked on the SJU campus at that time, but he acknowledges he lacks the concrete evidence to prove his theory.

In the weeks after Joshua went missing, his father was frequently on the SJU campus, but the authorities there succeeded in getting a restraining order against him for a period of two years.

Guimond said two days after Joshua went missing, someone gained access to his computer in his dorm room and erased hundreds of emails from the machine’s hard drive. Guimond believes whoever did that knew something about his son’s abduction.

The only thing that will solve the case, Guimond told the Newsleader, is for cold-case experts to come to the Stearns County area, to ask all the right questions and to examine any and all investigative reports that have – or have not been – completed. And the only thing that can make that happen, Guimond said, is public pressure.

If anybody has any information about Guimond’s disappearance, they should call the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office at 320-251-4240 or the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Tip Line at 1-877-996-6222.
