Family of Missing Lubbock Teen Losing Faith In Investigation

Posted: 1/5/2006

The family of missing Lubbock teen Joanna Rogers says they are losing faith in the Lubbock Sheriff`s Department`s investigation of the case.

It`s been 19 months since the 16-year-old went missing. Not until recently, though, has the Rogers family become frustrated with the sheriff`s department.

Kathy Rogers, Joanna`s mother, says it all started a few weeks ago when the connection of Rosendo Rodriguez III and her daughter came out before she was contacted by the sheriff`s department.

"I was perturbed to say the least," she says. "I lost a lot of confidence in the sheriff`s office`s communication (skills)."

Rogers says the same thing happened again last week.

"When human remains were found (last week out in Yellowhouse Canyon), we heard it on the news," she says. "Then the sheriff called."

Then just this week, Rogers says she received phone calls from sheriff`s investigators asking for Joanna`s DNA evidence and hard drive from her computer. Rogers says she gave that to the sheriff`s office over a year ago.

Even though it`s been two year since Rogers and another Lubbock woman, Jennifer Wilkerson, went missing, Sheriff Gutierrez assures the two cases are constantly being worked on.

"Those girls continue to be high priority," he says. "I`ve sent that message down to the chief, the captain and investigators.

Rogers questions that, especially since the lead investigator, Sgt. Greg Parrott, has been removed from the case. Parrott, says Rogers, was "very committed" to finding Joanna.

"I don`t get that same sense of dedication from the current administration," she says. "Sometimes, having new eyes brings a new perspective, some fresh information, and that`s not a bad thing."

Rogers says she is looking into a new set of eyes.

"I won`t be above asking the FBI to become involved," she says.

There is still no confirmation on whether the remains found last week in Yellowhouse Canyon are that of a male or a female. Sheriff Gutierrez says he hasn`t heard anything from the medical examiner`s office.

Sources tell KAMC-28 that the remains are neither Rogers nor Wilkerson.

Unsolved Lubbock Murders/Disappearances Make National Headlines

Six of Lubbock's unsolved murder and missing person cases made national news Friday night. CNN's Nancy Grace devoted her hour long show to helping shed new light on the investigations. Lubbock County Sheriff David Gutierrez, who is investigating many of the cases, was interviewed for the show, NewsChannel 11's Kealey McIntire has more on his reaction.

Nancy Grace tried to paint a picture of Lubbock being a small town with six women dead or missing. Amanda Gschwend, Linda Carbajal, Cynthia Palacio, Joanna Rogers, Jennifer Wilkerson and Summer Baldwin were killed or disappeared in Lubbock County over the past six years.

Grace repeatedly asked Sheriff Gutierrez "what's going on in little ol' Lubbock, Texas." Here's what he would've said if they would've given him the time he said he needed to respond.

Six high profile missing persons or homicide cases all remain unsolved in Lubbock. CNN's Nancy Grace wants to know what's being done to solve the cases so she invited Sheriff Gutierrez onto the show to explain. She spoke with him by phone for one segment of the hour long show. Gutierrez said he wasn't given time to explain they've conducted massive manhunts and traveled to dozens of cities looking for answers on the whereabouts of Jennifer Wilkerson and Joanna Rogers.

"The men and women of this department have worked thousands of hours, day and night and have given themselves. It doesn't become just a case, we get personally involved and sometimes there's frustration because we want to find a resolution to this," said Gutierrez.

Grace asked numerous times about the connection with Rosendo Rodriguez and Joanna Rogers. Rodriguez faces capital murder charges for Summer Baldwin's death. Investigators say computers confiscated from Rodriguez and Joanna prove they communicated. On the show Sheriff Gutierrez said he couldn't talk about the case, for fear of hindering the investigation, but was met with this remark from Grace: "I understand that sheriff, I'm a former prosecutor. I'm asking you what's going on with the women in and around Lubbock, Texas."

Despite her seemingly aggressive attitude Gutierrez believes Grace devoted the show to the Lubbock cases because she wants to help. He hopes the national exposure brings forth new information.

"They're truly concerned about the welfare of these girls and they're truly concerned, the program is concerned about the families involved in this and their kids. As are we," said Gutierrez.

National exposure has helped in the past. Ten years ago the sheriff's office had a missing person's case. They found her in California after America's Most Wanted highlighted the case.

Buffalo Springs Lake remains teenage male

The human remains discovered near Buffalo Springs Lake two weeks ago are those of an unidentified teenage male, said chief investigator Robert Byers of the Lubbock County Medical Examiner's Office.
Byers said examiners had found that the deceased was probably between 12 and 19 years of age, had dark, curly hair and was between 5 foot 6 and 5 foot 9 inches tall.

"I don't know of a person of this description missing in this area," said Byers.

He said there is evidence of traumatic injury to the body.

Many people were anxious to learn more about the body, said Byers, because of speculations that it could be that of Joanna Rogers or Jennifer Wilkerson, two Lubbock teenagers missing since 2004.

"We understand everybody's anxious," he said.

The remains were found Dec. 29, when two motorists pulled over on the side of FM 835 to make a cell phone call. While one motorist made the call, the other walked away from the car and came upon a human skull. The Lubbock County Sheriff's deputies were called to the scene, where they found other remains underneath leaves, broken tree limbs and grass, about 10 to 15 yards away from the location of the skull.

Sheriff's Capt. Kevin Overstreet said the remains were primarily intact, though badly decomposed.

He also said traces of body tissue were found on the skull, and that clothing was found with the body.

Byers said more than 95 percent of the bones of the body were recovered, which was enough to complete the investigation.

Investigators said last week that it is still unclear whether the scene was used for a body dump or was the scene of a murder. Sheriff's deputies continued to maintain the crime scene in search of additional evidence as of Friday.

Information about the body will be compared to that of reported missing persons and will be sent to the National Missing Person's Database later this week in hopes of identifying the young male.

Skeletal Remains Found in Kent County

Investigators are trying to identify a new set of skeletal remains. Kent County sheriff's deputies made the discovery in the northeast portion of Kent County on Friday. A tip given last Monday led them to the site. The remains are believed to be female and are now in custody of the Lubbock County Medical Examiner's Office. Both Kent County Sheriff's Department and the Texas Rangers are investigating.

There are currently no missing persons cases in Kent County. However there are still two outstanding missing person cases in Lubbock. Both Joanna Rogers and Jennifer Wilkerson have been missing since the summer of 2004. Again, the remains have yet to be identified.

Skeletal Remains Found in Kent County

Skeletal remains were found at the bottom of a 20 foot water well next to an abandoned house in Kent County, just outside of Jayton. Kent County is 100 miles southeast of Lubbock.

Jayton is a small town of 513 people, where the city streets are quite and so are the rural dirt roads. But it was eerily quiet at a rural abandoned house and the echoes of death are between the walls of this 20 foot water well.

"We received information about skeletal remains in Kent County through another investigation," said Kent County Sheriff Billy Scogin.

That person, who Scogin will not name, told investigators last Monday the body could be found in the county. But for five days, investigators had to think about where to start in a 900 square mile county. They started in the northeast portion first.

"This area is very rural. It's mostly abandoned houses. The deputy took it upon himself and started walking through each of the houses to see what he could find," said Scogin.

Five days after the tip, they searched two abandoned homes. But it was the struck of luck they found the remains at the bottom of an obscure water well. Sheriff Scogin says they believe the body was from a small framed person and has been there for several years.

This small town of 513 people are already talking. "It has shocked everybody in this town to know a person ended up in a cistern for that long," said 71 year-resident Russell Wright.

Kent County investigators believe the remains do not belong to missing teen Joanna Rogers or Jennifer Wilkerson. The Lubbock Medical Examiner will start the identification process on Tuesday. Investigators expect to know more information this week.

Volunteers Say They're Ready To Search City Landfill

Posted: 6/8/06

A search of the Lubbock City Landfill would take a lot of time, and a lot of man power. It would also be an expensive process. Volunteer members of United Response Search and Rescue out of Dallas say they are ready to help. The group has done a lot of research into how a landfill search would work. Director and Co-Founder Dana Ames says she doesn't know if local law enforcement will for sure search the Lubbock landfill, but she says volunteers are ready.

"A landfill search is a very difficult, tedious, time consuming, expensive process. It's one that you don't enter into lightly. It is extremely dangerous for all individuals who would participate in that," said Ames. Ames says searchers would need to wear protective garments that can cost a lot of money. The search group is looking into possible fund raisers, or people who could donate that gear.

While the search centers around Joanna Rogers, Ames says their search group always looks for Jennifer Wilkerson as well. The Lubbock woman disappeared on July 13th of 2004. Ames says when ever they are on a search, or receive a tip, the group treats that information as if it could be used to find both missing girls. Ames says the Wilkerson family's hearts goes out to the Rogers family. "They have mixed emotions as well. Their hearts are absolutely broken for the Rogers. In a way they feel a sense of resolve as well for them, but then that also comes back and instills that further fear that they face every day knowing this could be the same fate for their child," said Ames.

If you have any information on either of these cases that would be helpful to police, call Crime Line at (806) 741-1000.

It's been almost a year since investigators searched the city landfill following the discovery of Summer Baldwin's body. John Cobb at the Lubbock City Landfill tells NewsChannel 11 that after Baldwin was discovered, crews decided to stop dumping in that area. Cobb says it wasn't a legal request; he says they did it because they thought they should.

Lubbock Sheriff's Office Still Searching For Leads In Wilkerson Case

Jennifer Wilkerson was last seen two years ago today (Thursday) at a friend's house in South Lubbock. Authorities tell us while they've made progress, they aren't any closer to learning Wilkerson's whereabouts.

"There's been a ton of work gone into the case, as far as eliminating potential leads and eliminating potential suspects. So, as far as that goes, we've covered a lot of ground," said Captain Don Carter with the Lubbock Sheriff's Office.

Wilkerson disappeared July 13th, 2004 at the age of 26. Authorities tell us they never rule anything out, but right now, there are no links between Wilkerson's disappearance and Summer Baldwin or Joanna Rogers.

Rosendo Rodriguez is charged with the murder of Baldwin, who's body was found in the city landfill last September. Last month, he also confessed to killing Lubbock teen Joanna Rogers who went missing May 2004. Rodriguez reportedly claimed he put Roger's body in a suitcase, like Baldwin's, and dumped it. But, Roger's body has not been found.

Rosendo Rodriguez Takes Lie Detector Test

Confessed killer Rosendo Rodriguez was strapped down on Tuedsay for a polygraph test.

The 26-year-old, who has admitted to killing 29-year-old Summer Baldwin, recently confessed to murdering 16-year-old Joanna Rogers.

Investigators were hoping to shed some light on whether Rodriguez confessed to the crime to avoid the death penalty or if he really committed the crime.

After six hours of trying to find the truth from Rodriguez, the tester and investigators emerged from the Lubbock County Sheriffs Office. They would not comment on the case.

More than a month ago, Rodriguez confessed via videotape to killing Rogers, stuffing her body in a suitcase, with her clothes in another, and dumping them in separate dumpsters.

The admission of guilt, however, still has Rogers` parents, Joe Bill and Kathy, skeptical.

"Rosendo never told me (he did it)," he says. "What I see I beleive, what I know I beleive, not because somebody tells me something."

Kathy is concerned Rosendo`s revelation was to reach a deal.

"I don`t know that life in prison is a good deal, but he might not be telling us everything that happened, but if it brings Summer and Joanna closer to justice, then yes," she says.

Justice could also be served if Joanna`s body is found. Rosendo says it`s in the landfill. The Rogers have some reservations.

"If I knew my daughter was there, I would be searching it with a teaspoon," says Joanna`s dad.

"If they would be willing to dig, what a greater gift," says Kathy.

So far, there has been no advancement into searching the landfill, and that is okay with the Rogers.

"I`m certainly not against it, but it is dangerous," says Joe Bill. "It`s like finding a needle in a haystack. If people in the community want it, I`m with the community on that."

With closure seeming to be closer, the Rogers say they`re ready.

"If he was responsible for her disappearence, then her getting justice he deserves. If he`s doing it to avoid death for life in prison, I still have the option of her being alive. So either way, I`m not losing much on the deal," says Kathy.

These new details come just a day before the two-year anniversary of the disappearance of Jennifer Wilkerson. She would be 28. Still, there are o supect and limited leads in her disappearance.

From the family:

"August 23, 2006

Someone out there has taken away two years of being able to enjoy the presence of our daughter. You know who you are and you know why Jennifer has vanished. Be very aware that we will some day have all the answers. If you have harmed Jennifer in any way, we don’t have to threaten you with justice. Someone bigger than all of us knows what you have done and is watching you! The justice you will receive will far out weigh any justice you might receive on this earth.

To all the wonderful people that have given their support, love, and prayers, we have nothing new to share with you. We are left at present to try and hold close to our hearts and minds memories we have of our daughter. Her smile, her silly little laugh, her fiery spirit, her ever lasting love for her family, and our love for her. I miss her visits, her insights, her passion for life, her adventures, and the list could go on and on!

Our prayers will be answered and some day we will be reunited with our daughter, whether in this life or beyond. I want to thank everyone for their continued love and support. You have helped me confirm in my heart, that there is far more good, than bad in this world and that in our darkest hours, we are never alone.

Love you all,
Vikki"

Wilkerson Family Speaks on Three Year Anniversary of Daughter's Disappearance

Parents of a missing Lubbock woman are sharing their story on the three year anniversary of their daughter's disappearance. Jennifer Lynn Wilkerson vanished on July 13th, 2004, three years ago Friday. She was last seen leaving a friends house that night. Since then, the Lubbock Sheriff's Department has interviewed more than 50 people, 25 of whom submitted to a polygraph test and there are still no good leads.

"All we do know is that our daughter is missing and we're very concerned," Jennifer's Father Jack Wilkerson said.

Those were the words from Mr. Wilkerson nearly three years ago. Scared and concerned over the disappearance of his daughter, Jennifer Lynn Wilkerson. Three years later, that fear and concern continues.

"One day your frustrated that nothing's happening. The next day you're depressed. The next day you're hopefully and then you're feeling guilty saying what could I be doing? have a done everything I could," Mr. Wilkerson said.

Both Jack and Vikki Wilkerson have spent the last three years searching and hoping for their daughters safe return.

"She loved everything. Music, books, learning. She just enjoys life," Mr. Wilkerson added.

But the stress they experience has caused strain in every part of their lives.

"Life goes on, but we're not getting on. We're just getting through each day and trying to figure out a way. It's effected our entire family," Mrs. Wilkerson said.

"We don't know what else to do. We've pretty much put it in the sheriff department's hands and it's up to them because we don't know what else to do," Mr. Wilkerson added.

The Lubbock Sheriff's Department has, in the past three years, continued the search for Wilkerson. They've never wavered in their determination to find her.

Major Don Carter with the Lubbock Sheriff's Office said, "As far as the sheriff's office is concerned, we have never considered this a case to put on the back burner."

And three long years later, both the sheriff's department and the Wilkerson Family know that somebody knows something.

"Imagine what it would be like missing your brother, your sister, your mother, your father, your child. Someone important to you. Imagine not knowing where they were or what would happen to them, and put yourself in our place," Mr. Wilkerson said.

Jennifer Lynn Wilkerson
Vital Statistics at Time of Disappearance

Missing Since: July 13, 2004 from Lubbock, Texas
Classification: Endangered Missing
Date Of Birth: December 9, 1977
Age: 26 years old
Height and Weight: 5'5, 110 pounds
Distinguishing Characteristics: Caucasian female. Brown hair, blue eyes. Wilkerson's lower lip is pierced. She has several tattoos: a red rose with a snake wound around the stem on her left upper arm and shoulder, a small ladybug on the right rear side of her neck, the word "Taken" on the back of her neck, the word "Rotten" and a butterfly on her back, a dragon wrapped around her right ankle, a fish on her stomach, roses on her right wrist, and an unspecified tattoo around her left leg. Wilkerson had red highlights in her hair at the time of her disappearance. Her nickname is Jen. Some agencies refer to her as Lynn Wilkerson or Lynn Jennifer Wilkerson.
Clothing/Jewelry Description: Blue capri pants, a red halter top, and black flip-flops, or jeans and a dark-colored t-shirt.

Details of Disappearance

Wilkerson was last seen at approximately 11:00 a.m. on July 13, 2004, at her boyfriend's residence near the 2400 block of 118th Street in the south side of Lubbock, Texas. He said she left his home to drive to her own home, then to work at Nothin' Butt Smokes. Wilkerson apparently made it home, but she never arrived at work and has never been heard from again.

Wilkerson's car, a black 1999 Honda Civic coupe, was found parked at her residence after her disappearance. Her house was locked and her car keys and house keys were inside. She also left behind money and all her personal posessions except her tan shoulder strap purse. She never contacted her employer to say she would be absent from work, and never picked up her last paycheck. Neither of her two roommates have heard from her.

Police stated that they were looking for a suspicious vehicle which they believe may have been involved in Wilkerson's disappearance. It is described as a small black truck set low to the ground, with unique smooth hubcaps on the tires and decals in the back window. It may be equipped with hydraulics, and may have tinted windows and out-of-state license plates. The vehicle and its driver have not been located or identified.

Wilkerson's family lives in New Mexico and she had been planning to visit them before she disappeared. She was a sophomore at South Plains College at the time of her disappearance. She was the second young woman to disappear from the Lubbock area in the same time period; sixteen-year-old Joanna Rogers vanished from Lubbock in May 2004. Her remains were found in a local landfill in October 2006. While it is unusual to have two women missing from a comparatively small town at the same time, investigators have found no evidence to suggest that Wilkerson and Rogers's cases are connected.

Authorities believe Wilkerson is missing under suspicious circumstances and may be in danger. They are investigating her disappearance as an abduction. Her case is unsolved.

Five year anniversary of Lubbock woman's disappearance

Posted: July 12, 2009 07:39 PM CDT

By Katie Bauer

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - In the last five years Jennifer Wilkerson's family has never stopped searching for her. To this day there are still no definite answers of what happened, but Jennifer's mother Vikki Wilkerson continues to hope that someday that will change.

Not a day goes by that Wilkerson doesn't wake up thinking about her daughter. "I pretty much lived as a zombie, I mean I don't even think we were just numb that it was even happening and stayed that way for several years, I'm still numb sometimes," said Wilkerson.

On Monday July 13th Jennifer Wilkerson will be missing for five years.  In 2004, the 26-year-old left her boyfriend's house in Lubbock one morning never to be seen again.

In the course of those years, the Lubbock County Sheriff's Office has followed up on hundreds of leads, but still no Jennifer. "Nobody has come forward and gave us true facts of where she is so that we can bring her home one way or another," said Wilkerson.

Wilkerson has come to the realization that she doesn't think Jennifer is still alive. "In my heart I don't, but her dad feels like she is, so that's what we hope it is," said Wilkerson.

There has never been a memorial service for Jennifer, but her mother has considered throwing a party to remember her life. "I was real excited about it and kind of in the planning stage and then I backed off because it hit me one morning that was too final and even though what I feel like in my heart, I'd be devastated to have it proven," said Wilkerson.

And as the fifth year of Jennifer's disappearance is coming and going, Wilkerson pleads for anyone to come forward with information. "Just let us know if they know anything at all so that we can put our minds and hearts to rest and find her," said Wilkerson.

Wilkerson says she thinks about her daughter every night before she goes to bed, but breaking down just isn't an option. "If she thought that any of this has destroyed us, it would break her heart, so I'm not always strong, but I keep going, I will," said Wilkerson.

The Lubbock County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate leads in this case.

If you have any information about the disappearance of Jennifer Wilkerson. Please call the Lubbock County's Sheriff's Office at 775-1601.

Wilkerson search hits five-year mark

By Logan G. Carver | AVALANCHE-JOURNAL
Monday, July 13, 2009

Five years to the day Jennifer Lynn Wilkerson disappeared, her mother still refuses to give up hope she will one day know what happened to her daughter.

"Somewhere, somebody knows something," said Vikki Wilkerson, of Hobbs, N.M. "They just need to come forward and give us some answers."

Wilkerson, 27, disappeared from her South Lubbock County home July 13, 2004, leaving behind her keys and car.

The case is still active, with investigators continuing to re-interview people and re-submit evidence, lead investigator Doug Sutton said.

"Any time we can follow up, we do," he said.

There are multiple "persons of interest" in the case, but Sutton would not go into detail about who they might be or how they might be involved.

He urged anyone with information to come forward to help investigators solve the case and help the missing woman's parents find closure.

"I know there's people out there that know exactly what happened to her," Sutton said.

Jack and Vikki Wilkerson are guardedly optimistic, too. But Jack Wilkerson said the emotional roller coaster has been tough.

He said the Texas Rangers or sheriff's office will say they have new leads and pique their hopes, but the case seems like it hasn't progressed since 2004.

"We don't know a thing now that we didn't know within the first week," Jack Wilkerson said. "Frustration is about the only consistent emotion."

So Jack and Vikki Wilkerson have taken a proactive approach.

They've made a flier reminding people about Jennifer Wilkerson's disappearance and planned to post them at Sonic Drive-in restaurants. Their daughter used to stop by there daily to order a Dr Pepper.

Vikki Wilkerson also had her daughter's name added to a government database called NamUs.

The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System combines information from two databases and contains data entered from medical examiners and coroners, such as dental records, sex, age and physical identifiers.

Wilkerson hopes the database will ensure someone will be able to locate her daughter.

"It gives us peace knowing she's not still in a (morgue) somewhere," Wilkerson said.

She remains hopeful she will again see her daughter alive. But her instincts tell her otherwise.

"If I go by my gut feeling, I have felt in my heart that I've lost her," Wilkerson said. "This is one time I hope mother's intuition is wrong."

An update from the family:

"July 13, 2009

Jennifer has been missing now for 5 long years, as of July 13, 2009.  Jack and I cling tight to each other and our hope that we will some day find our daughter.  With each passing day, that hope becomes harder and harder for me to hang on to.  I would like to ask each of you to continue to keep Jennifer in your prayers, and if you would, send her flyer and her website information to everyone on your e-mail list asking them to do the same. Together we could form a network of Jennifer’s Angels.  What better way to get her face and story out there?  Also, every single day Jennifer would go to the Sonic drive-in and order a “Super Sonic Dr. Pepper with extra ice”.  I can still hear her voice, as I have witnessed this ritual many times.  If she is still alive I guarantee she is getting her Dr. Pepper.  If each of you would print out a few flyers  and post them at your Sonic Drive-ins and possibly at any truck stops in your area, we might just be able to bring her home!

There have been a few new leads, but as in the past, they have created more questions than answers.  We still have the support of the Lubbock Sheriff’s Department. Doug Sutton is the lead Investigator and is good at keeping us informed.  When Doug got Jennifer’s case, a five-man team was put together consisting of several departments to concentrate on Jen’s case.  We appreciate that they are all still searching for answers.

Although he is no longer officially on Jen’s case, Greg Parrott will forever be involved in bringing Jennifer home.  Dana and Sheila with the United Search and Rescue also hold a special place in our hearts, and are still very involved in Jen’s case.  They are a constant source of love and support.

Kelly Jolkowski knows first hand about life in the world of the missing.  Her son Jason has been missing since June 13, 2001.  She created Project Jason to bring hope and assistance for families of the missing by providing resources and support.  She is truly amazing.

Jennifer’s information is now on NamUs – National Missing and Unidentified Persons System.  NamUs (http://www.namus.gov/) brings together two online, searchable databases: unidentified decedents database and missing persons database.  Simultaneous searching of missing persons records against cases in the unidentified decedents database to identify unidentified human remains and solve missing persons cases.

Jack and I want to thank you all for your love and support.  With Hope and Faith, some day we will be able to report that we have Jen home.

Love,
Jack and Vikki"
