Lynn Wood missing from White County since 1999

Lynn Wood has been missing from White County for 11 years. His family suspects foul play, but investigators have no evidence of a homicide. Cpl. Steve Hernandez says, "You have to suspect the worst but hope for the best."

Pictures and precious moments are all that's left of Lynn Wood.

"Lynn was a funny person," says his brother, Johnny.

They're memories that are held dear. He was a 47-year-old with a heartwarming smile always willing to help anyone.

"I love him and I miss him and I want him back," says Johnny.

Johnny Wood's grief and his pain are now spent asking and begging someone to listen.

"Please tell me where he is at. What happened? I want to know the truth. I really want to know the truth," he says.

Red River Shores is a secluded area in White County known for drug activity.

It's where Wood was last seen in 1999.

Cpl. Steve Hernandez says, "That is one more case they want off that desk."

Hernandez says a team of detectives has been actively working this case since the beginning.

Hernandez explains, "Right now, we have no evidence of anything. We have had several leads over the last several years but nothing substantial."

There is no trace and no trail only gut feelings.

Johnny says, "I do know that he was involved with drugs. Lynn thought of himself as being almost invincible at times. He thought nothing like that would ever happen to him."

Rumors flew and stories of murder.

"They all concluded in everyone of them that he was shot and that they tried to burn him up."

But deputies can't make an arrest on rumors. There's no evidence. No body.

Johnny says, "I don't know why a lawyer would protect somebody to keep from telling about someone's lost loved one in their family. That's frustrating."

For more than a decade, Johnny Wood and his friends John and Sharron Vaughn have searched for Lynn.

They've talked with people, demanded answers and nothing.

John Vaughn says, "It's just kind of chasing tail around and around. You hear one thing. Then you hear something else. And well, you need to talk to this person and that person."

It's been eleven years of waiting and wondering.

Sharron says, "We loved him. We still love him. I still have that hope. My heart tells me one thing and my head something else."

It's an instinct though that someone who knew Lynn is responsible. They're pray is that one day a rumor will turn to truth.

Johnny says, "I have been threatened but I am still going to ask questions."

It's a personal mission from Johnny Wood to his lost brother.

"He deserves to be found. He deserves a proper resting place," he says. 

A police report was filed on April 4, 1999. However, his family says he never showed up for Christmas in 1998.

Deputies say there have been numerous rumors over the years about what happened to Wood, but nothing concrete.

White County Cold case: Lynn Wood

Lynn Wood is missing and presumed dead by police.

Last seen in April 1999 in the Holly Springs area north of Searcy, Wood is 5’11” and weighs 170 pounds with blue eyes and brown hair. He was 47 when he disappeared and would be 55 now.

The case is under investigation by the Crime Scene/Cold Case unit of the White County Sheriff’s Department, headed by Lt. Fred Cheek.

“His street name or nickname was, ‘Two guns,” Cheek said of Lloyd Lynn Wood. “We consider it a missing persons case. Through investigation we have found no signs of foul play, but we do think the worst because his family has not had any contact with him whatsoever since the day of his disappearance.”

“Our main objective is to try and find where ‘Two Guns’ is,” Cheek said.

A common belief among detectives and the public is that the case is related to illegal drugs — specifically the methamphetamine culture.

“We have been told that it was drug related,” Cheek said. “We have even gone as far as speaking with a lot of the circles in the area where he ran, drug folks he was known to at least be acquaintances with.”

No solid leads have been discovered about where Wood’s body may finally be found, leaving the Wood family in agonizing limbo.

“That’s what tears me up about all these cases is that, behind the scenes of each one of these cases there is sadness, there is turmoil, there is no closure whatsoever,” Cheek said. “That weighs heavily on me. I lose sleep at night and it occupies my thoughts during the day thinking about these families. Sometimes it’s overwhelming.”

There is no evidence that threats were made against Wood before his disappearance.

“All we have is rumors,” Cheek said. “I have been told it involved him owing a certain amount of dope to someone. At this point, we don’t have anything that points to that.”

Cheek doesn’t know for sure how Wood got the nickname of “Two Guns.”

“I have been told that it was because he carried two guns on him,” Cheek said.

Lynn’s younger brother, Johnny Wood, is very interested in the case being solved.

“I remember him being gone, off and on, for long periods of time,” Wood said. “Then that night I heard that he had been killed over around the Bald Knob area somewhere, that there was some druggies that were having a party and he was involved, and they killed him and tried to burn his body and get rid of it and dispose of it. We haven’t heard anything since.”

Like the detectives, the family has heard rumors.

“We’ve had people tell us they heard this really did happen, but they never could get anybody to tell the police that. Whoever did it would never confess,” Wood said.

An exact location of the murder and where the body was burned is not known.

“We don’t have any idea where it happened for sure,” Wood said. “We’ve heard several different rumors but none turned out to be anything the police could go by. There was no really knowing without someone coming forward that was there and saw it happen. None of them will come forward and admit it or talk about it.”

Intimidation is being used to keep witnesses from talking, Wood believes.

“The reason they don’t is that the ones that have mentioned it to me were afraid for their lives,” Wood said. “If they spoke to the police, they would kill them, too.”

Wood remembers his brother fondly.

“He was a good person until he got involved in drugs,” Wood said. “He had a good heart. He was a funny person. He always like to be funny. He liked to joke. I remember that most of all about him. He always liked to play with the little kids and aggravate them, but they all loved him.”

Wood agrees that the toll on the family has been painful.

“It’s been real hard on my parents,” Wood said. “My mother, since 1999, has gone downhill worse than any of us. It’s really affected her real bad.”

For these reasons, Wood needs someone to call in a tip, even if it is anonymous.

“I urge people to come forward,” Wood said. “I would like to know what happened to my brother, and so I could find the remains and give him a proper burial.”
