Detectives exhaust two leads in recent search for Kayla Croft-Payne

Detectives exhaust two leads in recent search for Kayla Croft-Payne
Kayla Croft-Payne, 21, former of Chehalis, has been missing since April of 2010 and authorities are low on leads.
Investigators eliminated two leads and picked up a third last week in the search for Kayla Croft-Payne, a young Lewis County woman who went missing in late April of 2010.
Acting on tips from family members and local residents, detectives with the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office have determined her disappearance was not related to the web site Model Mayhem, nor a property in Winlock referred to locally as “The Farm.”
Detectives had begun their investigation into Model Mayhem after a family member told them she found Croft-Payne’s profile on the site and said Croft-Payne may have been on her way to a related photo shoot when she disappeared. A warrant was obtained March 13 allowing investigators to access the profile information maintained by Internet Brands, Incorporated, owners of Model Mayhem. The company worked with investigators as they analyzed the names and pictures of all profiles originating from Western Washington, but did not find anything related to the missing woman.
While following up with Croft-Payne’s relatives regarding the results of their search, investigators were shown the internet profile in question by the relative who had discovered it and found it was an entirely different modeling website. They are now looking into this new lead, but were also able to rule out another possibility through an investigation in the Winlock area earlier this week.
A report said deputies had received “several tips” indicating Croft-Payne had been murdered and buried, possibly down a well, at a property on the 1500 block of Ferrier Rd., south of Winlock, which they stated was commonly referred to as “The Farm.” Spending a total of 16 hours on Wednesday and Thursday, detectives dug through “mounds and piles of garbage,” as well as draining a 35-foot well and excavating a separate 20-foot well, but were able to find “nothing of interest” to the case.
“This case has been troubling for our office and we still hope to find Kayla and bring closure to her family and friends,” stated Lewis County Sheriff Steve Mansfield. “The search was long and exhaustive. The detectives worked very hard and were extremely diligent and thorough in the process of searching this property.”
Reported missing May 5, 2010, Croft-Payne is a 21-year-old, 5’6”, 105 lbs white female with blue eyes and brown hair. Those with information are encouraged to contact the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office at (360) 740-1266 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-748-6422. Searchers dig through Oregon woods for teen who vanished 5 years ago
November 18, 2015 5:31 pm • Andre Stepankowsky
Lewis and Cowlitz county investigators recently used cadaver dogs and heavy equipment to search the woods in Northwest Oregon for a teenager who vanished five years ago and who is believed to have died from a drug overdose.
Searchers failed to find the remains of Kayla Croft-Payne, an 18-year-old Chehalis-area woman who disappeared in May 2010. But recent information has detectives more optimistic they can solve the case.
“We got a tip from an individual about a month ago about where her body may be buried. We think it is credible. We looked and did not find anything, but it is enough for us to go public and try to reach people who have not talked to us about the case,” said Charlie Rosenzweig, chief criminal deputy for Cowlitz County.
The case has been shifted from Lewis County to Cowlitz County jurisdiction because Croft-Payne, based on new information, is now believed to have died in north Cowlitz County, Rosenzweig said.
Investigators believe Croft-Payne died from an accidental drug overdose and that someone disposed of her body illegally.
“They were scared and did not know what to do. They didn’t want authorities to be notified. That’s the information we’re being provided, and based on several different sources that are consistent we believe that is a credible version of what took place,” Rosenzweig said.
He declined to specify the search location, but he said it took place three to four weeks weeks ago in a highly wooded area and included search and rescue personnel, cadaver dogs and earth-moving equipment. Rosenzweig declined to say how detectives kept the operation, which was spread over several days, shaded from public view and curiosity.
He said authorities are going public to spur public interest and shake out new clues and tips. Anyone with information should call Detective Brad Thurman at 360-577-3092 or make an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers of Cowlitz County.
“We would love to find her and get her back to her family if we could,” Rosenzweig said.
