Family Searches For Missing Mother and Daughter

Bonnie Woodward Has Been Missing Since Friday, Her Daughter Heather Has Been Missing For Three Weeks

John Auble KPLR11.com  7:10 PM CDT, June 28, 2010

ALTON, IL (KPLR) - The search is on for a mother and her teenage daughter in Alton, Illinois, and the family would like to know if the two cases are related. "I gave her a kiss here at the carport and she said she'd see me when she got off work", Gary Wilmurth, the missing woman's boyfriend, said. Family members gathered at the home of Bonnie Woodward in East Alton, trying to put the pieces to the puzzle together, even if they don't fit.

Woodward lives with Wilmurth and he knows Bonnie did get off her job around 3:00 p.m. Friday afternoon at the Eunice Smith Nursing Home in Alton, where she has worked for 27 years.

Woodward didn't follow routine; somebody picked her up as opposed to her leaving in her truck.

"I think she had to know the guy to get in the car with him," said Woodward's daughter, Jennifer Nunez. "She had to be close with him to get in the car with him."

An Internet tipster reported seeing Woodward in a silver or gray Chevy Malibu heading into Rock Spring Park across the street from the nursing home.

Wilmurth has organized searches in the heavily wooded area. One thing is for certain, Woodward was very upset searching for her daughter, Heather, 17.

Heather was last seen at the home of a female East Alton-Wood River High School teacher where she had been living.

"She [Woodward] was at the point where her blood pressure was up," Wilmurth said.

Nunez says the teacher is not talking about Heather's disappearance. "We've been unable to contact her," Nunez said.

Family and friends now find themselves in the terrible situation of looking for both a mother and her daughter.

"I'm not giving up hope. If somebody took her, I'm hoping they'll bring her back," Wilmurth said.

Alton Police say they have no evidence that the two cases are connected.

by Erica Byfield  KMOV.com Posted on June 28, 2010 at 10:02 PM  Updated yesterday at 10:19 PM

(KMOV) -- As of Monday night, police in Alton are still looking for 48-year-old Bonnie Woodward. She was last seen on Friday afternoon in a parking lot near her job with an unidentifed man.

Woodward's family says nothing about her disappearance adds up. Her boyfriend says she would never get in a car with someone she doesn't know, and would not go this long without contacting someone.

Woodward has four children; two boys and two girls. One of her sons has special needs, and family members say she would never go more than two hours without calling to check on him.

She was last seen in yellow scrubs.  If you have any information, contact the Alton police.

Police also seek missing woman's daughter

June 30, 2010 5:37 AM By CYNTHIA M. ELLIS The Telegraph

Police need help in finding a missing 17-year-old East Alton girl whose mother vanished last week in Alton after getting off work.

Police are asking for the public's help in locating Heather Woodward of East Alton. The teen is the stepdaughter of Bonnie Woodward, who last was seen Friday in the parking lot at her place of employment near Upper Alton.

As the Alton Police Department continued its search for Bonnie Woodward, East Alton police were working hard to find the daughter.

"We need to find her and talk to her," Police Chief Dwynn Isringhausen said.

Isringhausen said although he doesn't believe the two cases are related, he would feel better knowing the teenager's location.

"First, we need to know that she's safe, and second, there are questions we need to ask her about what she may or may not know about her mother's disappearance," Isringhausen said.

Isringhausen said that Bonnie Woodward reported Heather Woodward as a runaway to police on June 17. He said that Bonnie Woodward told police that her daughter had left home and was staying at the home of a female teacher.

"She wanted her daughter to come home, and (Heather) didn't want to," Isringhausen said.

He said that police questioned the teacher and even searched her home. He said the girl no longer is staying with the teacher, who told police she didn't know Heather's whereabouts.

"She is doing everything she can to help us find Heather," Isringhausen said.

Authorities said that the teen's father died nearly 10 years ago, and Bonnie Woodward adopted the girl following his death. Heather is 5 feet 5 inches tall with a thin build, brown hair and brown eyes.

Heather recently graduated from East Alton-Wood River High School and is planning to attend college in the fall.

Anyone with information about Heather's whereabouts is asked to contact East Alton police at (618) 259-6212.

Also Tuesday, Alton police continued looking into the disappearance of Bonnie Woodward, 48, who last was seen talking to a man driving a silver/gray Chevrolet Malibu in the parking lot of Eunice Smith Nursing Home, 1251 College Ave.

Bonnie Woodward is 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighs 240 pounds with blonde hair and green eyes. She last was seen wearing yellow scrubs pants and a yellow and white scrub top.

Lt. Scott Golike, chief of detectives for the Alton Police Department, said that witnesses reported seeing Woodward talking to a white man in his mid-40s who had brown hair with gray along his temples.

Woodward has worked as a certified nursing assistant at the nursing home for the past 27 years. She lives with her boyfriend, Gary Wilmurth, in East Alton.

Golike said Woodward has not used her cell phone, credit cards or any other electronic devices since vanishing.

Family members told a Telegraph reporter on Tuesday that Heather Woodward was safe, but they wouldn't say where she was located. Relatives also said that police seized computer equipment from Bonnie Woodward's East Alton home.

Friends and relatives searched Rock Spring Park again on Tuesday in hopes of finding Bonnie Woodward. Alton police also searched the area with a K9 unit.

Anyone with information about Bonnie Woodward's whereabouts is asked to call the Alton Police Department at (618) 463-3505 ext. 250.

Family of missing Alton woman hopes for the best, fears the worst

15 hrs ago By: Casey Nolen

KSDK -- The family of a missing Alton woman is now in its fourth day of searching.

Tuesday, volunteer search and rescue crews joined the effort, as the family hopes for the best while fearing the worst.

48-year-old Bonnie Woodward was last seen leaving work on Friday afternoon on College Avenue in Alton.

With a son that requires near constant care, her family describes Woodward and someone who's in constant contact.

"She calls every two hours to check on him and make sure everything is going good," says her brother Roscoe Gray.

Tuesday the three volunteer rescue crews searched Rock Springs Park in Alton.

Search crews focused on the park because it is just across the street from the last place Bonnie was seen and the only place she's worked for more than twenty years.

Witnesses say they last saw Woodward leaving her shift at the Eunice C. Smith Nursing Home Friday afternoon, when a man in a silver or gray Chevy Malibu approached her vehicle.
Woodward's truck was left in the lot and no one has seen her since.

"She isn't going to get in the car with somebody if it's not by force," says Woodward's sister Bobbie Valdes.

Tuesday's search came up empty.
Woodward's family says it hopes for the best, but can't help worry about the worst.

"I'm hopeful, but I think we'll find something else," says Valdes. "I think it's foul play."

"If somebody out there does have Bonnie I wish you'd please let her go," says her boyfriend of several years Gary Wilmurth. "Let her get to a phone and call me. I'll come and get her."

The man witnesses say they last saw Woodward talking to was thought to be driving a 2005 to 2010 gray or silver Chevy Malibu.

Anyone with information as to Woodward's whereabouts is asked to call the Alton police at:
(618)463-3505 ext. 250.

Police locate missing teen
Mother's whereabouts still unknown

July 03, 2010 6:25 PM
By DENNIS GRUBAUGH and DANETTE WATT
The Telegraph

EAST ALTON - A teenager sought for questioning after the disappearance of her stepmother was located Saturday, but police are no closer to locating the mother herself.

Heather Woodward turned herself in at the East Alton Public Library on Saturday, ending at least one phase of a mystery that has occupied police since the June 25 disappearance of her stepmother, Bonnie Woodward, 48, of East Alton.

Police had considered Heather a runaway - not a suspect - and after talking to her Saturday believe that her own disappearance was a coincidence. Heather had been reported missing by Bonnie Woodward on June 17.

"It's more coincidental than anything," Alton Police Lt. Scott Golike said. "More typical of a runaway, unhappy at home type thing."

Bonnie Woodward's disappearance, however, is considered suspicious. She was last seen talking to a man outside the Eunice Smith Nursing Home in Alton where she worked. Since that time there has been no clue to her whereabouts including no record of use of her cellphone, credit cards or financial records.

"We are still looking for this gray four-door Malibu and the white male," Golike said. "That's what we really need."

Golike acknowledged that some investigators wondered if Bonnie Woodward was purposely staying undercover in an attempt to get her daughter to come home. That theory now does not appear to have merit.

Heather Woodward turned 18 on Saturday, he said.

At one point the teen had been staying with a female teacher, whose home was subsequently searched. By that time Heather had disappeared again, until Saturday, police said.

Authorities said that the teen's father died nearly 10 years ago, and Bonnie Woodward adopted the girl following his death.

Jordan Rodgers was working the library's front desk when Heather walked in around 10 Saturday morning and asked her to call the police.

"I realized she was the girl who's been missing for some time. She said, 'You might have heard of me, I was in the paper," Rodgers said.

Library director Richard Chartrand said he recognized her immediately and asked a staff member to "go into mother mode and sit with her. (Heather) has been coming here since she was a kid and I think she knew it was a safe place."

Police responded quickly, said Maury Reynolds, who sat with Heather as she waited for officers to arrive. "They were there just a minute later and were very protective of her."

According to the library staff, Heather Woodward had several pieces of luggage with her, including one that Reynolds described as a "carpetbag." As Heather waited for police, she clutched a teddy bear.

"We didn't want to press her because she was very upset and had tears in her eyes. She said, 'Today is my birthday.' I guess maybe she wanted to be home," Reynolds said. "I told her I had been praying for her and will continue to pray for her mother."

Bonnie Woodward is 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighs 240 pounds with blonde hair and green eyes. She last was seen wearing yellow scrubs pants and a yellow and white scrub top.

Golike said witnesses reported seeing Woodward talking to a white man in his mid-40s who had brown hair with gray along his temples.

Alton Police Chief David Hayes said detectives have worked continuously on the Woodward case almost from the beginning.

"There is no evidence to indicate foul play, but the more time that goes by the more concerned we are," he said.

Anyone with information about Bonnie Woodward's whereabouts is asked to call the Alton Police Department at (618) 463-3505 ext. 250. A reward of $5,000 has been offered for information that leads police to the missing woman.

Where is Bonnie Woodward?
Three weeks after disappearance, family still seeks missing woman

July 15, 2010 9:41 PM
By DENNIS GRUBAUGH
The Telegraph

ALTON - Three weeks ago today, Bonnie Woodward walked off her job and into thin air.

The case has agonized her extended family and baffled police. Everyone wants to know: How could the mother of a 16-year-old special needs son, a woman who stayed in close touch with most of her eight brothers and sisters, simply have disappeared?

"She vanished," said her sister, Bobbie Valdes. "It's like she never existed - and I know she existed."

In the days since the disappearance of the 48-year-old East Alton woman, police have pursued numerous leads, and the family has spread the message of their plight on media around the country. But with each passing day, hopes grow dim. There has not been any record of cell phone use, bank access or other sign.

"We all want her back," Valdes said. "We just want proof."

What police really want is the identity of a man last seen talking to Woodward on the parking lot of Eunice Smith Care Home, where Woodward, a certified nursing assistant, had just gotten off her shift, about 3 p.m. June 25.

Police have said they are looking for a white male about 40 years old with brown hair, possibly graying around the temples. He was driving what is believed to be a silver or light gray Chevrolet Malibu.

Family members said Woodward came out of the care home, wearing a yellow and white scrub top and yellow scrub pants, and went to her red Chevrolet pickup truck, where she got in and rolled down windows to cool it off on the 90-plus-degree day. The man, a smoker who was believed to have been in the parking lot for at least 30 minutes, is believed to have approached her and launched into an "intense conversation," according to at least one witness, Valdes said.

Another sister, Linda Dean of Mount Olive, believes that her sister may have been abducted against her will or was told something to convince her to get into another vehicle.

Woodward's truck remained behind on the Eunice Smith lot, windows down and unlocked. The vehicle now is in Alton police custody and being tested for evidence.

"I know my sister. She would have put up a fight," Dean said, adding she does not believe her sister is alive.

At the time of the disappearance, Woodward's then-17-year-old daughter, Heather, also was missing, having left home voluntarily some eight days before. Heather since has returned, but family members wonder whether Woodward may have been lured from the parking lot by some concern over her daughter.

Police have interviewed the daughter, now 18. She apparently had been staying with a friend. There are no known connections to the events.

Bonnie Woodward was the seventh of nine children (seven girls and two boys), five of whom still live in Southwestern Illinois. They were raised mainly in the Wood River and Roxana areas.

Woodward was married three times, divorced twice and had two children by her first husband. Her third husband, John Douglas, had two children who she adopted after his death about 10 years ago. One of those children was Heather; the other was son Aaron, who suffered severe brain trauma years ago when he was struck by a vehicle near their home.

She had five grandchildren and a sixth on the way and was helping raise them, her sister Linda said.

"That's the way she was," Dean said about her sister's big heart. "She would give you the shirt off her back."

Woodward's oldest son, Joe, who is in the military, is in the midst of getting power of attorney, so that the family can have access to her accounts, which have been frozen, Valdes said.

Dean is organizing a benefit that will be held starting at 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 8, at Hurley's Saloon, a family restaurant in Mount Olive. The daylong event, which will feature music, food and prizes, will raise money to meet family expenses. The proceeds also may be applied to the $5,000 reward that the family is offering to find Woodward, who is white, 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighs 240 pounds, with blonde hair and green eyes.

Interest is such that even a Facebook page has been launched, under "Please Help Find Bonnie Woodward."

Police said this week they are continuing their investigation but have no new details to release.

Anyone with information about Woodward's whereabouts is asked to call the Alton Police Department at (618) 463-3505 ext. 250.

Three charged in girl's disappearance, stepmother still missing

BY TERRY HILLIG
Posted: Monday, July 26, 2010 5:37

ALTON - Police continue to investigate the disappearance of Bonnie Woodward, missing since June 25, but three people now face criminal charges in connection with the earlier disappearance of her stepdaughter.

Heather Woodward was 17 when Bonnie Woodward reported her missing in June but Heather, having turned 18, walked into the East Alton Public Library July 3 and said police were looking for her. She apparently had left home voluntarily and was unharmed.

Bonnie Woodward, 48, of East Alton was last seen by co-workers talking to a man on the parking lot of Eunice Smith Nursing Home on College Avenue in Alton, where she had worked for many years.

Madison County prosecutors on Friday charged 41-year-old Christine M. Scheffel of East Alton with obstructing justice. Scheffel allegedly lied to a police officer on June 28 about Heather's whereabouts. The charge is a Class 4 felony.

Prosecutors also charged Roger W. Carroll, 44, and Monica Carroll, 44, with harboring a runaway -- Heather Woodward -- at their home in rural Jersey County from june 17 through July 3. Harboring a runaway is a misdemeanor.

Alton police Sgt. Jerry Cooley said Scheffel is a teacher at East Alton-Wood River High School and the Carrolls are friends of Scheffel.

Cooley said not knowing the girl's whereabouts -- or that she was safe -- necessitated needless work for Alton and East Alton police and other law enforcement agencies involved in investigating the two disappearances.

"We put a lot of man-hours into looking for Heather," Cooley said. He said police had to treat both cases as potentially involving foul play and possibly linked. If Heather was safe, he said, police needed to know if she had any information that would help police determine what happened to Bonnie Woodward.

As it turned out, Heather has not shed any light on her stepmother's disappearance and police have not established any link between the two cases, Cooley said.

Police said Bonnie Woodward's car was left behind on the parking lot with its windows down and her cell phone and credit cards have not been used.

Anyone with information about Bonnie Woodward is urged to call police at 618-463-3505, ext. 250.

Family Hopes Body Found In River Is Not Missing Loved One
By Shirley Washington FOX2now.com
5:28 PM CDT, August 16, 2010

EAST ALTON, ILLINOIS (KTVI-FOX2now.com) - The family of a missing East Alton woman is hoping and praying a body pulled from the Mississippi river Sunday is not that of their loved one. Bonnie Woodward disappeared in Alton June 25th at about 3:00 in the afternoon after getting off work. Her family members haven't seen or heard from her since. Every time a body is discovered in the Metro area they hold their breath, wondering whether it's their loved one.

Bobbie Valdes collapsed when she learned a badly decomposed body had been pulled from the Mississippi river Sunday. Valdes called Alton Police trying to find out whether the remains were that of her missing sister, 48-year-old Woodward.

"She's been gone seven weeks, 51 days and we have not one solid answer, not one solid thing. Nothing, nothing and it makes me mad."

Wood-Ward disappeared June 25th. She was last seen talking with a man driving a silver or gray Chevy Malibu in the parking lot of Eunice Smith Care Home where she worked.

"Somebody took her and I can't figure out why. She's a good person," says Valdes. "She'd give you the coat off her back if she thought you were cold. That's the way Bonnie is. There's nothing she wouldn't do for somebody and for them to do this to her I just don't understand it.

Valdes says she gave police and the medical examiner information that could determine whether the body is that of her younger sister.

"I gave them the surgeries my sister had. I gave them some clues about what my sister been through

Of course, everyone who knows and loves Woodward is hoping it's not.

"I want to know if she's alive, where is she at. She's my sister. We talked everyday. She was my confidant. We were close and I don't have her now. She's gone."

The body pulled from the Mississippi River Sunday was so badly decomposed that investigators couldn't tell whether it was a man or woman. Nor could they tell whether foul play was involved. Meantime, the St. Louis Medical Examiner says the process of trying to identify the body is underway but it could be weeks before they know anything.

Land owner charged in connection to search for missing Alton woman

Posted on September 29, 2010 at 11:39 AM

(KMOV) -- A search is underway right now near Brighton, Illinois for a missing woman.

According to family members, investigators are searching for Bonnie Woodward at some property on Crystal Lake Road in Jersey County.

Chief David Hayes says the owner of the property, Roger Carol, is charged with one count of interfering with the investigation into Bonnie's disappearance. There are at least 70 members of law enforcement from more than a dozen departments. They are searching 48-50 acres of land for any sign of Woodwards remains.

It's been three months since 46-year-old Bonnie Woodward went missing.

She lived in Alton, Illinois.

Woodward was last seen in the parking lot of the nursing home where she worked on June 25, 2010. She was reportedly last seen talking to a man with brown hair.

Police search in Jersey County for missing East Alton woman

BY TERRY HILLIG | Posted: Wednesday, September 29, 2010 3:30 pm

(Editor's Note: This story was updated to include additional information.)

BRIGHTON - Several dozen police officers searched a rural property northwest of Brighton on Wednesday for a 48-year-old East Alton woman missing since June 25.

Bonnie Woodward was last seen on the parking lot of Eunice Smith Nursing Home in Alton, where she had worked for many years.

Alton Police Chief David Hayes said police had physical evidence that enabled them to get a warrant to search the rural property in Jersey County.

The property is owned by Roger and Monica Carroll, charged by Madison County prosecutors in July for harboring a runaway—Bonnie Woodward’s stepdaughter, Heather Woodward. Heather dropped out of sight about a week before her stepmother, and prosecutors alleged she was staying at the Carroll home part of the time before she walked into the East Alton public library on July 3 and identified herself.

Heather was 17 when she disappeared, but has since turned 18.

Christine Scheffel, a teacher at East Alton-Wood River High School, was charged with obstructing justice in Heather’s disappearance.

Hayes said on Wednesday that Roger Carroll had been re-arrested on a new charged of obstructing justice.

Two of Bonnie Woodward’s siblings were at the search site on Wednesday.

"I just hope she’s there or something," said Woodward’s sister, 53-year-old Bobbie Valdes, of Godfrey.

"I think Heather made people think my sister was abusive," Valdes said.

"All we want is to find my sister and get some closure," Woodward’s brother, 50-year-old Roscoe Gray, of Staunton.

"All we’ve got is hope," he said.

Kari Weaver, a neighbor of the Carrolls, said her family never knew Heather was staying with the Carrolls. She said they seemed like nice people.

Weaver said she thought Heather dated the Carroll’s son, Nathan.

Fingerprints revive case of missing woman

BY TERRY HILLIG  | Posted: Friday, October 1, 2010 12:25 am

EDWARDSVILLE • Fingerprints found on the pickup of missing East Alton resident Bonnie Woodward belonged to Roger Carroll of rural Jersey County, according to a court document made public on Thursday.

Meanwhile, police searched Carroll's home and property for a second day. Authorities said they were looking for evidence that might be related to Woodward's disappearance. But searchers found no human remains — and no other evidence they were willing to talk about.

Authorities are seeking clues in the June 25 disappearance of Woodward, 48, who was last seen talking to a man on the parking lot of a nursing home in Alton where she had worked for many years. Her Chevrolet Avalanche pickup was left on the lot with its windows down.

Alton Police Chief David Hayes said Thursday's search moved to the Carrolls' residence on Creek Road southeast of Jerseyville. On Wednesday, officers aided by cadaver dogs searched 40 to 50 acres owned by Carroll and his wife, Monica.

Both Carrolls were earlier charged with harboring a runaway, Bonnie Woodward's stepdaughter Heather Woodward, who dropped out of sight a week before Bonnie Woodward disappeared. Heather was 17 when she disappeared but turned 18 before she walked into the East Alton Public Library on July 3 and identified herself.

Roger Carroll, 45, was arrested Wednesday on a new charge of obstructing justice. He was released on bond Thursday morning, according to court records.

According to the charge, Carroll gave false information to an Alton detective on July 5 when he claimed to have no knowledge of the circumstances of Bonnie Woodward's disappearance.

The warrant that authorized the search of the Carrolls' property was not open to public inspection on Thursday, but a warrant for Roger Carroll's cellular telephone records was made available.

In an affidavit accompanying an application for the warrant, Alton police detective Jarrett Ford said the Illinois State Police crime lab had determined last week that latent fingerprints on Woodward's truck belonged to Roger Carroll.

The affidavit also said Carroll resembles the description of a man with whom Woodward's co-workers saw her talking on the parking lot near a silver car believed to be a Chevrolet Malibu. The affidavit said the Carrolls own and drive a silver Malibu.

Police search in Jersey Co. for missing woman

12:13 p.m. CDT, September 30, 2010

BRIGHTON, Ill. — Authorities using cadaver dogs searched property in southwestern Illinois' Jersey County for possible remains of a woman missing since June.

Dozens of police officers converged Wednesday on some 50 acres of rural, wooded terrain near Brighton looking for signs of 48-year-old Bonnie Woodward of East Alton.

Woodward has last seen June 25 talking to a man outside an Alton nursing home where she worked.

Alton Police Chief David Hayes says police had physical evidence that enabled them to get a warrant to search the property of a man accused of helping in the voluntary disappearance of Woodward's teenage stepdaughter.

The teen resurfaced on her 18th birthday on July 3, roughly a week after her stepmother went missing.

UPDATE: Search ends; probe turns to evidence, including fingerprints
Man charged in Woodward case out on bail

September 30, 2010 10:00 PM By CYNTHIA M. ELLIS The Telegraph

Police have ended their search in Jersey County for clues in the case of a missing East Alton woman and say their probe now will rely on evidence, which include fingerprints of a central figure found on the victim's vehicle.

Investigators were saying little as to whether any evidence had been found at the home of Roger W. Carroll Jr., 44, in the 20700 block of Creek Road. Carroll was arrested Wednesday on obstruction of justice charges and taken to the Madison County Jail in Edwardsville.

Carroll posted $2,000 bond Thursday and was released.

In a late-night call to The Telegraph, Lt. Scott Golike said police had wrapped up their search and turned the property back over to the Carrolls.

Golike said any new developments may be days or weeks away while the department awaits the results of forensics investigations, including lab results.

Authorities from multiple jurisdictions searched the Carroll property Thursday. Trained cadaver dogs, some as from as far away as Wisconsin, were brought to the scene to aid in the search for Bonnie L. Woodward, who last was seen June 25 as she left her job at Eunice C. Smith Nursing Home in Alton.

Much of the search was conducted along a section of Piasa Creek, which runs through and near the property. Virtually all of the activity was out of the view of the media, which was barred from entering the road and camped out near its intersection with Crystal Lake Road.

Law enforcement converged on Carroll's property early Wednesday. Alton Police Chief David Hayes said that a warrant was issued because of Carroll's "deceitfulness" in denying any association with Woodward.

Hayes said that police had scientific evidence connecting Carroll and Woodward; however, he declined to elaborate.

An affidavit obtained by The Telegraph stated that the Illinois State Police Crime Lab analyzed fingerprints that were lifted from Woodward's vehicle, found on the lot at the nursing home, and identified them as belonging to Carroll.

Court records released Thursday show that Alton police also obtained a court order last week to get a DNA sample of Woodward.

The sample was obtained from the Alton Memorial Hospital Department of Pathology, dated May 24, 2007, and was released to evidence officer Detective Mike Metzler. The order was signed by Associate Judge Kyle Napp. The sample involved "tissue blocks and/or slides."

Hayes said the move was done in case the sample needs to be compared to any future evidence for purposes of the investigation and prosecution.

The Telegraph obtained a copy of the search warrant issued for Carroll's cellular/wireless telephone records. The warrant states that police were looking for telecommunication records pertaining to specific cellular numbers and information regarding numbers dialed, incoming calls, call durations and other technical material regarding cellular usage, including cell-site tower locations where calls were made. The warrant also sought voice mail and text message information.

Carroll was charged in July with harboring a runaway for allegedly keeping Woodward's then 17-year-old daughter, Heather, after she fled home for several days before her mother turned up missing.

Heather resurfaced on July 3, her 18th birthday, and eight days after Bonnie Woodward last was seen.

The affidavit also lists information that Carroll's vehicle matched the description of the man last seen talking with Woodward the day she disappeared. The document states that James Brand, who is Carroll's brother-in-law, called Alton police and notified them that Heather had been harbored by his brother-in-law and sister. Brand also told police that Roger Carroll drove a vehicle similar to that driven by the man seen with Woodward shortly before her disappearance.

Brand reported that Carroll had returned from vacation the same day Woodward went missing.

The document states that police contacted Carroll and his wife, Monica, and learned that they owned a vehicle - a silver Chevrolet Malibu - similar to the one described by witnesses as being driven by the man seen talking to Woodward outside the nursing home.

Authorities also confirmed that a neighbor heard a gunshot at Carroll's property around the time that Woodward went missing and reported it to the Jersey County Sheriff's Department.

Police ended their search Thursday afternoon at the Carroll property. They did not state whether any evidence had been collected.

New leads in case of missing Alton woman

Brian Kelly 10/6/2010 7:01 am

ALTON, Ill. (KMOX)  -  There’s word from Alton Wednesday morning that police are following a new lead in the Bonnie Woodward case.

Police chief David Hayes isn’t ready to release too much publically just yet.

“I don’t know if it has any promise to it or not,” Hayes tells KMOX News, ”but we are looking at another issue that is not related to the site up in Jersey County that we were at last Wednesday.”

Hayes does say last week’s search did produce forensic evidence that can be compared with the missing woman’s.

“There’s angles were looking at both in terms of forensic science and biological science, and all of that takes a lot of time,” he says.

Woodward has been missing since late June, when she was last seen talking with a man outside the nursing home where she worked.

Man indicted in East Alton woman's disappearance

Staff report
www.STLtoday.com
Posted: Thursday, October 21, 2010 5:56 pm

EDWARDSVILLE - A Jersey County man was indicted by a Madison County grand jury on Thursday in connection with the June 25 disappearance of Bonnie Woodward of East Alton.

The single-count indictment accuses Roger Carroll of rural Jerseyville of obstructing justice by telling an Alton detective on July 5 that he had no knowledge of or involvement in Woodward's disappearance. Police said Carroll's fingerprints were found on the missing woman's pickup.

The charge contained in the indictment was not new; it superceded an identical charge filed by prosecutors on Sept. 28.

Woodward, 48, was last seen talking with a man on the parking lot of the nursing home in Alton where she worked. Her truck, with its windows down, was left on the parking lot.

Carroll and his wife Monica have also been charged with harboring a runaway -- Woodward's stepdaughter, Heather Woodward, who disappeared about a week before her mother. Heather was 17 when reported missing but resurfaced on July 3 after she turned 18.

Dozens of police officers searched the Carrolls' house and land for evidence on Sept. 29 and 30.

Police: Body parts found behind East Alton strip mall
11/04/2010

East Alton, IL (KSDK) -- The Major Case Squad has been activated to investigate body parts that were found behind an East Alton, Illinois strip mall.

The scene is located in a field and wooded area in the 600 block of West St. Louis Avenue.

Investigators said construction workers were removing brush to look for a gas line when they found the body parts around 7:45 a.m. and contacted authorities.

East Alton's police chief said the body parts were all found within a close proximity of each other and appear to have been there for days, not weeks.

Police have not said who they think the person may be, but said they do not believe it is Bonnie Woodward, an East Alton woman who has been missing since July.

Illinois State Police are also assisting with the investigation.

Police not sure East Alton body parts indicate a crime

November 4, 2010

EAST ALTON • Police could not say late Thursday whether body parts discovered in a wooded area in East Alton earlier in the day were from one of two missing women from the community — or from a woman at all.

In fact, Capt. Brad Wells of the Major Case Squad said detectives cannot even be certain the pieces are all part of the same body.

Officials have not ruled out that the remains may be someone run over by a train on nearby tracks and were not yet ready to declare the strange circumstances a crime.

Workers clearing trees, stumps and logs on land behind a shopping center at Route 3 and West St. Louis Avenue made the grisly discovery and called police about 7:45 a.m., East Alton Police Chief Dwynn Isringhausen said.

The land belongs to the Olin Corp.

Isringhausen said it appeared that the remains had been on the property for only a few days.

Police were using cadaver dogs to sniff for more pieces. They planned to resume searching an area of four or five acres this morning.

Two women who live in East Alton have been reported missing under different circumstances over the past several months.

One is Crystal M. Terpening, 26, who was last seen leaving her home in the 700 block of East Rosedale Drive, about three miles from the body scene, on the evening of Oct. 12. Her mother, Deborah Schooler, said she didn't know if the body is that of her daughter. "I'm praying that she isn't."

Schooler said Terpening has disappeared before, for a day or two at a time, but on those occasions stayed with her father in Alton. Schooler said the father has not seen her either and shares in the family's concern for her well-being.

The other missing woman is Bonnie Woodward, 48, who lives in East Alton and was last seen talking to a man June 25 in the parking lot of a nursing home in Alton, where she worked. Her pickup remained on the lot. A couple in Jersey County have since been charged with harboring Woodward's runaway minor stepdaughter, and one of them was charged with obstructing Woodward's missing-person investigation. Police have searched their property.

Wells, chief of detectives for the Madison County Sheriff's Department, said the remains have been taken to the Illinois State Police crime lab in Fairview Heights for further examination.

Officials would not comment on what might have been found with the body parts. They also would not speculate on how long they think remains had been there, although one official indicated that it involves human tissue, not just bones.

Asked whether the case could still turn out not to be a murder, Wells replied, "It's a possibility."

Anyone with information is asked to call 618-259-6212.

Police probe yard in East Alton
Looking for evidence in woman's death

December 15, 2010 9:00 PM
By CYNTHIA M. ELLIS
The Telegraph

EAST ALTON - Police searched for clues Wednesday at a mobile home they believe could be connected to the apparent homicide of a woman whose body was found blocks away in early November.

The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis converged on a yard in the 300 block of East George Street in East Alton around daybreak, looking for possible evidence in the suspicious death of Crystal Terpening. Before state and local police could search the ground, they used four torpedo heaters to thaw the snow from an area on the southwest side of the property.

Capt. Brad Wells of the Madison County Sheriff's Department, commander of the Major Case Squad for this investigation, said investigators had issued a search warrant and were looking for evidence at the scene.

The site of the search is blocks away from where Terpening's body was discovered on Nov. 4 behind the East Alton Shopping Plaza. Since construction crews found the 26-year-old's body, members of the Major Case Squad have continued to track leads.

A neighbor said authorities told her that they were looking for some type of tool. The neighbor also said that police had been to the property the night before, looking to question people about Terpening.

It also was reported that two men were being questioned by police.

Wells said he couldn't comment about the search or whether anyone was being questioned in connection with the case. He said at this point, the Major Case Squad still was looking at all leads and for anyone who knew where and what Terpening had been doing in the days prior to her death.

Terpening is believed to have been at the mobile home sometime prior to her death. Her mother, Debrah Schooler, told reporters that she was informed by police Wednesday about the new lead.

Schooler said that her daughter reportedly knew the woman who lived in the mobile home.

A crime scene trailer from the Illinois State Police was set up in the parking lot of SGS Labratories, 300 George St. The property abuts the area where authorities were focusing their search.

In an odd twist, it was reported that the boyfriend of Bonnie Woodward, a 48-year-old East Alton woman who went missing on June 25, apparently was staying at the trailer where police were conducting the search. It is not known whether he was there during the same time as Terpening.

Police said it simply was a strange coincidence.

Woman's family to mark year since disappearance

June 18, 2011 5:32 PM
By CYNTHIA M. ELLIS

One year has passed since Bonnie L. Woodward vanished from the parking lot where she worked.

For her family and friends, it has been a year filled with birthdays, anniversaries and holidays all made bittersweet without their loved one there to share. The most heartbreaking part of it all is the silence, the frustration that there have been no telephone calls, no texts, no communication and no laughter.

Her sister, Bobbie Valdes, and the Alton Police Department are determined to find out what happened to her.

"She just vanished into thin air," Valdes said. "We will not stop looking for her."

The family is holding an awareness vigil Saturday, June 25, for the 46-year-old East Alton woman who disappeared June 25, 2010. The event will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Gordon Moore Park in Alton.

Since Woodward went missing, her case has taken investigators on several twists and turns.

"We've collected hundreds of pieces of evidence, but so far nothing has turned up to point us to where Bonnie is," said Detective Mike O'Neill with the Alton Police Department.

The 400-page report outlining the details of Woodward's disappearance sits atop O'Neill's desk.

"There's not a day that goes by that I don't think about this case, about Bonnie," O'Neill said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the police tip line at (618) 465-5948 or (618) 463-3505.
