Missing city woman sought

Posted Image
The mother of three, whose 27th birthday is today, was last seen Tuesday morning.

A Syracuse mother of three has been reported missing and city police are seeking help in locating her.

"We would consider this person to be missing under suspicious circumstances," said Sgt. Tom Connellan.

Sharon Nugent, of 206 E. Genesee Park Drive, was reported missing by her boyfriend Thursday. She is described as 5 feet, 5 inches tall and weighing 210 pounds. Nugent was last seen wearing a shoulder-length burgundy and black wig and a black, puffy trench coat, Connellan said.

Today is Nugent's 27th birthday. She has not contacted her family or her three children after she was last seen, which is highly unusual, Connellan said.

Nugent and her boyfriend have three children, ages 3, 7 and 8, Connellan said. Police didn't identify the boyfriend.

Nugent was at a birthday party at the Rolling Green Estates apartments in Syracuse before leaving between 2 and 3 a.m. Tuesday, Connellan said.

Her boyfriend said she came home and left for work at 5 a.m., Connellan said. But Nugent, who works for Express Personnel Services at Syracuse Stamping, never showed up. Nugent had worked for the temp agency since September and was never late, Connellan said.

Nugent's car was found covered in snow Friday night in the parking lot of a Crowley Street apartment complex, Connellan said. The car was taken to the county crime lab to be searched.

Detectives also searched Nugent's home, but found nothing pointing to a crime, Connellan said. There has been no activity on Nugent's cell phone.

The children are staying with their father, Connellan said.

Search continues for a missing mother of three

It's been 23 days since Sharon Nugent was reported missing. Her mother said she's never gone a day without talking to her 27-year-old daughter.

"I'm not giving up. I know I'm going to find her. I'm going to find her," Sharon’s mother Patricia Alexander said.

Sharon Nugent, of Genesse Park Drive in Syracuse, has been missing since February 6th. Her car was found in a parking lot at East Fayette and Croly Streets. Her boyfriend, James Guilford, 33, reported her missing two days later, and that very same day, he left for Georgia with the couple’s three children.

Patricia Alexander moved from Brooklyn to Syracuse as soon as she learned her daughter was gone, and she hasn't seen or heard from Guilford since then.

"I haven't spoke to him, so I don't know how he's helping with this investigation or not. I haven't spoke to him. My daughter would never, ever leave her kids and go anywhere," Alexander said.

At this point, Syracuse Police can only say that the investigation is ongoing, and as far as James being considered a suspect, they can't say he is. But, they aren't saying he isn't.

Boyfriend charged with missing woman's slaying

SYRACUSE, N.Y. A 32-year-old man has been charged with murdering his girlfriend, a mother of three who disappeared six weeks ago.

James Guilford was arraigned today on a single count of second-degree murder in Syracuse City Court. He's being held without bail in the disappearance of 26-year-old Sharon Nugent.

Although police have not found Nugent's body, Syracuse Police Chief Gary Miguel says investigators found blood in the master bedroom of the Syracuse home the couple shared.

Police also found a bloodstained hammer in Guilford's possession.

Guilford reported Nugent missing on February eighth, telling police she left for work two days earlier. Co-workers said she never arrived and her car was found in Syracuse on February ninth.

Guilford took the couple's three children to Atlanta, where he made statements to Syracuse police that led to his arrest.

Murder charge in missing persons case

March 24,2007

James Guilford spent close to ten years with Sharon Nugent. Together they have three children. So when Guilford left Syacuse for Atlanta, Georgia the same day he reported her missing, police knew something was wrong.

They found her car abandoned on Croly Street, just blocks away form her home. Sharon's mother told police that Nugent would never leave her children and that her daughter calls her every day.

A Syracuse man faces a murder charge after police find telling evidence. James Guilford alerted police that his girlfriend, Sharon Nugent, was missing in February. News 10 Now's Joleene Des Rosiers tells us why police suspect foul play.

Now with eyebrows raised, police obtained a search warrant for their home on Genesee Park Drive.

"There is extensive blood evidence in the master bedroom of this residence. Extensive blood evidence, and there's been an obvious attempt to conceal this evidence," Syracuse Police Chief Gary Miguel told reporters at a press conference Friday morning.

Police said Guilford came back to Syracuse this week for a family court hearing. They tracked him down at the Econo Lodge Hotel on James Street. Guilford came willingly, but he wasn't careful when he spoke.

Police Chief Gary Miguel

"Over a period of many hours, we questioned him, and he makes a number of very incriminating statements relative to this missing person investigation," Miguel said.

Police also said they found a hammer at Guilford's home in Atlanta. That too was washed in an attempt to erase evidence.
But still, one major piece of evidence is missing.

Assistant District Attorney Rick Trunfio

"It's always a challenge when you don't have a body, but it's just a challenge you overcome. Talking to Captain Walsh earlier, we talked about cases prosecuted in the past that have been prosecuted without a body, and just recently, Nicholas Wiley was convicted of murder in the first degree without a body," First Chief Assistant District Attorney Rick Trunfio told reporters.

The investigation is ongoing.

Man indicted in case of missing girlfriend

July 25, 2007

A Syracuse man was indicted today on a murder charge in connection with the disappearance of his girlfriend who has never been found.

James E. Guilford, of 206 Genesee Park Drive, is facing a single count of second-degree murder. He is accused of intentionally causing the death of Sharon Nugent on or about Feb. 6.

Syracuse police have said the mother of three was last seen in early February. A blood-soaked mattress and a hammer helped persuade them that she's dead. Guilford reported her missing Feb. 8, the same day he packed up the couple's children and left for Georgia.

Police believe Guilford bludgeoned Nugent to death in the bedroom the couple shared.

Witnesses say Syracuse man told them he hid body

May 01, 2008

Syracuse, NY - James Guilford admitted killing Sharon Nugent and disposing of her body in a dumpster behind an East Side apartment building, five witnesses testified today.

The testimony could prove critical in Guilford's murder trial since authorities were never able to find Nugent's body,

Guilford made the admission while in the presence of his lawyer and a prosecutor at police headquarters on March 23, 2007, after he had been arrested in the case. He then accompanied two detectives and his lawyer to the Hilltop Apartment Complex, where he pointed to a parking lot behind 1809 E. Fayette St. as the place he disposed of Nugent's remains.

Guilford told authorities he put the body in a side-loading dumpster and not a top-loading container like what was in the parking lot that day.

Guilford was charged after police found a blood-soaked mattress and hammer in his residence.

Jurors in the case today heard a crime lab DNA expert testify that blood found on the walls and ceiling of the residence -- some of which had been concealed under paint -- appeared to match Nugent's DNA.

The prosecution rested its case this afternoon and the defense was expected to report later whether it had any witnesses to call.

Syracuse man sentenced to 25 years to life for killing girlfriend

BY ALICE MAGGIORE FRIDAY, MARCH 7TH 2014

Fri, 07 Mar 2014 15:40:14 GMT — There were a flood of tears outside Onondaga County court Thursday morning as the mother of a Syracuse woman murdered got some closure in her daughter's death.

But Patricia Alexander is still left with so much pain and so many questions. Her daughter, Sharon Nugent's body was never found. She addressed the court as the man who took her life was sent off to prison.

The sentencing marked the end of an emotional seven years for her family as Alexander faced James Guilford in court. "He has robbed my daughter of the chance to see how beautiful they are and love them and to nurture them and to care. I am a loving grandmother, but I can never replace a mother's love."

Alexander stayed composed as she spoke directly to the man who took her first born. She had hoped time would help erase the pain, but Nugent's body has never been found and the agony of not knowing has left her heartbroken. "I cry everyday wondering if I'll ever recover her body. It pains me not to be able to say goodbye and in some way I will forever keep hoping that I will have that opportunity to say goodbye to my child someday."

Nugent was last seen alive in 2007. She never got a chance to say goodbye to her children. Guilford was their father and was later convicted of stabbing Nugent to death, then tossing her body in a garbage dumpster like a piece of trash. "You treated Sharon Nugent like a piece of garbage. There are no reasons, no excuse for what you've done," said Judge Anthony Aloi. "If I had in my power Mr. Guilford, I would sentence you to spend the rest of your life in a garbage dumpster," he said.

With his head down, Guilford had nothing to say as the judge imposed the maximum sentence of 25 years to life in state prison. Outside court, the family's pastor thought of the children. "It's sad also for these children who have lost not only a mother but a father in there. So there really are no winners in there today," said Pastor Daren Jaime of the People's AME Zion Church.

In January, Guilford was found guilty for the second time. The State Court of Appeals threw out the original 2008 conviction last June, ruling Guilford's 49-hour sleepless interrogation by Syracuse Police violated his rights. The court cited "actual coercion inherent" in that marathon session, as tag team of detectives questioned him, before placing him in a cell for eight hours.

Guilford ultimately confessed to the crime in the presence of his lawyer, saying he put Nugent's body in a garbage container. The confession was not used during the recent retrial. Police think Nugent's body burned before they found out what happened.
