Search for missing woman continue

By LAUREN DELGADO / Daily News

Published: Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at 20:23 PM

A $10,000 reward is being offered for information to help find Marie Jane Carlson, a Fort Walton Beach woman who has been missing since October 2011, according the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

The reward money has been raised from donations from Carlson’s family and friends.

“Please help us find the person or persons responsible for this heinous act and the loss of a loving, beautiful soul,” reads her fundraising page.  “Marie never put herself first. We need to put her first now.”

Carlson was last seen Oct. 18, 2011, by James Flanders, the father of her then newborn daughter, at their home on Revere Avenue, FDLE Special Agent Ronnie Austin said. Flanders told law officers she was at the house when he left between 6 and 7 p.m.

On Oct. 19 a text message from Carlson’s phone was sent to several people. The message said she left Fort Walton Beach to do something she always wanted to do.

The infant was being babysat when she disappeared, Austin said.

Flanders found her vehicle Oct. 21 at Northwest Florida Regional Airport, according to a news release from the FDLE. Investigators determine

Carlson did not leave the area by plane or by a vehicle rented at the airport. She also did not leave the United States.

Flanders has since moved to Arizona with the child.

Marie Carlson’s ex-husband, Jeff Carlson of Kentucky, who she also has a daughter with, reported her missing and endangered to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office on Oct. 24.

Austin said Jeff and Marie Carlson were in close contact before her disappearance. She spoke to their daughter the weekend before her disappearance and made no mention of any plans to leave Fort Walton Beach.

Marie Carlson also spent time with her sister the weekend before she disappeared and did not mention any plans to leave or a desire for a change, Austin said.

The disappearance is not a cold case, Austin added. Law enforcement is still pursuing leads.

“We just want to make sure everyone in the community knows it’s still fresh to us,” he said.

Carlson is 5 feet, 4 inches tall, weighs 130 pounds and has brown hair and brown eyes. She has a tattoo on her right wrist that says “Pray Without Ceasing.”

Anyone with information about her disappearance is asked to contact Austin at 850-595-2046 or Sheriff’s Investigator Keith Matz at 609-2000.  Anonymous tips can be made through Emerald Coast Crime Stoppers at 888-654-TIPS or at www.emeraldcoastcrimestoppers.com.

TNT series uncovers new evidence in local cold case

By KELLY HUMPHREY | Daily News

Published: Monday, April 20, 2015 at 04:08 PM.

FORT WALTON BEACH — For three and a half years, Esta Bridges has been waiting to learn more about the 2011 disappearance of her sister, Marie Carlson.

She wasn’t sure what to expect when she sat down to watch Friday’s episode of “Cold Justice,” the TNT series that highlights unsolved cases.

Friday’s episode focused on Carlson’s case.

“I watched it 10 times,” Bridges said on Monday. “I watched it until I had it memorized, just like I’ve memorized every other detail since my sister went missing.”

Carlson disappeared a little less than two weeks after her 37th birthday. She was last seen on Oct. 18, 2011, by James Flanders, the father of her then newborn daughter, at their home on Revere Avenue in Fort Walton Beach, according to a Daily News story from 2013.

Working with Carlson’s family and investigators Neslie Suhi-Moore and Keith Matz from the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, the hosts of “Cold Justice” uncovered new evidence in the case.

“The investigators have told me that they’ve received several calls and leads about the case since the program aired,” said Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Michele Nicholson.

At the end of the episode, Suhi-Moore and the program’s host, Kelly Siegler, told Bridges and other family members that they believe Carlson was murdered.

They explained that they were turning over their new evidence to the State’s Attorney’s office.

“While I can’t disclose any details about the case, I can tell you that this is an active investigation,” said Bill Bishop of the Okaloosa County branch of the State’s Attorney’s office. “We can’t give any timetable on what action we might take, but we are definitely working on this case.”

That’s good news for Bridges, who said she simply wanted justice for her sister.

“We are so lucky that Nesli and Keith at the Sheriff’s Office never gave up on this,” she said. “And I can’t say enough about Kelly and the people from ‘Cold Justice.’ They were wonderful. They held our hands through the whole process, and continue to check on us to see how we are doing.”

Cochise man charged with murder in cold case

Posted: Wednesday, May 20, 2015 12:00 pm

Carol Broeder

A Cochise man is in Cochise County Jail, awaiting extradition in connection with a Florida murder cold case.

Forty-six year old James Ty Flanders was arrested Thursday, May 14 by the U.S. Marshals Arizona WANTED Violent Offender Task Force, along with the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) Tucson Intelligence Unit and investigators from the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO), the DPS said in a statement issued May 15.

Flanders is accused of the murder of Marie Carlson, of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., who disappeared from her home Oct. 17, 2011, and has not been seen since.

Carlson’s missing person case aired April 17 on the television show, “Cold Justice,” on the TNT network.

A statement issued May 14 by the OCSO gives the following account of her disappearance:

Flanders, the father of her then newborn child, reportedly last saw Carlson on Oct. 17, 2011, at the home on Revere Avenue (in Florida) they shared with Flander’s wife.

Flanders told investigators Carlson was there when he left the home between 6 and 7 p.m., that day.

Carlson’s ex-husband, Jeff Carlson, reported her as missing/endangered to the OCSO on Oct. 24, 2011.

Jeff Carlson, who lives in Kentucky with their eight-year-old daughter, became concerned after being unable to make contact with Marie.

On Oct. 19, 2011, several people received a text message, purportedly from Marie Carlson, which said that she had left Fort Walton Beach on Oct. 18, 2011 to do something she had always wanted to do.

It did not contain any information as to what this was or where it was to be done.

Those who received the message included Flanders, Jeff Carlson, and other family members and friends in the Fort Walton Beach area.

On Oct. 21, 2011, Flanders located Carlson’s vehicle at the Northwest Florida Regional Airport (NFRA).

The investigation into her disappearance determined that Carlson never left the Fort Walton Beach area by flying out of or renting a vehicle from the NFRA, now known as the Destin – Fort Walton Beach Airport.

Since 2012, Arizona DPS detectives have assisted the OCSO and Florida Department of Law Enforcement with the investigation into Carlson’s disappearance, its statement said.

Through their investigation, DPS detectives determined that Flanders had lived in the Tucson area and was currently living in Cochise.

On May 5, the Okaloosa County/Circuit Court issued an arrest warrant for Flanders on second-degree murder, the DPS statement said.

Nine days later, the three agencies served the warrant at a home in Cochise, with air support provided by Ranger 54 from the DPS Southern Air Rescue Unit.

DPS detectives took Flanders, who was outside at the time, into custody without incident, the DPS statement said.

Flanders was booked into Cochise County Jail, where he is awaiting extradition to Florida, which may take a month or longer, said Spokeswoman Carol Capas with the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office.

A check of Cochise County Court records reveals that on July 26, 2013, Flanders had filed a paternity case against Carlson regarding a minor child.
