Women continue search for sister more than 25 years after disappearance
By Jeff Miller

DANSVILLE — It’s been more than 25 years since the disappearance of Rose Marie Gayhart, but her sisters, Laurie Travis and Brenda Avery, haven’t given up hope.
Both women travelled to Wilson Academy in Rochester on Jan. 28 to attend Community Cry for Help Missing Persons Awareness Day.
The forum was hosted by the family of 22-year-old Alonzo Williams of Rochester, who disappeared Nov. 22.
“I’ve been fighting, fighting hard,” Travis said about searching for her missing sister. “And I’m not giving up.”

Taking her story across the nation
Dansville woman tells story on national radio, reaches out others who have missing loved ones
By Jeff Miller

DANSVILLE, N.Y. —
In February, the Express ran an article on two sisters who haven’t given up finding closure on their sister’s disappearance.
Rose Marie Gayhart was reported missing March 14, 1985. Twenty-seven years later, to the day, her sister, Laurie Travis of Dansville, took to the airwaves in a half-hour phone interview on a nationally syndicated radio talk show, “The Dr. Laurie Roth Show.”
On the show, Travis explained the situations surrounding her sister’s disappearance, that it might have been connected with a domestic altercation, and the lengthy investigation process so far.
Travis was joined on air via phone link with Susan Murphy Milano, host of her own crime-victim radio talk show; and Monica Caison, founder of North Carolina-based Community United Effort Center for the Missing.
“It was good to be able to get on the radio, tell my story and get the word out,” Travis said.
Travis has also expressed her gratitude to having teamed up with a network of others in the Rochester region who have missing loved ones. They have been able to rely upon each other for support.
Travis became close with the family of Alonzo Williams, a Rochester teen who went missing in November. News of his death hit hard, she said, when his body was found March 23.
Incidents such as this, the lengthy and somewhat frustrating search for her sister, plus recent connections and what seems to Travis to be an increase in local missing persons in the area has spurred her to help others with finding the resources they need to conduct their search beyond policing agencies. Such help was not available to her 27 years ago.
“I’m just glad I can get the word out and help somebody else,” she said. “That’s a good feeling, to help someone else.”
Aside from Travis, Gayhart’s family consists of her parents, Don and Dorothy Gayhart of Hornell. Sisters include Cheryl Towner and Travis, who live in Dansville; sisters Brenda Avery and Donna Collister who live in Conesus, and sister Elizabeth Aquilina who lives in Rochester.
Avery has recently joined Travis in finding closure to their sister’s case.
