Five years later, Hoke girl is still missing

Published: 05:44 AM, Mon Oct 18, 2010 By Jennifer Calhoun Staff writer

RAEFORD - Friday marked the fifth anniversary of the disappearance of a Raeford girl, who was thought to have left her home with a man 15 years her senior.

Diana Gonzalez was 14 years old when she took off with a family friend, Jose Barrera-Pacheco, said Sheriff Hubert Peterkin.

Peterkin said she went willingly with Barrera-Pacheco, who was 29 at the time of the abduction.

Gonzalez's mother told officials that she had received a call from Barrera-Pacheco at 6 a.m. on Oct. 15, 2005, saying he loved her daughter and that the family would never see her again.

When Gonzalez' mother checked her daughter's bedroom, Diana was gone, she said.

The case was considered a kidnapping, although Gonzalez is thought to have gone willingly with her captor, Peterkin said.

A felony warrant was issued for Barrera-Pacheco's arrest on June 26, 2006.

"The case is still open," Peterkin said.

A news release from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children described Gonzalez as a Hispanic girl with black hair and brown eyes. At the time of the kidnapping, she was 5 foot, 4 inches tall and weighed 110 pounds. She was last seen wearing a blue T-shirt and blue jeans.

Law enforcement officials believe the pair may have traveled to Laurinburg, California, Florida or Mexico, in a black, four-door Honda or a white van.

She could be using the last name "Sanchez" or "Sanchez-Gonzalez" as an alias. Barrera-Pacheco could be using the alias of "Barrera" or "Pacheco."

Barrera-Pacheco is described as a Hispanic man, with black hair and brown eyes. He is 5 foot, 4 inches tall and weighed 150 pounds at the time of the kidnapping.

Anyone with information, should call the Hoke County Sheriff's Office at 875-5111, or the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children at (800) 843-5678.
