Teams search park trails for missing Oakland girl

Posted: 11:43 a.m. Sunday, July 14, 2013

amber_alert.jpg

OAKLAND, Calif. — Oakland police joined local teams Sunday searching park trails for any sign of a missing 21-month-old girl who disappeared from a parked car in East Oakland last week.

Search teams were concentrating their efforts on a series of trails near the home of Daphne Webb's father along Keller Avenue and Greenridge Drive, Oakland police spokeswoman Johnna Watson said.

A staging area was established near an apartment building at 750 Canyon Oaks Drive, in West Richmond.

Daphne Webb was reported missing on Wednesday morning by her father, John Webb, who left the girl in his car with an adult family member that is mentally disabled, police said.

While the father was in a store, a potential suspect was seen walking away from carrying the girl, Watson said.

The California Highway Patrol issued an Amber Alert for the missing girl, and dozens of officers and police canines have since descended on the area in an effort to locate her.

Daphne Webb is described as black, with short, curly black hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing orange two-piece pajamas with pink hearts, and pink socks, Watson said.

The suspect was described as a black or Hispanic woman between 30 and 40 years old with long black hair who was wearing a light-colored top and blue jeans, Watson said.

Anyone with information on the girl's whereabouts is asked to call Oakland police at (510) 238-3641 or 911.

OAKLAND -- The search for a missing toddler continued Sunday as police comb trails near her family's home, authorities said. Police are searching trails in areas along Keller Avenue, east of Interstate 580, and near 21-month-old Daphne Viola Webb's home on Greenridge Drive in the Oak Knoll neighborhood. As of 9 a.m., search crews were at 750 Canyon Oaks Drive, according to an Oakland police spokeswoman.

The toddler has been missing since Wednesday, when her father, 49-year-old John Anthony Webb reported her missing to police. Webb told police that after 11 a.m. he left the child and his mother in his SUV and went into Gazzali's Supermarket at 79th Avenue and International Boulevard to quickly purchase an energy drink. Webb said when he returned to the car, Daphne was missing from the back seat.

Authorities have concentrated their searches on areas in Oakland that Webb said he and his daughter frequented, and have searched the Martin Luther King Jr. Regional Shoreline Park in addition to the Oak Knoll neighborhood.

Though not considered a suspect, Webb was arrested on child endangerment charges for leaving his daughter in the car with his 87-year-old mother who suffers from dementia. Authorities did not file charges against Webb and he has been released from Santa Rita Jail.

Daphne Webb's Mom and Dad Speak at Vigil
Little girl was reported missing Wednesday July 10
By Terry McSweeney |  Thursday, Jul 18, 2013  |  Updated 11:26 AM PDT

It has been more than a week now, and still no sign of missing 21-month old Daphne Webb of Oakland.

Family and friends gathered for a vigil at 79th Ave. and International Boulevard Wednesday evening to keep the story alive for the media and those who live nearby.

The vigil was held at the same spot where Daphne was first reported missing last Wednesday by her father, 49-year old John Webb.

He told police he left Daphne in his SUV for two minutes while he bought a couple items at a corner market.

He says when he came out, she was gone.

Webb was arrested last week for child endangerment for leaving the child in the car unprotected, but the D.A. decided against pressing charges. Webb says he's been talking to police.

”I went down there (to the police station) today and they told me they have tips from all over, including Atlanta, Georgia, as well as local tips but some people are on drugs and their stories are far-fetched,” he said.

Oakland police want to know when was the last time anyone else saw the girl alive. Nobody, other than the father, reports seeing her since June 27. That's 12 days before she was reported missing to police.

Webb says there’s an explanation. “I talked to the mother on the phone and she heard the girl in the background. Even before any of this happened, I was a home body-I never went nowhere,” he said.

Alameda Superior Court records show the mother, 31-year old Kiana Davis, was convicted in April of child endangerment when police found her passed out behind the wheel of a parked car with Daphne in the back seat. Davis told police she had been drinking and taking drugs.

The mother could only visit the girl occasionally as part of her child endangerment conviction.

Her father says she didn’t visit the daughter at all during the week before Daphne’s disappearance is “too personal” to discuss.

Davis too has been in touch with police about progress in the investigation.

”Nothing like they’re going to find her today, but we are hopeful, we are prayerful. I just want her to come home, we miss her,” she said.

The family has started a website at www.findbabydaphne.com in the hopes someone knows something about her whereabouts.

Family continues looking for missing Oakland baby
Saturday, July 27, 2013

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- Family and friends of missing Oakland baby Daphne Webb are continuing to pass out fliers, 17 days after her disappearance.

On Saturday they concentrated in the area where the baby's father lives, on Mountain Boulevard and Keller Avenue.

The girl's grandfather, Kevin Davis, says every day since she went missing has been hard.

"Oh, man, it's unreal because there's no way to prepare for something like this," he said. "And I'm sure a lot of people can say that about their specific situation, tragedies they go through, but for us there's really no way to even prepare."

Daphne disappeared from the back of her dad's car.

Davis said the family has no information on Daphne's whereabouts.

Anyone with information on the girl's whereabouts is asked to call Oakland police at (510) 238-3641 or 911.

Dozens gather at vigil in Oakland for missing girl
Wednesday, July 31, 2013
Ama Daetz

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- About 40 people came together in Oakland in hopes of bringing a missing girl home. Daphne Webb is not yet 2 years old. Wednesday night, relatives and friends lit candles and prayed for her safe return.

A mother's tears could be seen as her family prays for the safe return of her little girl, Daphne Webb. Daphne's father, John Webb, says she was taken out of his car three weeks ago while he stepped inside a store on International Boulevard in Oakland. He did not attend Wednesday night's candlelight vigil at Sequoyah Community Church.

"We would have liked for him to be here. For whatever circumstances or reasons, he couldn't be here, I'm sure are his own," said Kiana Davis, Daphne's mother.

But he wasn't the focus. The gathering was all about Daphne, a little girl no one has seen in weeks.

"This is the hardest thing I know personally that I've ever had to deal with. This has rocked my family to its core," said Davis.

"I miss holding her, miss hearing her cries and her laughs and I'm just praying like everybody else that she comes back and comes back soon," said Chinna Jewell, a family friend.

The family's goal is keep Daphne's name in the news so people don't stop looking for her.

"With all this going on with the Zimmerman trial and all the protests and the airplane wrecks and all the news is collecting every day, it's a new story every day, but this is our story right here," said Kevin Davis, Daphne's Grandfather.

It's a story that right now leaves the family with little information on where Daphne could be.

"We don't have any closure, any answers, any leads, any anything, and that's just a weird place to be in," said Davis.

Until Daphne is found, the family says they will continue to hold vigils so that no one ever forgets that their little girl is still missing.

The family for a missing 21-month old Oakland girl held a vigil Wednesday night, three weeks after she disappeared.

Daphne Webb’s family is trying to keep the toddler’s story alive, hoping someone will come forward with information. She disappeared July 10, when her father says he left her in the car with his 87-year-old mother, to quickly run into a  convenience store on 79th Avenue.

No suspects have been arrested, and family members have have been visiting various Oakland neighborhoods, passing-out flyers to try to generate leads.

“If anybody knows anything, somebody knows where she is,” Daphne’s grandfather Ken Davis said. “We just want to hear from that person.  We want our baby back.”

The family has set up a website to help find Daphne at www.findbabydaphne.com.

Anyone with information on the girl's whereabouts is asked to call Oakland police at (510) 238-3641 or 911.

New lead triggers search for missing Oakland girl
Posted: 12:14 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23, 2013

OAKLAND, Calif. — Armed with new information, Oakland police announced Friday they would be launching a weekend search of an “open space” within the city for any trace of a missing 21-month-old girl.

Authorities also announced the FBI was contributing $10,000 to a reward fund for any information leading to the whereabouts of little Daphne Webb.

While remaining vague about exact details, Oakland police spokeswoman Johnna Watson said the Saturday morning search would involve 50 participants and employ special equipment.

“It will be a land search,” she said. “It will be an open space.”

Watson said detectives have been actively investigating the case since the little girl was abducted from her father’s car on July 10th.

When asked why search this particular area, Watson said it was the result of “new information. This case has never stopped… As we receive information is that takes us to this identified area, we’re going to go and we’re going immediately…Time is of the essence.”

Daphne Webb’s father, 49-year-old Oakland resident John Anthony Webb, told police a stranger abducted his daughter from his car, where she had been sitting with her 87-year-old grandmother, who suffers from dementia.

Since Daphne's disappearance, her family has canvassed neighborhoods throughout Oakland and Alameda, knocking on doors and handing out fliers.

Oakland police have also conducted several intense searches including a field behind the father's home and park on the Oakland Estuary near the Oakland International Airport but there has been no sign of the young girl.

Daphne is described by police as black with short, curly black hair and a deformity in her left ear. She is 2 feet tall and weighs 30 pounds.

She was last seen wearing orange two-piece pajamas with pink hearts.

Anyone with information about Daphne's whereabouts is urged to call the Oakland Police Department's Missing Persons Unit at (510) 238-3352 or 911.

Daphne Webb: Motorcycle riders make 'love run' for missing toddler

POSTED:   09/07/2013 06:38:34 PM PDT
UPDATED:   09/07/2013 07:11:22 PM PDT

VALLEJO -- Dozens of motorcyclists made a "love run" Saturday between Oakland and Vallejo to highlight the plight of a missing Oakland toddler.

"She's still missing, and we're still looking for her," said Roslyn Robinson, great-aunt to Daphne Viola Webb, whose second birthday is next month.

The procession was the latest event held by Daphne's family since her disappearance from East Oakland was first reported by father John Webb on July 10.

Robinson, born and raised in Vallejo but now a Pleasanton resident, conceived of the motorcycle ride as another way to ensure Daphne's name remains in the media and on people's minds until she is found.

Robinson called the East Bay Dragons Motorcycle Club of Oakland to ask if they would participate. The riders were met by members of Daphne's family, as well as community members and people associated with the Mackbee Foundation, which helped provide food and refreshments.

"Our president, Tobie Gene Levingston, put out a call to all the motorcyclists in the Bay Area," said Ali Ar Rasheed, the Dragons' chief business manager and one of those who made the trip from Oakland.

More than 50 or so motorcyclists answered that call, making the trip from the group's clubhouse in East Oakland, about 10 blocks from where Daphne was last seen.

Webb told police that someone took the child from his black Ford SUV on July 10 while his 87-year-old mother was in the car. He said he had gone into a convenience store, and his mother had dementia.

Webb was briefly arrested on suspicion of felony child endangerment but released with prosecutors declining to file charges.

Rasheed, himself a father and a grandfather, said the incident puts fear into the hearts of parents.

Daphne was the only child of mother Kiana Davis-Webb, who also grew up around the Vallejo area, said Pamela Davis, Daphne's great-aunt.

Davis last saw her great niece in June, just a month before her disappearance.

"She was a very loving baby, and she didn't care who held her or picked her up," Davis said.

Authorities are offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to the whereabouts of the child. For more information about the family's activities, go to www.findbabydaphne.com.

Any information about Daphne can be forwarded to the Oakland Police Department at 510-238-3641.

Family of missing Oakland 2-year-old will hold coat drive on Sunday

By Kristin J. Bender Oakland Tribune

POSTED:   12/05/2013 06:32:37 AM PST

UPDATED:   12/05/2013 06:33:04 AM PST

OAKLAND -- To mark five months since Daphne Viola Webb went missing, her family is trying to help others in the spirit of the holiday season.

On Sunday, the family of the 2-year-old will, in conjunction with the Emmanuel Temple Church, hold a coat drive from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church at 900 6th Street in Vallejo. They are calling the event "Give a Coat -- Warm a Heart." They will be accepting new and used coats and donating them to those in need. Complimentary hot coffee and donuts will be served.

To keep her story in the public eye, the family has held candlelight vigils, a march from the Oakland Police Department to Oakland City Hall, news conferences and were there when police searched the waterfront, East Bay Regional Park District land and trails and areas near the father's Oakland hills home for the child or her body.

"The family's effort in finding baby Daphne will never end until she is brought home. We still have our hopes up,'' said the child's maternal grandfather Kevin Davis.

Daphne has been missing since July 10, when her father, John Webb, 49, said someone snatched her from his black Ford SUV when he went into a convenience store and left her with his 87-year-old mother, who has dementia, in the SUV at 79th Avenue and International Boulevard. He remains a person of interest in the case.

There is a reward of up to $20,000 for information leading to the whereabouts of the child.

Missing Oakland Toddler’s Father Commits Suicide

By Mario Sevilla

Mon May 5th, 2014 5:35pm America/Los_Angeles

OAKLAND (KRON) — The family of missing 21-month-old Oakland toddler Daphne Webb has confirmed that John Webb, the child’s father, committed suicide last Friday.

Rosyln Robinson, the child’s relative, said that Webb, 49, died in his home in Oakland. The family learned about his death Saturday morning.

“We are at a loss for words,” Robinson said. “What do you say? how do you react to that?

“It’s the same as everyone else, it’s a state of shock.”

On July 10, 2013, Webb told police that he left the little girl in his vehicle when he went inside a grocery store on International Blvd at 78th in Oakland.

The child’s paternal grandmother was also in the car but she suffers from dementia, police say. When John Webb came outside, the child was missing.

Oakland police arrested Webb on suspicion of felony child endangerment on July 10 because they were concerned that he left Daphne in the care of his mother, as she suffers from dementia.

But Webb was released from custody two days later after the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office said it was declining to file charges against him.

Webb was a person of interest in the case but was not a suspect.

Kevin Davis, Daphne’s maternal grandfather, Webb and Webb’s wife, Kiana Davis, have remained in contact. Robinson said they had spoken with Webb earlier in the day Friday.

Kiana Davis, is not considered a suspect in the kidnapping. She reportedly has a restraining order against her in connection with a drug conviction earlier this year.

Daphne’s mom remains in a rehab facility where she was at the time of Daphne’s disappearance.

Daphne is described by police as black with short, curly black hair, a deformity in her left ear and as 2 feet tall and 30 pounds.

She was last seen wearing orange two-piece pajamas with pink hearts.

Family of Missing Oakland Toddler Daphne Webb Remains Hopeful

By Christie Smith

Updated at 9:15 AM PDT on Friday, Jul 11, 2014

The family of missing Oakland toddler Daphne Webb remain hopeful the girl will be found.

A prayer vigil was held for Daphne on Thursday, which marked one year since the 2-year-old girl was reported missing by her father, John Webb, who committed suicide in May.

"In the advent of her father committing suicide we're still reaching out," said Kevin Davis, Daphne's grandfather. "Still hopeful, but no closer than we were a year ago."

Webb told Oakland police he left Daphne in his car with his mother, who has dementia, while he ran into a convenience store. When he returned, Daphne was gone.

Davis had hoped to sit down with Webb to get some answers.

"We didn't have the kind of talk we wanted to have," Davis said. "We alluded to it. We need to sit down and talk, but he avoided us as much as I hate to say it. That's what happened."

Webb was a person of interest in Daphne's disappearance.

Marc Klaas, who heads the Klaas Kids Foundation, has helped Daphne's family and said the anniversary vigil is important.

"As long as the situation is kept alive in the public consciousness, there is hope of jarring someone's memory or someone coming forth with something they might know," Klaas said.

The Alameda County District's Attorney's Office is now handling the case and are investigating new leads.

For now, Daphne's family said the girl remains in their thoughts.

"We haven't forgotten her," Davis said. "We love her and are still hopeful."

Exclusive: Daphne Webb’s grandfather speaks on second anniversary of her disappearance

By Vince Cestone, KRON and Jeff Bush

OAKLAND (KRON) — A somber anniversary Friday, as it has been two years since baby Daphne Webb went missing.

Her father had claimed she was snatched from her car seat when he went inside a liquor store at the corner of 79th and International Boulevard in Oakland.

Daphne’s father, who was once considered a suspect in her disappearance, committed suicide back in May.
