Vigil held for missing Choupic man

About 50 friends and family members honored a Choupic resident missing since the start of the month with a prayer vigil Wednesday at one of his favorite places — the Raceland Rodeo Arena.

Chad Babin, whose 32nd birthday was Wednesday, has been missing since May 1. His family filed a report with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office May 3.

The vigil Wednesday kicked off with an American flag carried on horseback, a fitting tribute to the man who loved ones say was a cowboy above all else. Babin's ex-fiancée, Sarah Jackson, said she fell for him on their way to a rodeo.

"We stopped at a stop sign, and he got out of the truck — in the middle of the road — and did a Dwight Yoakam impersonation," she said. "That's when I was like, 'OK, you got me.'"

The two knew each other for nine years, dated for five, and have a 4-year-old daughter, Jaylyn. Jackson told the crowd she's never known a father to be more proud of his child and that Babin would often brag about Jaylyn and show Jackson pictures of her, narrating as he went through them.

"No matter where this horrible nightmare leads or what the outcome is, I will feel a little better knowing he showed that sweet baby girl what love is and she will never, ever have to wonder if her daddy loved her," Jackson said.

Babin would do anything to make others laugh, she said, adding that the world would be boring without him.

Though he can't prove it, Clyde said he has an idea of what happened to Chad and doesn't believe his son is still alive.

"I know him well enough to know he'd have shown up," he said. "You don't just leave your car keys and your cellphone. He didn't just disappear."

Angie Champagne said the family is not losing faith despite uncertainty of her younger brother's whereabouts. During the vigil, she directed some of her words to him.

"I miss having to sweep up the dirt you tracked in my house," she said with a laugh. "I miss finding your dip cups when you'd visit. I miss us being annoyed with each other and then laughing about it. I miss our hourlong phone calls."

Champagne said her brother was kind-hearted and that she misses his smile and laugh.

"He'd give you the shirt off his back," she said. "If he didn't have a shirt, he'd make one to give you."

Babin is described as about 5 feet 10 inches tall and 150 pounds, with fair skin, brown eyes, short brown hair, a goatee and a mustache. His family is offering a $22,000 reward for information leading to his discovery, and Crime Stoppers Bayou Region is offering $1,000 for information leading to an arrest.

To make a report, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-743-7433 or crimestoppersbr.org.

Authorities: Body found in canal may be missing Choupic man

Authorities believe a body found in the Dixie Canal in Choupic this morning may be a resident reported missing early last month.

Lafourche Sheriff Craig Webre said the body was sent to the Jefferson Parish Coroner's Office and hoped it could be identified today.

"It was in a state of advanced decomposition," he said. "We're hoping the autopsy can assist in determining the cause and estimated time of death."

The sheriff said the body is likely that of Chad Babin, 31, whose family reported him missing May 3, two days after he was last seen. His wallet was found with the body.

"We have reason to believe it probably will be Mr. Babin, but we haven't confirmed that," Webre said.

A boater called the Sheriff's Office after discovering the body about 6 a.m. in the water near the Sawmill Road Boat Launch, Webre said.
