Missing children reports on rise in Montgomery County

By Mark Gokavi

Staff Writer

In 2014, Zaden McKnight was one of nearly 1,500 children reported missing in Montgomery County, the third most in Ohio, according to the state Attorney General’s annual missing children clearinghouse report released last month.

Of the 18,097 children reported missing statewide, most were located and recovered safely, but 610 remained missing. Only Franklin (3,820) and Cuyahoga (3,347) counties had more children reported missing than Montgomery (1,464). Hamilton County (1,339) was fourth.

Other area counties reported missing children number were: Preble 18; Darke 55; Miami 69; Clark 243; Greene 103; Warren 69; Butler 485. Montgomery’s total increased by 117 from 1,347 in 2013. Last year, 53 percent of the missing children were female.

“Right now, hundreds of children are missing in Ohio, and we must never stop asking questions, never quit pursuing leads, and never give up the search,” Attorney General Mike DeWine said before a launch of 610 balloons — one representing each missing child — at a Columbus school in May. “We will never give up hope, and we will never forget.”

Currently, Bellbrook police are searching for 14-year-old Savannah Swartz and checking out leads that she was at an area restaurant Monday night. Swartz was reported missing after last being seen at a Sunday family gathering on Brookwood Drive, according to Bellbrook police who can be reached at (937) 848-8484.

Swartz is described as 5-foot-4 white female, about 150 pounds with black hair, brown eyes and two piercings in her lower lip. She was last seen wearing a black T-shirt, denim shorts with holes in one leg, black-and-white boots and bracelets. According to police, she has two piercings in her lower lip.

Montgomery County Sheriff Phil Plummer said Tuesday that an endangered missing child advisory was issued for 17-year-old Alyssa Maupin and her 7-month-old daughter, Nevaeh. But hours later someone reportedly dropped the baby off at the Reading Police Department near Cincinnati. They were last seen June 12 in Dayton.

Plummer said his department had reports of 143 missing or runaway juveniles in 2014 and have 13 missing people so far in 2015 — 10 juveniles and three adults.

“Anytime a parent is involved with a kid running away, call right away and we’ll take their police report,” Plummer said, adding that the sheriff’s office prints off free child ID cards for parents during public events. “We ask them to have photographs of them, any kind of descriptors (including dental records) where we can enter it into the national computer system.”

Zaden McKnight, 4, was reported missing along with his mother, Nichelle McKnight, in March 2014. The elder McKnight was found deceased April 11, 2014 near the banks of the Stillwater River. Dayton police have said they believe Zaden is dead.

Among Ohio’s missing in 2014 were 148 children aged from birth to 5 years old; 1,000 from 6 to 12 years old and 16,949 from 13 to 17 years old, most being runaways. Others are taken by non-custodial parents.

There were 21 attempted child abductions, 14 involving girls and seven involving boys. In 82 percent of those situations, the suspects were driving vehicles. In 34 percent of the abduction attempts, children were walking to or from school. Five missing children died last year — four being murdered and one drowned.

The missing children hotline phone number is (800) 325-5604.
