Greene County residents remembered one of their own Sunday evening.

Sunday marked a year and a half since Audrey May Herron was last seen leaving her job at the Columbia-Green Long Term Health Care Facility in Catskill.

On Aug. 29, 2002, the 32-year-old wife and mother of three finished her shift, said goodbye to her co-workers, and she hasn't been seen since.

Family and friends of Herron's gathered for a candlelight vigil Sunday evening as a way to keep her memory alive.

Mother Shirley Olmsted said, "It's a reminder that she's still missing and she's still out there, and there's a great deal of loving family dying to bring her home."

Herron's case is one of 30 unsolved cases of missing people nationwide to be featured by a North Carolina based group's cross country road trip next month.

EARLTON - A benefit and motorcycle run being held later this month will go toward continuing the search for Audrey May Herron, a Freehold woman who has been missing for almost two years.



The second annual "Riding for Audrey" benefit will be held Saturday, Aug. 28, according to a press release from Herron's friend, Marie Parker. Parker said the motorcycle run will begin at Brennan's on state Route 81 in Earlton and will consist of a 90-mile round trip that includes stops at other local businesses that have continued to support the search.

Following the run, Brennan's will host eight hours of live music, food, prize raffles and games, according to Parker. She said music would range from country to rock by bands including Dusk Till Dawn, FEFF, ForeFront, Rich Goddeau & Luke Weiler, Joe Roy Jackson Band, Shattered Glass, Time at Last and DJ Andy DiSalvo. Raffled items will include gift certificates, food, clothing items, a closet organizer, free oil change and tire rotation, stuffed animals, garden tools and more.

Herron, who was 31 at the time, was last seen Aug. 29, 2002, by her co-workers at the Greene County Long Term Health Care Center in Jefferson Heights. Friends said Herron walked to her 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee and told her co-workers she would see them at work later in the week. Investigators said she never arrived home to her husband and three children in Freehold and has not been seen or heard from since.

General admission to the benefit, including on-site camping, is $20. Admission for children under 13 is $12.50 and children under 8 are free. There is a $10 sign-up fee for the motorcycle run. All proceeds will go to the Audrey May Herron Reward/Donation Fund.

The benefit has been sponsored each year by local businesses, Parker said. She said the motorcycle run will include stops at Augie's Café on U.S. Route 9W in Coxsackie, The Halfway House on Main Street in Ravena, the Shell Inn in Westerlo and McNerney's Brass Rail in Norton Hill. Sponsors for this year's event include Greenville Packing, Tip Top Furniture, Twin-Tech Motorcycle Shop, Gould Erectors & Riggers, Laborers Local 190, NFS Logging and Frick Trucking. Food was donated for the event by the Midway Café, Black Horse Farms, Lossee's Deli, Stewart's Shops and Carter's Country Farms.

Herron is described by police as being a white female, 5 feet tall, weighing 105 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes. She was driving a black Jeep with New York license plate X23-SUV when she left work.

Friends and family of a missing Greene County woman hold a motorcycle ride in her honor.

Sunday marks the two year anniversary of Audrey Mae Herron's disappearance. She was last seen leaving her shift at a Health Care Facility in Catskill. Those who knew Audrey said they will never give up the search for her.

Marie Parker, Audrey's relative, said, "We just want everyone to know that she's still out there and we will never...I promise never to give up looking for her, ever."

Another year has passed and there is still no sign of Audrey May Herron or the vehicle she was driving when she disappeared after leaving work on the evening of Aug. 29, 2002.

However, police continue to investigate the case and follow any new leads that develop while family and friends continue to try to keep Herron's story alive in the hopes that someone might know what happened to her.

Herron, 33, was last seen by her co-workers at the Greene County Long Term Health Care center in Jefferson Heights where she was employed as a licensed practical nurse. She left work at the end of her shift at approximately 11:15 p.m. Friends said the mother of three walked out to her 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee and told her co-workers she would see them at work later in the week.

She never arrived home to her husband and children in Freehold and she hasn't been seen or heard from since. Her vehicle hasn't been found either.

Senior Investigator David Darling with the state police at Catskill said investigators have been working on the case without a break for the past two years.

He said an investigator is assigned to the case at all times and occasionally other investigators assist as necessary.

"We do one or two leads a week anyway," Darling said. "It's still an active investigation."

A state police press release said it is believed Herron's route home would have taken her along state Route 23, state Route 32, Caniff Road, Plattekill Road and county Route 67.

Following her disappearance police and volunteers conducted several searches using dogs, divers and aircraft. Police said close to 1,000 leads have been pursued and exhausted with no viable information being developed to help find Herron or her vehicle.

Herron's friend, Marie Parker, said a private investigator from Port Jervis is working the case pro bono and friends and family continue to try to keep the missing woman's story alive.

"We're just plugging away at trying to keep everything out there," Parker said. She said family and friends have placed Herron's information on yard signs in the area, added her to an "adopt a missing person program" based in New Hampshire, (Correction for the journalist: Nebraska, not NH) and are preparing to put Herron's picture in shopping cart ads at Price Chopper grocery stores throughout the state. In addition, a remembrance bench dedicated to Herron will be placed either at the hospital where she worked or the Greenville town park. On June 26, Herron's picture also appeared on the hood of No. 94 Darrell LaMoure's race car at Infinion Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. The race was a nationally televised event.

"When somebody's missing it's really hard because you have no place to grieve and no closure," Parker said. "At this point, for me, I just want to find out what happened to her."

"She needs to be home so people can grieve the right way," Parker said. "This not knowing is not good. It's not healthy. I know that."

Parker said a candlelight vigil will be held at Greene County Long Term Health Care center at 7 p.m. tonight.

Herron is described by police as being a petite white female, 5-foot tall, 105 pounds, with hazel eyes and light brown hair. She was driving a black 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee with New York license plate X23-3UV. Anyone with information about her disappearance is asked to call state police at Catskill at (518) 622-8600.

Family continues search for missing woman

It's been a little more than two years since a Greene County woman disappeared.

The last time anyone saw Audrey May Herron was on August 29, 2002. The mother of three disappeared after leaving her shift at a Catskill heath care center.

And to this day, her family isn't giving up hope that she is still alive.

Audrey's father and stepmother, Ray and Jeanne Turk, joined Brian Taffe in the newsroom Saturday.

"I believe there is a lot of people out there who are still on top of the investigation and want to know what happened to Audrey. She did have a lot of friends, and she still has three beautiful children," Ray Turk said.

A special dedication, on the day Audrey Mae Herron would have celebrated her 34th birthday.

Family friend Marie Parker said, "Stone is forever and I will forever look for her, I don't want anyone to forget her."

This stone bench sits where the mother of three was last seen, at Columbia-Greene Long Term Health Care Facility. Herron worked there as a nurse, finished her shift on August 29th 2002 and said good bye to her co-workers never to been seen or heard from again.

Parker added, "It's not even frustration anymore, it's anger towards whoever did something to her or whoever's preventing her from coming home. Because how can they watch all the time and not let us know where she is? I can't do this"

While some fear the worst for most, the hope of being reunited with their friend, mother and daughter remains strong.

Audrey's mother, Shirly Olmstead, said "I think my grandchildren have it all in the right contents. When they see a falling star they wish mommy would come home, so I'm going to keep wishing for that."

Audrey's father, Raymond Turk, said "My daughter never missed my birthday as long as I can remember. This is just one way of helping to pay her back to let her know that we're still thinking about her and we still all love her."

Thirty-six balloons with special messages, 34 for her birthday and another two for the years she's been missing were released into the air with the hope of reaching Herron in some way.

E-mailer claims to be missing woman; police suspect hoax

CATSKILL - State police in Catskill and Canadian police are working to identify an Internet subscriber who sent an e-mail claiming to be Audrey May Herron, a Freehold woman who disappeared in August 2002.

The e-mail was sent in October to a Web address established by friends of Herron. In it, the writer claimed to be Herron and said she was fine, living in Miami and planning to return home soon. But police said they traced the e-mail to Burlington, Ontario, and determined it was written by a person who subscribes to Cogeco Cable Internet service.

State police Senior Investigator David Darling said on Friday that authorities still are trying to determine who sent the e-mail and whether it was legitimate. He said the e-mail probably was a hoax but he couldn't be certain.

If the e-mail was a hoax, it would be up to Canadian police to decide whether the writer should be charged, Darling said.

In an effort to determine whether the missing mother of three was in the Burlington, Ontario, area when the e-mail was sent, police there have asked people there to be on the lookout for her, Darling said. He said state police in Catskill currently have no local leads but have followed several from out of state.

The e-mail is the first lead suggesting Herron may be outside the United States, he said.

"This one is a little harder because its out of the country," Darling said.

He said state police are working with the Ontario Provincial Police and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and that local troopers and their counterparts north of the border are in contact every other day.

Herron was last seen on Aug. 29, 2002, at the Greene County Long Term Health Care Center in Jefferson Heights, where she worked as a licensed practical nurse. She was 31 at the time and describes as white, 5 feet tall and 105 pounds with light brown hair and hazel eyes. She was wearing green medical scrubs and a blue turtleneck.

The vehicle she drove at the time was a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee with New York license plate X23-3UV.

CATSKILL - May 20 will mark the 1,000th day that Audrey May Herron has been missing, and while her case remains open, police said last week they have no new leads.

To mark the anniversary, friends and family members plan to light 1,000 candles in Herron's memory near a remembrance bench dedicated to the Freehold woman at the Columbia-Greene Long Term Health Care Facility in Jefferson Heights. Herron worked at the facility as a licensed practical nurse before she disappeared after leaving work the evening of Aug. 29, 2002.

Organizers of the May 20 event are soliciting candles and hope to get the 1,000 needed. As of Friday afternoon, 77 had been received.

"The plan is we're hoping to get 1,000, one candle for each day," said Marie Parker, a friend of Herron's who has planned several efforts to keep the missing woman's story alive. Parker said it doesn't matter what type of candles are donated as long as they are free-standing. She said tea-lights would be sufficient.

According to the Web site devoted to finding Herron, the candles will be lit "as a symbol that we have not forgotten each day that passed without her in our lives."

Herron was 31 when she was last seen by her co-workers. She never arrived home that night and neither she nor her 1994 black Jeep Grand Cherokee have been seen since.

In October, a message was e-mailed to the Web site devoted to Herron. The writer claimed to be the missing woman, said she was fine, was in Miami, Fla., and would return soon. The message was traced to Burlington, Ontario, and was written by a person who subscribes to Cogeco Cable Internet Service, police said.

"I won't stop until I find her," said Parker, who is hoping for a large turnout at the May 20 event, which is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Parker said she hopes to get at least one candle from each state and some from outside the United States.

She is hopeful that eventually, something done in Herron's memory will spur a person who knows something about the case to come forward.

It's been a little more than a thousand days now and still no sign of Audrey Mae Herron.

Audrey's family and friends lit 1,000 candles Friday night at the Audrey Mae Memorial Bench at the Columbia Greene Long-term Healthcare facility.

That bench sits in the parking lot where the nurse was last seen back on August 29, 2002. Family members said they are constantly amazed by the support they've gotten and want to thank everyone who's helped.

Audrey Mae Herron's family and friends lit 1,000 candles Friday night at the Audrey Mae Memorial Bench at the Columbia Greene Long-term Healthcare facility.

Herron's stepmother, Jeanette Turk said, "And people we don't even know from all over the world are sending candles of hope and well wishes and it just means the world to us."

Everyone at last night's vigil all still hope she's alive, and that someone knows where she is.

Also in attendance were Mary and Doug Lyall, the parents of missing University of Albany student Suzanne Lyall.

It has been nearly three years since Audrey May Herron of Freehold disappeared without a trace, and the mystery of what happened to her after she left work on the night of Aug. 29, 2002, continues to weigh upon her family and friends.

A Web posting last fall by someone claiming to be Herron proved to be a hoax, and another Web posting made on July 9 is being investigated but has so far led nowhere.

"It's just very sad," said Marie Parker, a friend of Herron. She said she's still hoping to find out what happened to her friend though she is not expecting the search to end with good news.

Parker maintains a Web site devoted to Herron to keep her story in the public eye at http://audreymayherron.expage.com/. She also has helped organize candlelight vigils, a campaign to put Herron's pictures on shopping carts at Price Choppers in the state, the placement of a remembrance bench to Herron at the Greene County Long Term Health Care center where she worked and an annual poker run and benefit event.

The third annual poker run will be held Saturday, and Parker said she could not keep having such events without the support of local businesses. She said the bands that will perform are all doing so for free and the proceeds from the event will go to the reward/donation fund for Herron and to the Center for Hope, a not-for-profit organization with the mission of providing resources to educate, assist and support families and friends to cope with the ambiguous disappearance of a loved one.

The third annual "Riding for Audrey" will be held at Brennan's School House Inn on state Route 81 in Earlton. Sign-up for the poker run starts at 8 a.m. with participants leaving at 10:30 a.m. The poker run will follow a course up to the Foxenkill Bar & Restaurant in Berne and then to Nick's Waterfall House in Gilboa before returning to Brennan's. A benefit event begins there at 12:30 p.m. and will feature five live bands, a softball tournament, a horseshoe tournament, raffles and beer, soda and food. General admission is $15 per adult, $8 for children under 8-11 years old and free for children under 8. All you can eat and drink is included in the admission cost.

Parker said if information about what happened to Herron does not come to light by March the reward fund gets divided into trust funds for the missing woman's three children. She said it is up to Herron's father, Ray Turk, to decide if a new fund would be established after that time. Turk could not be reached for comment Friday.

On Thursday investigators with the state police at Catskill said the Herron disappearance case is still open but that there have been no new leads as of late.

Investigation into a posting made to a Web site about Herron on Oct. 8, 2004, by a person claiming to be the missing woman was determined to be a hoax by a juvenile in Burlington, Ontario, investigators said.

In the posting the juvenile had claimed to be Herron, stating that she was fine, in Miami, Fla., and would return home soon.

On July 9, 2005, another posting was made to the Web site's guest book by a person stating they knew Herron because they "followed her the night she was abducted." The person went on to say they "search for Audrey all of the time, since the last time I saw her on that rainy night of 8/22/02." Audrey disappeared on Aug. 29.

The poster also said they wish they could say more but their life is in danger. The person concludes their comments with the sentence, "Taking a course on Target Focus Training: Learning how to kill, learning how to protect myself from the fate that was bestowed on Audrey."

Police said they are continuing to investigate the posting with the assistance of America OnLine.

Riding for Audrey
Ray Turk, the father of Audrey Mae Herron, held an annual motorcycle benefit in honor of his missing daughter.

Turk, and many of Herron's friends want closure, and believe events like the motorcycle benefit may one day raise enough awareness to shed some light on Herron's mysterious disappearance.

"It has been three years. It will be three years at the end of this month, and nothing has happened. I'm getting a little sick of it. I'd love to know what happened to my daughter," said Turk.

Family and friends say the lack of closure has been very difficult for them to accept.

Marie Parker, a friend of Herron's said, "There's still three kids waiting for mom to come home. There's a mother, a father waiting for their daughter, a husband waiting for his wife, thousands of friends. There is a whole community wondering what happened to this girl."

Herron was last seen leaving the Columbia-Greene Long Term Health Care Facility, where the mother of three worked as a nurse.

Possible Break in Herron Case

There's a possible break in the case of missing Greene County woman, Audrey May Herron. We've learned a man recently came forward - saying he drove Audrey May Herron to Florida nearly three and half years ago. It's information that loved ones just learned about -- investigators say they're looking into it.

It's the latest glimmer of hope for loved ones like Marie Parker.

Marie Parker said, “You get that little, oh my god, she's alive, kinda goes through your head.”

FOX23 NEWS has learned that a truck driver recently came forward telling state police investigators that he gave Audrey May Herron a ride to Florida around the time she went missing -- August 29, 2002. Herron was last seen leaving her job at the Columbia Greene long-term health facility -- her black jeep vanished too. Greene County District Attorney Terry Wilhelm confirms to us that state police investigators are looking into this latest lead.

Parker said, “Audrey wouldn't get in a vehicle with anybody.”

Parker says it's another interesting lead but she has her doubts.

Parker said, “If this is the case -- where is that Jeep? There's no way that girl would leave her kids, her family, her mother, no I just don't see it.”

Three and half years have brought many leads and many dead ends. And says this latest twist still leaves more questions than answers. That's the toughest part.

Parker said, “There's just been a lot and not one thing has panned out other than that girl is still missing.” Hoping against hope this time could be different.

Parker said, “If we can get this to Florida, get her pic up, somebody sees it, god for bid we're wrong and we don't do anything right away.”

And parker says they may know more on what investigators discovered this weekend. We will of course keep you posted on really what has been a big mystery

New lead emerges in disappearance of nurse

State Police are investigating a new lead -- a possible out-of-state sighting -- in the case of missing Catskill nurse Audrey May Herron.

Herron, a licensed practical nurse, was 31 when she vanished 3 years ago after finishing her shift at 11 p.m. at the Columbia-Greene Long Term Health Care Facility. She said goodbye to co-workers in the parking lot and drove off in her 1994 black Jeep Grand Cherokee, heading for home in Freehold, Greene County, about 12 miles away. Neither she nor her vehicle have been seen since that night of Aug. 29, 2002.

Investigators have pursued numerous leads. Searches by police, family and friends and local residents shortly after her disappearance turned up nothing. Police have treated the case as a homicide since her disappearance.

Now there's something new to look into.

"We're working an out-of-state lead, and we are speaking to an individual who saw a woman who may look similar to Audrey," State Police Capt. Wayne Olson said. "We don't have any credible evidence at all that this is Audrey."

Olson, who heads the Troop F Bureau of Criminal Investigation, based in Middletown, said the new information "is one of hundreds of leads that we've followed on this case up to this point, and this is a lead that is dealt with just like all those others."

He declined to name the state where the lead originated. Investigators debunked media accounts over the past couple of days, saying there was no truth to a report that a truck driver told police recently that he picked up Herron that night and drove her to Florida.

A year ago this month, investigators looked into yet another lead that involved contacting Canadian authorities in an attempt to trace the sender of an e-mail to the Herron Web site from a person purporting to be the missing mother of three. It proved fruitless.

Those close to Herron have made efforts to keep her name in the public eye. A $20,000 reward has been posted.

Motorcycle rally in memory of missing person

This week marks four years since Audrey Mae Herron’s disappearance, and this weekend, friends and loved ones gathered to keep the hope alive that Audrey will be found. This weekend's motorcycle tour in her memory benefits the Center for HOPE. The goal is to keep Audrey's story in the public eye and raise awareness about other missing persons.
