Kansas City, Kan. native and professional boxer Franchesca Alcanter is taking on a new challenge.

George Clark, Alacanter's manager, said the fight is something Alcanter has looked forward to for sometime.

"I'm excited about it," he said. "I think she can make a statement in this sport."

Clark said Alcanter has worked hard to prepare herself for this event. He said she has looked good in workouts.

Four Months Later, Kara Kopetsky's Family Still Searching

Last Edited: Wednesday, 05 Sep 2007, 10:11 PM CDT
Created: Wednesday, 05 Sep 2007, 10:11 PM CDT

Kara Kopetsky's family was hoping someone could still tell them where their daughter was, four months after she disappeared. Kansas City News

BELTON, MO. -- The family of a missing Belton teenager is asking the public to don't stop looking for her. It's been four months since anyone has seen or heard from Kara Kopetsky, 17.

Everywhere you go in Belton, you see these signs. A constant reminder that Kopetsky is still missing. It's also a sign that even now this community will not let her disappearance be forgotten.

Jim and Rhonda Beckford, her parents, say their goal is to paint the town purple, Kopetsky's favorite color. Purple ribbons were tied to trees and purple signs were in yards.

"So anytime you see the ribbons or signs you remember she's still missing and keep looking for her," Rhonda said.

Kopetsky was last seen leaving Belton High School May 4. She didn't take anything with her and hasn't used her cell phone or bank account since then.

"We never thought it would go this long as far as it has," Jim said.

"Four months later and we don't know more than we did day one. How does someone, especially a 17-year-old-girl, disappear," Rhonda said.

For the past four months, her family has tried to stay positive, but four months is a long time.

"I try to keep my hope alive," Rhonda said. "It's hard for me to believe she'd go four months without having any contact because I feel my daughter, I feel she loved us."

A huge group of volunteers helped pass out the new signs a couple weeks ago. The sign's message is simple: she is still missing, there's a reward for information, so call police.

Kopetsky would have been a senior this year and her family said she was looking forward to her senior year. They hope someone out there knows something. The reward is now $20,000 for information in the case.

Sense of dread unfolds after body is found in Belton

By MIKE SHERRY and BRIAN BURNES
The Kansas City Star

On a warm and breezy Friday night, the lure of homecoming brought a steady stream of cars to Belton High Schools football stadium.

For some, though, the game with St. Joseph Central took a momentary backseat to a more pressing question: Is it Kara?

Just hours earlier, a crew surveying for the Missouri Department of Transportation had found a body in thick underbrush near Route Y and U.S. 71. That spot was less than two miles from the high school where Kara Kopetsky vanished the morning of May 4.

She hasnt been heard from since.

Was it, in fact, Karas body?

We all hope it isnt, pray it isnt, but I dont know, said Austin Huffman, a 17-year-old senior who would have counted Kara among his classmates this fall. She has been missing for so long.

About 1:30 p.m. Friday, workers for the highway department found the body, which was deteriorated, said Steve Porter, a MoDOT spokesman. Several hours later, authorities removed the body from the scene to begin the forensic examination.

Law enforcement authorities said the body was so badly decomposed that they could not determine its gender, its age or a cause of death.

Asked whether the body could be that of the missing teen, Detective Sgt. Brad Swanson of the Belton Police Department said, Im not going to jump to any conclusions.

The department, he said, knows of two other missing teens: a girl about 14 or 15 years old who ran away two weeks ago, and a 17-year-old boy who also was classified as a runaway.

Swanson said Fridays find appeared to be the body of someone who was at least a teenager, and not that of a child.

This morning, the Jackson County medical examiners office will attempt to determine a cause of death. Swanson said that, because authorities had dental records and DNA on file, they expected to make a quick determination about whether it was Karas body.

Along with the remains, authorities found what appeared to be athletic pants and a knit-type shirt. Surveillance tapes made the day of Karas disappearance showed that she was wearing blue jeans when she left the school.

There were no other personal effects that might help identify the body, Swanson said.

Word of the discovery quickly reverberated through the community, where Find Kara signs dot front yards, five months after the 17-year-olds disappearance.

Jerry Holmes and his wife, Shelley Yeager, turned out for the game. Earlier they had taken note of a homecoming parade float dedicated to finding Kara.

Its everybodys fear, Holmes said, but they hoped that if it was Kara, the find would provide closure for the family.

Mother says body in Belton is not Kara

10/6/07

BELTON, Mo. The mother of a missing Belton girl said Saturday that the body found Friday afternoon near U.S. 71 Highway and Route Y is not that of her daughter.

Rhonda Beckford told NBC Action News reporter Russ Ptacek that Belton investigators contacted her shortly before 6 p.m. Saturday and told her that the body is not 17-year-old Kara Kopetsky.

Belton Police confirmed the news.

Kara, who stands 5-foot-5 and 125 pounds, disappeared May 4. Her cell phone hasn't been used and there's been no activity in her bank account since her disappearance.

Police have not identified the remains found Friday at this time.

From Kara's website:

10/06/07 - The body found on Friday in Belton, MO has been determined to not be that of Kara. While the family is very happy with this news, our hearts go out to the family of this person. It is our hope that the police will be able to determine this person's identity soon.

This only intensifies our belief that Kara is alive and out there somewhere. Whoever knows where she is, please contact the police or one of the family members to help us find Kara. We know someone knows something that can help. Please have mercy on her family and give us something to find Kara.

Kara Kopetsky's Friends, Family Gather At Vigil

November 5, 2007

BELTON, Mo. -- Family and friends of Kara Kopetsky are keeping her memory alive in an effort to generate new leads in her disappearance.

The Belton teen was last seen six months ago.

Supporters gathered on Sunday night at the Belton community center, a place where local teens gather.

Kara's mother hopes that one day soon, they will hold a welcome home party there for her daughter.

"God has given me the strength to do what I need to do to find out what happened to Kara and bring her home. And that's just what I'm doing. I'm taking one day at a time," said Rhonda Beckford.

There is a $20,000 reward for information that helps solve the case of this missing teen. Anyone with information that may help find her is asked to call Belton police.

Almost a year later, UMKC students disappearance still a mystery

By MAR ROSE WILLIAMS
The Kansas City Star

The hardest time for Don Ross is early morning, when he drives to work through the darkness.

That is when he misses his son so much that the tears flow. It?s when he remembers the November morning a year ago when he dropped off his then 19-year-old son, Jesse Ross, at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Jesse, a sophomore, was among a group of 13 going to a Model United Nations Conference in Chicago.

Jesse was talking to his friends. I didnt want to disturb him, Ross recalled. I just waved. He waved back, and I drove off.

That was the last time Ross saw his son.

Wednesday will be the one-year anniversary of the day Jesse, called Opie by friends, disappeared after leaving a downtown Chicago hotel.

Not a day has gone by that Ross, an AT&T data processor, hasnt in some way searched for his son.

When you stop for a moment, reality sets in, Ross said. If you let the whole experience of what has happened set in, it will paralyze you. So, you just keep going.

Ross spends hours trolling law enforcement Web sites for discoveries of unidentified bodies or police pickups of people with amnesia. He has sent postcards featuring Jesses photo to law enforcement agencies across the country.

Last month he hired a private detective. The two will travel to Chicago this month to do interviews on Chicago television and retrace Jesses steps.

Ross has befriended online the families of other missing children. He chats regularly with Kelly Jolkowski, an Omaha, Neb., mother who after her son disappeared six years ago started Project Jason, which supports parents who have a missing child.

Ross has bonded with local parents, too, including Jim Beckford, Kara Kopetskys stepfather. Kopetsky is the 17-year-old Belton girl who disappeared after leaving Belton High School on May 4.

When unidentified female remains were found last month near Route Y and U.S. 71, Beckford reached out to Ross. The two live 10 minutes apart but have never met.

We talk on the telephone, Beckford said of the twos relationship. People dont know what it is like to have a person missing. Don knows.

Peter Duffey, the private investigator helping Ross, declined to answer questions about any new leads. But he did offer advice to parents.

Families should spend a little time together on things like personal defense, what-to-do scenarios, getting their children fingerprinted and DNA-profiled, even if they only keep the records themselves for possible future reference, Duffey said.

Anything can happen to anyone, and the more steps you take in advance in preparation for something like this, the easier you may make it for your loved ones to protect themselves or for authorities to find them if the unthinkable does happen.

Family Decorates Christmas Tree For Missing Belton Teen

Dec 04,2007

It's now been seven months since a Belton teenager vanished without a trace.  Kara Kopetsky disappeared May 4 and her family is now preparing to spend Christmas without her.

A tree that Kopetsky's family decorated stands outside of her parents church.  It stands in her honor, as a light of hope that she will come home safe.

Surrounded by family, Rhonda and Jim Beckford decorated the tree outside their church in purple, Kopetsky's favorite color, but one decoration is the most important.

"My mom said we have to have a dove on the tree, a dove signifies peace and love and hope and even after seven months we have hope we will find out what happened we will bring Kara home," Rhonda Beckford said.

Kopetsky, 17, was last seen leaving Belton High School on May 4.  Her family said she took no money, no clothes and they've never believed she ran away.

"We've experienced the seasons together, spring, summer, fall and now winter and it's a cold lonely time," Jim Beckford said.

Rhonda and Jim said it just doesn't feel like Christmas this year.

"Christmas is a time when families are supposed to be together and our family isn't complete because someone is missing: Kara," Rhonda said.

A loss each and every family member feels deeply, especially Kopetsky's eight-year-old brother Thomas.

"Every single Christmas I look forward to having fun with her and this Christmas I can't look forward to that," Thomas said.

Russell Gardens donated the tree, but they're not calling it a memorial tree.  They said some day soon when Kopetsky is home, it will just be another tree.

Hello, and welcome.

I do not know how that is possible. You may want to ask someone on MySpace. I am not a MySpace expert by any means.

Please be aware that we are not an investigative agency and this forum is not a case discussion forum as outlined in the rules. Your question is of an investigative nature. There are many forums where you can chat with others about the case. This one is for news and support information only.

Thank you.

They have a very good investigative team, so there is no doubt that they noticed this right away.

Websleuths is a good case discussion forum. You may want to try that one if you want to talk about the case.

The Unsolved Criminal Mysteries of 2007

Monday, December 31, 2007

Law-enforcement officials will have their hands full in 2008 trying to wrap up cases that left them stymied in 2007.

In Chicago, the search continues for two women missing from their suburban homes. Stacy Peterson, a 23-year-old mother of two from Bolingbrook, Ill., was reported missing on Oct. 29. Officials have named her husband, former police sergeant Drew Peterson, as a suspect.

Lisa Stebic, of Plainfield, Ill., disappeared on April 30. Her husband, Craig, has been named a person of interest in the case. He said he was working in the backyard and their two kids were out when Stebic vanished.

In Colorado, police have identified a suspect in the disappearance of an escort in Grand Junction. Lester Ralph Jones, an employee at an RV dealership, was named in connection with the disappearance of Paige Birgfeld, a 34-year-old mom of three. Birgfeld was reported missing on June 30. Authorities discovered her car burned a day later. Foul play is suspected.

The search continues for Kyle Fleischmann, a 24-year-old man from Charlotte, N.C., last seen leaving a bar on Nov. 9, as well as for Kara Kopetsky, a 17-year-old student from Belton, Mo., last seen at her high school on May 2.

Authorities in California have spent half a year searching for a 19-year-old college student last seen heading to a party at a convicted sex offender's house in West Los Angeles. Donna Jou, of Rancho Santa Margarita, disappeared June 23 when she left to attend a party at the rented home of John Steven Burgess, 35. He was arrested in July on a crack cocaine charge and has been named a suspect in Jou's disappearance.

Search continues for missing Belton,Mo., teen

January 16, 2008

The Belton, Mo., Police Department is seeking area residents’ help in finding a missing teenager who was reportedly seen in Louisburg two weeks after she disappeared.

Kara Kopetsky disappeared May 4, 2007, after not coming home from school and not showing up at work. Her cell phone was last used at 10:30 a.m. that day, and her bank accounts and credit cards have not been used since her disappearance.

Sgt. Lance Crull of the Belton Police Department said most of the tips that came in were from the Louisburg area. She was reportedly seen at the Conoco gas station/Burger King on May 17. Other possible sightings of Kopetsky were in Linn County.

Kara is 17 years old, 5 feet 5 inches and weighs approximately 125 pounds.

Up to $20,000 is being offered for information that leads authorities to finding Kara.

Sgt. Crull said the police department is distributing Kara’s photo to see if any other leads are sparked, because none of the previous leads have led to finding Kara.

Anyone with information should contact the Belton Police Department, (816) 331-1500, or the TIPS Hotline, (816) 474-TIPS. More information can be found by visiting www.findkarakopetsky.com.

Dear Kara: 'Granny' needs you

Before, when I would see or hear about a missing person, I would pray they would be found safe and returned to their family.

As time passed and something would be on the news or in the paper, I only gave it a passing thought. I think most people do this, until it happens to your loved one.

It doesn’t matter the length of time that passes; each day is as empty as the first. It doesn’t get any easier; in fact at first your hope is that they are away on their own free will, but as time passes you know it isn’t so.

You are so thankful for the support from the media and the public. With each bit of media coverage you hope someone will call with a tip. When strangers ask if they can give you a hug and say they will keep you in their prayers, sometimes these are the things that keep us sane, because there are times we are not so sure we are.

Kara Kopetsky has been missing for 9½ months, and today is her 18th birthday. She called me “Granny.” And today I should be taking her shopping. It was something we always did on her birthday.

I thank God for giving her to me for 17-plus years. But I wasn’t through loving her.

We are trying so hard to find her. Our hearts still beat, but there is an echo because of the piece that is missing. We start each day with a prayer, that this will be the day someone comes forward or Kara is found. We pray each night for the strength to get through another tomorrow. We plead to whoever knows anything, no matter how small, to come forward. They can call 911, the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS or the Belton Police Department at 816-331-1500. There is a $25,000 cash reward for information that brings Kara home.

Please help us bring Kara Kopetsky home. I ask you to remember the many who are missing, some for years.

Please don’t assume that any missing person is a runaway. Take a few seconds to say a prayer for their return.

Sandy Moore is the grandmother of Kara Kopetsky. She lives in Grandview.

Olathe police investigate discovery of woman’s burned body

She was small, young, white-skinned with light-brown hair — possibly dyed — and wore a silver-colored ring.

Her burned body was found Wednesday near the Kansas River in rural Olathe. Police were seeking information about the woman’s identity and her death, which is being investigated as a homicide.

Olathe Police Officer Bob Ahsens said city water treatment employees found the woman about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday while checking a water line near 83rd Street and Gardner Road. The body was found near an access road close to a boat ramp.

Police said the body appeared to have been burned recently. Ahsens said the woman appeared to have been 16 to 30 years old. She was about 5 feet tall and weighed 100 pounds.

The ring was on the middle finger of her right hand.

Posted Image

The body apparently is not that of missing 17-year-old Kara Kopetsky, who left Belton High School during the school day on May 4 and has not been heard from since.

Kara is white, 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs 115 pounds. She has brown hair and hazel eyes.

Ahsens would not say whether investigators had been in contact with other local police agencies with missing-person cases fitting the description of the body. Police have released no other information about the condition of the body, the cause of death or anything else found at the scene.

The Johnson County sheriff’s office is assisting with the investigation. A Kansas Highway Patrol helicopter and Johnson County Community College police academy cadets helped search the area.

The property is owned by Olathe and is part of that city but is surrounded by De Soto. The city operates water wells on the property, and water is pumped through De Soto and Lenexa into Olathe.

Anyone with information — especially those who frequent the Cedar Creek boat dock or who may recognize the ring — is urged to call Olathe police at 913-971-7455 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).

Team Hornbeck Racing (THR) will debut their 2008 driver lineup and the missing children that will initially be featured at the Montgomery County Speedway season opener this Saturday evening, April 5, 2008.

Through it’s partnership with The Shawn Hornbeck Foundation, THR features the age-progressed photos of area missing children on each of their stock cars.  The goal of the partnership is to raise awareness of child safety and missing children, in the hope that it will help parents safeguard their children, and lead to the recovery of the children featured.  The children being featured will be rotated throughout the season in order to provide exposure for as many of the area’s missing as possible.

In 2007, THR had three drivers featuring the photos of missing children.  The team had increased to five drivers for the 2008 season, with a representative racing in every class at the speedway.  Shawn Hornbeck Foundation CEO Craig Akers has been added to the roster, adding a second driver in the Mini-Stock class.  Craig’s car represents the foundation, and will display all six of the featured children.

This will help to ensure maximum exposure for the featured children.  The 2008 drivers and their featured children are:

·        Fastrak Late Model

o      42 Lane Ehlert – Tammy Rothganger, missing from Eldon, MO since May 16, 1984.

·        StreetStock

o      86 – Jake Robbins – Michael Johnson, missing from Independence, MO since November 1974

·        A-Modified

o      29 – Chris Spalding – Tracy Pickett, missing from Webb City, MO since August 12, 1992

·        B-Modified

o      1 – Christina Lemons – Sheri Johnson, missing from Independence, MO since November 1974

·        Mini-Stock (RAM)

o      1 Dylan Lemons – Branson Perry, missing from Skidmore, MO since April 11, 2001

·        Mini-Stock (RAM)

o      99 – Craig Akers – Kara Kopetsky, missing from Belton, MO since May 4, 2007

Representatives from Team Hornbeck Racing and The Shawn Hornbeck Foundation will be available for questions and comment when the gates open at 5:30 PM.  Drivers will be available as their schedules allow and arrangements may be made to interview them by contacting a representative of Team Hornbeck Racing after arrival at the speedway.  Family and/or friends of the featured missing children may also be on hand.

Team Hornbeck Racing LLC is a partnering of select race car drivers dedicated to supporting the mission of The Shawn Hornbeck Foundation by increasing the exposure of the area’s missing children.  THR also provides monetary support to the foundation’s programs to help safeguard children and locate and recover lost, missing or abducted children.  For more information please visit our website at www.teamhornbeckracing.com.

The Shawn Hornbeck Foundation (SHF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the prevention of the abduction of children and the search for and rescue of lost, missing or abducted children. The creation of SHF was Shawn’s family’s response when Shawn Hornbeck, then 11, was abducted in October 2002 while riding his bicycle near his Richwoods Missouri home. Shawn was found and returned to his family on January 12, 2007 after being held captive for 1,558 days.  For more information please visit their website at www.shfoundation.org.

Montgomery County Speedway (MCS), known as "The Fastest Little Track in Missouri", is the home track for Team Hornbeck Racing.  Located just a short drive west of St. Louis, MCS features dirt track racing every Saturday night (weather permitting) from April 5th through September 27th.  For more information visit www.themontgomerycountyspeedway.com.

Stock Car Racers In Montgomery County Help In The Search For Missing Kids

05 Apr 2008

(KTVI - myFOXstl.com)  --

It's not unusual to see stock cars covered with advertisements and sponsor's logos. In Warrenton they unveiled some cars with special signs.  They are adorned with the pictures of missing children. It's all part of Shawn Hornbeck Foundation and Team Hornbeck Racing. 17 year old Kara Kopetsky disappeared last May. Her mother is glad the teenage girl's photo is on a stock car. The mother, Rhonda Beckford told Fox 2, "The public forgets so fast you have to do things to make sure it stays out there because if people don't look she'll never be found."

Craig Akers the C.E.O. for the Shawn Hornbeck Foundation said, "The ultimate goal would have this lead to the recovery of one of the children featured on the cars."  They are using age progression photos in the cases of kids who have been gone for a long time.  Becky Klino's son Branson Perry disappeared 7 years ago, she said, "Does it get easier to live with? No. There's still that emptiness still that heartache."

The stock car drivers are happy to be part of a winning cause. Lane Ehlert is a driver, he said, "I really hope we can find them just keep awareness up saying we're still looking for them."  Organizers say the program also promotes child safety.

Racing team publicizes search for the missing

04/06/2008

WARRENTON — Next month it will be a year since Kara Kopetsky, then 17, was reported missing from her high school in Belton, Mo., near Kansas City.

Her mother, Rhonda Beckford, has not given up hope of finding Kara.

So when the Shawn Hornbeck Foundation contacted her earlier this week about putting Kara's picture on one of the Team Hornbeck Racing cars, Beckford jumped at the chance.

"It's all about creating awareness and getting the word out," Beckford said Saturday at the annual Warrenton Home and Garden Show, where Team Hornbeck debuted six cars for this year's dirt track season.

The team is a partnership of race car drivers that helps support the foundation's mission through financial support and by featuring photographs of missing children on its cars.

The foundation was formed by Shawn's family after he was reported missing in October 2002. Shawn was found in January 2007— along with William "Ben" Ownby of Beaufort, Mo. — in the Kirkwood apartment of their abductor, Michael Devlin.

Photographs of 30 missing Missouri children will be rotated throughout the season.

The team was founded last year and had three cars featuring photos of missing children. This year, said Craig Akers, Shawn's stepfather, they wanted to have a driver in every category: This season's first race was to be held Saturday night at the Montgomery County Speedway in New Florence, Mo., but was canceled because of weather.

Races are held every Saturday through September.

Ideally they would like to find all of the missing children, Akers said, but he hopes that through the team's efforts, families might at least be able to find some information about whether the children are still alive.

"You hope for a positive outcome, of course, but even a negative outcome is better than not knowing," Akers said.

That's what Becky Klino, of Skidmore, Mo., is hoping. Her son, Branson Perry, who was 20 at the time, was last seen in 2001. Since then, the family hasn't stopped looking for him, but they have heard nothing, Klino said.

"You never know where the leads may come from," she said. "This may help us find him, or at least we will know what happened."

Kopetsky searchers plan walk

Allen Edmonds

This Sunday marks the one-year anniversary of the day Belton teenager Kara Kopetsky left Belton High School during the school day and hasn’t been seen or heard from since.

Supporters of the now 18-year-old girl and her family are planning a series of events for the May 4 anniversary to continue to raise awareness of the need for information regarding her disappearance.

Beginning at noon, members of the Find Kara Committee will gather at Casey’s General Store on 163rd Street near Route Y to pass out fliers, bracelets and magnets. At 2:30 p.m., the public is invited to join supporters in the parking lot of the Cedar Tree Shopping Center to walk Route 58 from U.S. 71 to Route Y and back.

There is a $25,000 reward for information that assists in finding Kopetsky. Call the Belton Police Department with any tips or information at 331-1500, or the TIPS hotline at 474-TIPS. The committee asks for continued donations to the Find Kara Kopetsky Fund at the Bank of Belton, 204 Main St. For more information about scheduled events, go to www.SearchingForKara.com.
