Friends, family to hold vigil for missing girl
A candlelight vigil for Lindsey Baum, the McCleary girl who has been missing for more than a year, is set for 4 p.m. Saturday at Beerbower Park in McCleary.

A candlelight vigil for Lindsey Baum, the McCleary girl who has been missing for more than a year, is set for 4 p.m. Saturday at Beerbower Park in McCleary.

The vigil will last about an hour and will include a performance of a song about Lindsey by its writer, Erik Paul.

There also will be an open platform for anyone to share a few words, as well as a statement from Lindsey’s mother and one of her closest friends.

Missing girl's mother accuses firefighters of refusing to help

MCCLEARY, Wash. -- A controversy is brewing in McCleary, where Lindsey Baum disappeared 18 months ago. The group helping with the search is upset with local firefighters, accusing them of refusing to help find the missing girl.

"This Christmas will be 18 months that my daughter has been missing. I'm not going to let her be forgotten," says Melissa Baum, Lindsey's mother.

Lindsey disappeared in June 2009, walking home from a friend's house. Numerous searches for her have come up empty. Her mother works endlessly to find her.

Melissa remembered that this Saturday will be the McCleary Firefighters Assocation's annual holiday procession called "Santa Through Town." They decorate their fire engine with lights and pass out candy canes in an effort to collect food for a sponsored family in need.

"Very popular event. Well supported throughout the community," says Assistant Chief Paul Notts.

Because the procession travels down almost every street in town, Baum's mother hoped it could help publicize her cause.

"It wasn't going to cost them anything," says Baum. "It wasn't going to take any of their time. We were just going to add to something they were already going to do."

The firefighters were asked to hand out candy canes with Lindsey's picture and to hang a banner of the missing girl on their rig. But the firefighters declined.

"Our event is really geared toward people going through an unfortunate time and to blend the two really doesn't fit," says Notts.

"I was actually shocked. I thought the fire department would be supportive," says Melissa.

The town's volunteer firefighters say they want to help find Lindsey, but their procession, a 15-year tradition, needs to stay focused on helping the family they sponsor.

"We'd be more than happy to assist the Lindsey Baum camp, but it can't happen in this event," says Notts.

"Why can't they do both?" Melissa asks.

The dispute has both sides suffering community backlash. But they agree on one thing: their causes should not compete with each other.

A vigil for Linsdey is this Saturday, Dec. 18 at 4 p.m. at Beerbower Park in McCleary. The firefighters annual procession starts at 5 p.m. the same night.

On the evening of June 26, 2009, 10-year-old Lindsey Baum disappeared. Lindsey was visiting a friend’s house about a half-mile away (6 blocks) when her friend’s mother asked her to walk home before it got too dark. Lindsey left her friend’s house to make the approximate 10 minute walk back home. She was last spotted by a resident driving through town who saw Lindsey walking around 9:15PM. When Lindsey did not arrive home, her mother called police at 10:50PM.

Missing girl's mom: 'Not giving up till we find her'

MCCLEARY, Wash. - The mother of a young girl who vanished without a trace two years ago on Sunday says she sometimes dreams about her daughter coming home.

"Different scenarios, but she's home, and I can hold her," says Melissa Baum, mother of missing Lindsey Baum, through her heartache and tears.

"I look forward to her coming home," Melissa says. "I still believe she's out there - not giving up till we find her."

Sad birthday for missing McCleary girl

MCCLEARY, Wash. (AP) — There were balloons and cake in McCleary, but sadly the birthday girl remains missing.

Members of the Lindsey Baum search task force met in McCleary Thursday with Lindsey's mother, Melissa Baum, to mark her 13th birthday.

KXRO reports Melissa Baum released two balloons into the air in honor of her daughter.

Lindsey was 10 years old when she went missing June 26, 2009, while walking home from a friend's house.

Video released of person of interest in Baum case

The Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office has released surveillance footage that shows a person of interest in Lindsey Baum’s disappearance, and it plans to interview with two women seen talking to him in the video.

The person is shown in a now-closed convenience store in downtown McCleary about the same time that investigators believe the child disappeared June 26, 2009. She last was seen about 9:15 p.m. after leaving a friend’s home on Maple Street in McCleary.

The footage of the man making a purchase inside Mike’s Market on West Simpson Avenue contradicts his statements that he was “nowhere near McCleary” when Baum went missing, Grays Harbor Undersheriff Rick Scott said Thursday.

Search Continues For Missing Mccleary Girl

Hours after releasing a video that shows a person of interest in the case of the 2009 disappearance of a girl in McCleary, the Grays Harbor sheriff's office says it has located two women they wanted to talk to. Undersheriff Rick Scott says his agency has been able to find the two sisters, who are local to McCleary, and will interview them soon. The Grays Harbor sheriff's office released a video as part of the continuing investigation into the disappearance of Lindsay Baum, who was 10 when she vanished while walking home from a friend's house. The convenience store video shows a man who's been labeled a person of interest buying items. Scott says the man had previously denied being in the town the day Baum disappeared. Authorities have already searched his business and home. AP

The stunning discovery of three women found alive after allegedly being held captive for a decade inside a Cleveland, Ohio, home has reminded many of us about the thousands of other people still missing in America. 

Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight were teenagers when they all vanished separately, but they were allegedly held captive in the same house. 

A 52-year-old former school bus driver, Ariel Castro, and his two brothers have been arrested and are in custody pending charges in connection with the case.

The miraculous discovery of these three women has surely given hope to other families still searching for answers about their missing loved ones.

Washington families of missing kids join together for ‘National Missing Children’s Day’

TUMWATER – Families of missing children in Washington state gathered at the Walmart in Tumwater to draw attention to all the kids that have disappeared.

 

May 25 was National Missing Children’s Day and several families were on site representing their missing loved ones.

 

Families of Danica Childs, missing from Federal Way; Kelsey Collins missing from Everett; Teekah Lewis from Tacoma  and Lindsey Baum from McCleary.

 

Special guests included Steve Groene from Idaho and Wendy Cowell from Wenatchee, arriving to represent their lost loved ones.

 

Many agencies were on site to help support prevention education in our communities — the Washington State Patrol and Gordon’s Trucking set up trailers promoting their “Homeward Bound” program.

 

Washington state’s missing children’s cases were named by county. We have approximately 200 missing children’s cases to date and the majority receive no media attention.

Sheriff refreshes search for Lindsey Baum

The Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office has sent out an updated missing persons flyer for Lindsey Baum, who went missing in June of 2009 when she was 10 years old.

 

The Sheriff’s Office says it is continuing to follow up on leads in the high-profile case. Detective Keith Peterson is the assigned detective for the investigation.

 

Baum disappeared from McCleary on Friday, June 26, 2009. She was last seen at 9:15 p.m. when she left a friend’s house to walk home. At the time of her disappearance, Baum was 4 feet 9 inches tall and weighed 80 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a light blue hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and black slip-on shoes.

 

The Sheriff’s Office is asking the public for any information that might be useful to the case. A reward of up to $35,000 is being offered for information regarding the whereabouts of Baum and for the arrest and charges filed for the person or persons responsible for her disappearance.
