Missing boys' mother says she believes they're alive, pleads for their return

By Erik Gable Daily Telegram Posted Dec 20, 2010 @ 03:21 PM Last update Dec 20, 2010 @ 05:48 PM

MORENCI, Mich. —

The mother of Andrew, Alexander and Tanner Skelton said today she believes her boys are still alive somewhere and pleaded with anyone who might have them to return the missing boys to her.

In front of a small group of reporters this afternoon at Morenci United Methodist Church, Tanya Skelton said her intuition still tells her “that my boys are alive and that they’re with someone they know.”

“In my heart, I have as a mom not felt that my children are gone,” she said, sitting in front of photos of the boys taken during a trip to Harrison Lake State Park. “I feel they’re out there alive somewhere. I just don’t know where.”

The boys have been missing since Thanksgiving, and their father, John Skelton, is being held at the Lenawee County Jail on parental kidnapping charges. Investigators have said the information that have developed so far does not lead them to expect a positive outcome in the case, but Tanya Skelton said she still has hope.

“I have never felt that they’re not on this earth anymore,” she said.

She pleaded with anyone who might have the boys to “call 911 or take my children to the nearest police or fire station, hospital.”

“Even a fast food restaurant,” she said. “You could tell them to stay together and to go inside and say ‘we’re the three missing boys,’ and I know that my boys can do that.”

“Please bring them home,” she said. “Their mom and their sisters, their grandparents and cousins, aunts and uncles are waiting.” Tanya Skelton has two adult daughters.

Asked what she would like to say to her sons if they could hear her, Skelton tearfully replied: “I love you boys, I miss you and I want you to come home.”

Skelton described the last day she saw her sons before their disappearance.

“We were up fairly early,” she said. “They were going to spend the day with Grandpa and Grandma, my parents, and their cousin, and play all day and then their dad was going to pick them up there.”

Skelton said she felt no hesitation about sending them to their father’s house.

“They had been going with him on a regular basis, so I wasn’t concerned about that at all.”

Skelton said she had family coming and had contacted her husband to ask about picking up the boys early. He told her that wouldn’t be possible because they weren’t home at the time, and she agreed, thinking nothing of it.

“Three o’clock came, I went to the house and he wasn’t home,” she said. “And that’s when I found out he was at the hospital.” John Skelton was taken to the hospital after a reported suicide attempt.

Skelton said she doesn’t know what to think about her husband’s statement, which he made Thursday during a contempt of court hearing in the Skeltons’ divorce case, that he gave the boys to an unnamed organization.

“The first I had heard of that was in the courtroom,” she said.

However, she said she doesn’t believe his claim that he doesn’t know where the boys are now.

“I think he knows where they are,” she said.

Skelton said she has not asked to speak with her husband, but would be willing to do so if investigators thought it would help.

“If the FBI wants me to, I will, but right now, I’m doing what has been asked of me.”

Asked whether she thought John Skelton was capable of killing his sons, she shook her head and said “no.”

“The John I knew, and was in love with, would not,” she said. “That’s all I can say now.”

She said she has not spoken with any members of her husband’s family, and said she did not have a good relationship with his parents.

John Skelton’s parents have accused her of abusing the boys and said their son took them away to keep them safe. Tanya Skelton said those claims are untrue.

“I love my children,” she said. “I would give my life for my children. I have never hurt my children, nor would I ever hurt my children.”

Tanya Skelton said she doesn’t know why her husband would have taken the children, “other than to hurt me.”

“But along the way he’s hurt more than just me,” she said. “He’s hurt my family, his family. He’s hurt the whole country. He’s hurt their friends, friends who have to wonder at night where their friends are.”

She said she’s heard from one mother whose son is so afraid because of the Skelton boys’ disappearance that he has to sleep in his mother’s bed at night.

“I’m an adult, so if you want to hurt me, hurt me,” she said. “But leave my children and the other children out of it.”

Kathye Herrera, a friend of Tanya Skelton’s who has been acting as spokesperson for the family, said the boys’ disappearance has caused fear and uncertainty among many of the children who know them. She recalled a girl at church asking why a father would take his children away.

“And how do you tell a little 4-year-old?” Herrera said. “Because we don’t understand.”

Asked whether she believes she will ever forgive her husband, Tanya Skelton said: “As a Christian, eventually, yes, I will.”

With Christmas approaching, Skelton spoke fondly of past holidays with her sons, and said there will be presents under the tree for them. She said Christmas with Andrew, Alexander and Tanner is always “lots of fun.”

“My boys are full of life,” she said. “They’re all boy, and it’s loud and busy.”

She said her sons have never needed the latest, most popular toy to have fun.

“Give them a shovel, a spoon, a stick — it doesn’t matter, they’ll dig a hole with it,” she said. “And then they’ll find water and their dump trucks and the rest is history.”

Skelton said it will be a quiet, emotional holiday if the boys are still missing at the end of this week.

“I just want my boys home for Christmas,” she said.

Vigil set for missing Michigan brothers
Associated Press
Last updated: December 22, 2010 1:02 p.m.

ADRIAN, Mich. – A candlelight vigil is planned in Adrian on Thursday for three young Michigan brothers who were last seen on Thanksgiving in the care of their now-jailed father.

The mother of 9-year-old Andrew, 7-year-old Alexander and 5-year-old Tanner Skelton said she still believes they’re safe.

Tanya Skelton said her intuition still tells her "that my boys are alive and that they’re with someone they know."

"In my heart, I have as a mom not felt that my children are gone," she said. "I feel they’re out there alive somewhere. I just don’t know where.

“I have bought some presents," she said. “I still have some things I want to get. It is very hard to go shopping not knowing, but there will be presents under the tree.”

John Skelton is in the Lenawee County jail on parental kidnapping charges. Police said he’s made false claims about turning his sons over to another woman.

The vigil is at 6 p.m. at the Trestle Park band shell.

Tanya Skelton told reporters at Morenci United Methodist Church that she wants her sons home for Christmas, The Daily Telegram and The (Toledo) Blade reported.

She said she was still praying the boys are alive and unharmed, and would return to unwrap their gifts.

“They are...not the typical kids who want the new toy or the latest,” Tanya Skelton said. "They are happy with what they get, so Christmas is always fun because you never know what’s going to be in the present and how they are going to react, but they are always smiling and happy."

"It’s going to be hard if they are not home – very quiet, emotional Christmas.”

At a court hearing last Thursday, John Skelton, 39, said he gave his sons to someone from an “organization” who visited his home on Thanksgiving. He told police earlier he had turned them over to a female acquaintance to be returned to his ex-wife.

Morenci Police Chief Larry Weeks said then that he remained skeptical of the father’s claims, adding, “We’re not expecting a positive outcome.”

Vigil Held For 3 Missing Michigan Brothers
Boys Not Seen Since Thanksgiving

POSTED: 3:15 pm EST December 24, 2010

ADRIAN, Mich. -- A candlelight vigil was held in Adrian for three young Michigan brothers who were last seen on Thanksgiving in the care of their now-jailed father.

Several dozen people braved the cold weather during Thursday evening's gathering at the Trestle Park band shell, about 10 miles north of the boys' hometown of Morenci.

"Christmas is a time of birth, the birth of the savior, so it could be the time that these little boys are born again, brought back to us,” said one person attending the vigil. “That would be the miracle."

Nine-year-old Andrew, 7-year-old Alexander and 5-year-old Tanner have not been seen since Thanksgiving when they were at their father's home in Morenci, a small town on the Michigan-Ohio border.

Police and volunteers have searched on both sides of the state line

John Skelton is in the Lenawee County jail on parental kidnapping charges.

Police said he's made false claims about turning the boys over to another woman.

For 3 little boys still missing, a message of hope and comfort
Article published December 25, 2010

Dear Andrew, Alex and Tanner:

It is Christmas morning and even before the sky began to lighten, you should have been running down the stairs, excited, wide-eyed, still in your pajamas. I know you would have checked the plate to make sure Santa got his cookies when he came by in the wee hours to leave your presents. Would you have left a carrot, too, for Rudolph?

I have two girls, big girls now, but I remember some of those 5 o'clock wake-up calls on Christmas morning. Sometimes my wife and I could get them to crawl into bed with us and delay wiping the sleep from our eyes for another 30 or 40 minutes, but I doubt that would work with eager little boys like the three of you.

Yes, it's a magical morning, the best day of the year whether, as the carol says, you're 1 or 92. But a lot of the magic is missing because you are still missing.

We don't know where you are. We pray you're alive and well and that just maybe there is a tree somewhere with lights and shiny icicles surrounded by presents with your names on them.

It's a good day for prayer and probably a bad day to question it. But so many of us wonder why bad things, be it illness or ill fortune, are allowed to happen to little kids. Still, we trust the Man whose birth we celebrate today to watch over you. With faith comes hope.

So we hope. We pray you are OK and not too scared. The world can be a terrifying place and the three of you have found that out way too soon. You may be frightened, but you are not alone. Not today, of all days.

You guys wouldn't believe how many people are worried about you and how many of your friends and neighbors from Morenci, even total strangers from miles and miles away, spent so many hours looking for you. There were as many as 400, maybe 500 people on some days, wading through hip-high water, walking through fields and woods, alongside highways, at campgrounds, everywhere they could think to look. Those who couldn't do the climbing and walking made sure the volunteers had hot food and coffee to fuel their effort. God bless them all.

A line of searchers along Ranger Highway in Morenci late last month was part of efforts that on some days involved 400 or 500 people wading through hip-high water and trudging through fields and woods and alongside highways.

Tanner may not be old enough to know the word, but you guys all know about volunteering. You were eager to help put the holiday decorations up at Wakefield Park and at your church, Morenci United Methodist. People have been praying for you there and you should have seen all the candles flickering at the park when people gathered to light your way home.

But you're not back yet, and everyone misses you. Your neighbors are all waiting for you to get home and start sledding and building a snowman. When it warms up, they'd love to see you jumping your bikes over ramps in their driveways. A lot of your friends from Morenci Elementary are looking forward to playing and fishing with you this summer.

We're all having trouble trying to figure out your daddy, but we know you miss him and your mommy too. Remember, you can close your eyes and see them anytime you want, and remember the fun you all had and smile.

You guys have to keep taking care of each other. Alex, your teachers talk about how you'd put your arm around Tanner and make sure he got to and from class safely. So I know you're keeping your eye on him. He needs you.

And Andrew, you're the big brother, the serious one, the one who is wise beyond your years. It's a lot to heap on a 9-year-old, but you're in charge, buddy.

We don't know where you are, near or far, and maybe it's silly to think you're seeing this. But it's the season for hope. Andrew, I know you're the best reader, so I've got a tip for you.

The police are the good guys. Firemen, too. If you see one, no matter how scared you might be, walk up to him or her and tell them your name and where you're from. They'll bring you home.

And when you get there, well, is Morenci ever ready for you.

There are yellow bows on the trees, and wait until you see the lights in the park. People who live there say it's a small town with a big heart.

But it's broken-hearted now.

That will change when you get home. It will be Christmas morning all over again.

Love,

Everybody

Father of missing Morenci boys waives preliminary exam

Last Updated: December 27. 2010 2:42PM
Doug Guthrie / The Detroit News

The father of three boys missing since Thanksgiving from their Morenci home waived preliminary examination of parental kidnapping charges and agreed to be bound over for trial in Lenawee County Circuit Court.

John Russell Skelton, 39, who refused to tell a different judge last week the location of Andrew, 9, Alexander, 7, and Tanner Skelton, 5, appeared briefly before Lenawee County District Judge James Sheridan today.

When asked by Sheridan today if he understood he was giving up his right to see and challenge evidence police claim to have against him in a hearing that was set for Tuesday, Skelton answered, "I guess so." The judge repeated the rights Skelton was giving up and the second time the defendant answered, "Yes sir."

Hundreds of volunteers searched for Skelton's sons the week after Thanksgiving. Police had warned the mother, Tanya Skelton, 44, that they feared the boys were dead.

But Skelton, who is being held in the Lenawee County Jail on $30 million bond, told the judge who has overseen his bitter divorce and custody fight that his sons were in the hands of an "organization." He declined to tell Circuit Judge Margaret Noe the name the organization, and claimed he didn't know the name of the woman who took his on Thanksgiving Day.

Skelton appeared in Sheridan's courtroom today with his court-appointed attorney, John Glaser, for nine minutes. Skelton remained seated in a wheelchair, suffering from an ankle injury that he told police he suffered while attempting suicide in his Morenci home the day after Thanksgiving. Skelton was originally arrested in Ohio where he had sought treatment for the injury at a medical facility about 12 miles south of his Michigan/Ohio border town.

Skelton's parents have said they were told by their son that the boys are safe and well-cared-for when they visited him in Toledo's Lucas County Jail. They said he took the children to protect them from their mother. Tanya Skelton is on the Michigan Sex Offender Registry for her 1998 conviction for a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old neighbor boy.

Skelton was ordered to appear Jan. 5 before a Lenawee County Circuit Judge for arraignment on the kidnapping charges.

Meanwhile, the family of Tanya Skelton will gather Thursday for the funeral of her maternal grandmother. Irene Cochrane, 90, died on Christmas Day. Services will be held at the Church of the Nazarene, 751 N. Summit St., Morenci.

Missing Boys' Father Waives Arraignment

By Scott Sarvay January 5, 2011 Jan 5, 2011 at 10:23 AM EST

MORENCI, Michigan (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - John Skelton, the man accused of kidnapping his three young boys, waived his right to an arraignment in Michigan Wednesday morning.

The three boys Tanner, Andrew and Alexander Skelton, all under the age of 10, have been missing since Thanksgiving 2010.

He's maintained he passed the boys off to an "organization."

The boys' mother, Tanya Skelton, believes her sons are still alive despite overwhelming fears that they might be dead.

Skelton is being held on a $30 million bond.

Missing Morenci Boys' Aunt Calls John Skelton Coward

Updated: Friday, 07 Jan 2011, 9:19 PM EST

MORENCI, Mich. (WJBK) - 19-year-old Courtney Derby, like her mother, Tanya Skelton, wishes she knew what happened to Andrew, Alexander and Tanner.

The boys' sister spoke only with FOX 2.

"The I love yous and the screaming coming out the door. You forgot to give me a kiss. You forgot to hug me. Even snow, rain … the middle one and the youngest always running out the door. No shoes on, mom's yelling get inside, you're going to get sick. They didn't care. They wanted a kiss from their sister. I mean, that's what I miss," said Derby.

The whole family missed Christmas with the boys. It is on hold for now. Just ask the boys' aunt, Tennille, who said there are gifts that will not be unwrapped until they come home.

She had the following to say to John Skelton, the boys' father.

"Quit being a coward because no man would have done what he has done. Don't be a coward. Tell someone," said Tennille McCain.

The boys' mother said she and John never even spanked the boys, so she does not believe he has it in him to hurt them.

She has heard of the sightings, people in Ohio saying they saw all three of the boys. Her impression is that they may not all be together when they are out.

"Whoever has the children may only be taking them out one at a time because they know it's the three missing brothers, the three missing boys, pictures are distributed in threes," said Tanya Skelton. "Don't look at it as a group of three boys, but as them individual."

"I haven't changed my perception of it, but I'm just saying that I'm not willing to close the door on any hope that they're potentially out there," said Morenci Police Chief Larry Weeks.

"Go anywhere, I mean just grab someone of the street. Tell them who you are. Tell them you want to come home to your family," Derby said.

Police Chief Weeks said he does continue to hold out hope that there is a chance that the boys still may be alive.

So far, they have received a thousand tips. If you have any information about these boys' whereabouts, you are asked to call police.

Mother of Three Missing Michigan Boys Holds Hope They're Alive

By Howard Breuer  Monday January 24, 2011 07:15 PM EST

Posted Image

Nearly two months after three Morenci, Mich., brothers disappeared, the children's mother holds hope they'll be found safe.

"In my heart, I feel that they are still alive, and I just am waiting for the right clue or tip to come in, or for their father to finally decide to tell who he gave the children to," Tanya Skelton, 44, says in an interview with PEOPLE.

The boys' dad, John Skelton, 39, told police several accounts about what he did with 5-year-old Tanner, 7-year-old Alexander and 9-year-old Andrew the day after Thanksgiving.

He said he gave them to a pastor's wife named Joann Taylor because he was going to commit suicide. Then he said he gave them to an "organization."

Then he got a lawyer and stopped talking.

After investigating various leads, Morenci Police Chief Larry Weeks on Nov. 30 announced that police "do not expect a positive outcome here." More than a month later, Weeks tells PEOPLE his expectation "remains the same, and we're certainly skeptical about any stories or information that (the father) puts out there."

Mother Traumatized

Tanya says that after the boys disappeared that "my blood pressure went through the roof" and she spent two days sedated in the hospital.

"When I finally came back to the world, it wasn't with thoughts that they were gone but that they are alive and I need to find them," she says.

But she clings the belief her estranged husband didn't harm her children. She says the John Skelton she lived with for 10 years would cook, play games and wrestle with his kids the second he came home from his truck driving job, and sometimes he'd bring one or two of his sons on a delivery.

She adds Skelton is a nonviolent man who doesn't even like to argue. He never so much as hit the boys, she says, and she can't imagine he'd do worse.

"If I'd want an argument, he'd say calmly, 'We're done,' and then we'd work things out," she says.

She thinks that Skelton isn't talking because he's protecting whomever has the boys; that person, she adds, is being careful not to let the boys be seen together because police are looking for three brothers.

"They're going to bring them out one at a time," she says.

Skelton is in custody on charges of kidnapping and of contempt of court for withholding information on the boys' whereabouts. He could get up to three years on the kidnapping, and can be held indefinitely on the latter charge.

His attorney, John Glaser, says his client doesn't have any comment for the media.

Odd Behavior

Tanya Skelton says John started acting strangely last September, after he took the boys out of school for a trip to Florida, saying he hoped to relocate there. She says little Tanner hid behind her as she tried to stop Skelton from leaving, and she had to go to court in Florida to compel him to return to Michigan with Alexander and Andrew.

She says she then filed for divorce only to secure primary custody and block John from moving the boys out of the area, and that she then went into counseling with him with hopes of keeping the family together.

"I wanted it to work," she says. "I wanted that happy family of five again."

Tanya says she agreed to let John have the boys for Thanksgiving never imagining they wouldn't be returned.

"The deeper and longer it goes," she says, her voice breaking, "the more I realize this isn't the man I fell in love with."

"I should be tucking my boys into bed and reading them stories, and not lying awake at night thinking about what happened," she says. "It's so hard that we're coming up on two months and nobody is coming forward. It's hard – and it hurts."

Search for missing Morenci boys shifts, police say

By Gina Damron  Free Press Staff Writer  January 31, 2011

A news conference is planned for Tuesday afternoon in Morenci regarding three young brothers, who went missing in November.

The Morenci Police Department plans to update the status of the investigation and “a shift in the investigative focus,” according to the release.

Andrew, Alexander and Tanner Skelton — ages 9, 7 and 5 — have been missing since Thanksgiving, when the two older brothers were last seen in the backyard of their father’s home. John Skelton, their father, has been charged with parental kidnapping.

John Skelton has said he gave his sons to an organization, but has not released the name. Skelton, police have said, attempted suicide in his home the day after Thanksgiving.

Morenci Police Chief Larry Weeks could not immediately be reached for comment today.

A spokeswoman for the family is also expected to speak.

Morenci Mayor Keith Pennington said he’ll speak at the news conference about the reward fund set up for information that leads to the safe recovery, return and information leading to prosecution of those responsible.

He told the Free Press today that, as of the weekend, there was $23,000 available in the fund. Pennington said he doesn’t believe the fund has been accessed yet.

Missing Boys Case Is Now Homicide Investigation, Police Say

Feb 1, 2011 – 7:55 PM
AOL News

The investigation into the disappearance of three young Michigan brothers has turned into a homicide investigation, and the main suspect is the boys' father, police said today.

"From this point forward, this is no longer a missing-person case, but a murder investigation," Morenci Police Chief Larry Weeks told a news conference today, according to the Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press. Morenci is about 75 miles southwest of Detroit.

He said authorities wanted to prevent "false hope growing in the community" that the boys were still alive.

The Skelton brothers -- Tanner, 5, Alexander, 7, and Andrew, 9 -- have been missing since Thanksgiving Day.Andrew, 9, Alexander, 7, and Tanner Skelton, 5, have been missing since Thanksgiving Day. The boys' father, John Skelton, 39, was involved in a custody fight with their mother, who had filed for divorce, but he had the boys for the holiday.

The day after Thanksgiving, Skelton, an unemployed truck driver, showed up at a hospital after what he said was a failed suicide attempt.

Skelton initially told police that he had turned his sons over to a woman named Joann Taylor because he did not want them to see him kill himself. Police said they were unable to find anyone by that name and they believed Skelton was lying.

He later told investigators that he had given the boys to an underground child protection group called the United Foster Outreach and Underground Sanctuary, police said. Weeks said no such group exists.

"I have enormous resources and no such organization can be located," Weeks said, according to the Detroit News.

Skelton has been charged with three counts of parental kidnapping and is being held on $30 million bond.

Weeks indicated today that more charges are likely.

"I'm sure that when the time is appropriate ... charges will be requested," the police chief told reporters.

Extensive searches by police and hundreds of volunteers have failed to turn up any sign of the boys. Their mother, Tanya Skelton, was informed Jan. 20 that the case was being considered a homicide probe, said family spokeswoman Kathye Herrera.

Herrera read a statement from the family at the news conference.

"Days are long and nights are longer," she said. "Emotions are running the gamut from utter despair to the peaceful feeling that knowing the boys are in a better place."

Father of Missing Morenci Boys Speaks Out

Posted: Feb 03, 2011 3:16 PM EST

The father of three young boys who went missing last November spoke to the media this week. The boys went missing from Lenawee county's town of Morenci. Their father, John Skelton, was the last one to see them alive.

Tuesday, Skelton spoke out from the Lenawee County jail, just as the chief of police in Morenci announced the case had changed to a murder investigation. The father says he gave his sons Andrew, 9, Alexander, 7, and Tanner, 5, to a group called "Underground Sanctuary."

During the interview, Skelton was asked why he thinks that officials believe he killed the boys.

"There is nobody to collaborate seeing them. There's no pictures of these people. We covered our tracks really well," said John Skelton, father.

Skelton says he gave the kids to this mysterious group because he feared his wife, Tanya Skelton, was abusing them. Police have cleared Tanya of any wrongdoing.

He said he agreed to give the boys up to the group for just one night, Thanksgiving night. He said it was supposed to be a "trial run" but he never saw his boys or the people from the group again.

Skelton is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday morning. He is charged with parental kidnapping in the disappearance. The boys were last seen at Skelton's home in Morenci, located along the Michigan-Ohio state line.

Judge adjourns hearing in case of 3 missing boys

Feb 10, 2011  |  By GINA DAMRON  Detroit Free Press Staff Writer

A pretrial hearing for the Morenci man accused in the disappearance of his three sons was adjourned Wednesday until Feb. 23.

John Skelton appeared in Lenawee County Circuit Court in Adrian. He is charged with three counts of parental kidnapping in the disappearance of Andrew, Alexander and Tanner Skelton, ages 9, 7 and 5.

Judge Margaret M.S. Noe granted the request by Skelton's attorney, John Glaser. Prosecutor Jonathan Poer agreed to it. Both declined to say why an adjournment was requested.

Last week, Morenci Police Chief Larry Weeks announced that the search was being handled as a homicide investigation. Skelton has not been charged with murder.

"This is no longer a missing persons' case," Weeks said Feb. 1. "I'm sure that when the time is appropriate ... charges will be requested."

Skelton's sons disappeared after staying with him during Thanksgiving; he had said they were with an organization.

Last week, Weeks said Skelton told police his sons are with the United Foster Outreach and Underground Sanctuaries. Weeks said investigators have been unable to locate the organization.

The Skelton Brothers: Nancy Grace America’s Missing

February 9, 2011 Posted: 03:39 PM ET

Tanner, 5, Alexander, 7, & Andrew, 9 mysteriously vanish Thanksgiving day. The young boys were with their father, John Skelton, and were supposed to return to their mother after a scheduled visit, but never did.

The boys’ father allegedly first told police he gave the children to a woman because he planned to hang himself and didn’t want the boys to witness the suicide. His suicide attempt failed and Skelton was placed in the hospital for a mental evaluation. After a massive search across state lines for the 3 missing boys, police declared the father’s story about a woman was a lie, and investigators now say the case has turned into a homicide investigation.

According to police, since the boys vanished, their father’s story has changed several times. John Skelton, now charged with 3 counts of parental kidnapping, says now that he would never hurt his children. His latest story is that he put his 3 children in hiding, giving them to a secret organization in order to keep them safe.

With the missing boys’ father’s story allegedly changing constantly and massive search efforts turning up empty, we still don’t know the location of the missing boys. Please help us find Tanner, 5, Alexander, 7, & Andrew, 9 Skelton.

DETROIT -- The Morenci, Michigan man whose three young sons have been missing since Thanksgiving still maintains the boys are in the custody of members of an underground sanctuary group.

John Skelton talked about the boys and the case in a series of interviews with the Detroit Free Press at the Lenawee County jail. Skelton insisted he didn't know the whereabouts of 9-year-old Andrew, 7-year-old Alexander and 5-year-old Tanner and won't until he's released.

Skelton says he wouldn't hurt his sons and only has the first names of the people who took them.

"Hey, you guys," a team leader yelled to the group of volunteers making their way through the woods, "tighten up that line."

Missing Mich. boys' dad gets plea deal

By Casey Glynn July 29, 2011 11:57 AM

(CBS/WTOL/AP) - A Michigan father who was charged with kidnapping after the disappearance of his three sons has received a plea deal that downgrades his charges.

John Skelton pleaded no contest Thursday in an Adrian, Mi. court to a charge of unlawful imprisonment.

In exchange, prosecutors dropped a charge of parental kidnapping in the Thanksgiving 2010 disappearance of 9-year-old Andrew, 7-year-old Alexander and 5-year-od Tanner Skelton.

Had Skelton been convicted of kidnapping, he faced a possible sentence of life in prison, reports CBS affiliate WTOL. With the lesser imprisonment charges the Michigan man only faces up to 15 years in prison.

According to WTOL, residents in the Skelton's Southern Michigan home of Morenci feel he is getting off too easy.

DETROIT (AP) — Several General Motors employees taking part in a popular road rally competition plan to post photos across the South of three young Michigan brothers missing since Thanksgiving.

Two teams from the Detroit-based automaker expect to hand out fliers of Andrew, Alexander and Tanner Skelton in about 15 cities over the next eight days during the Fireball Run Adventurally, according to WJBK-TV (http://bit.ly/oSvvmr).

The boys were 9, 7 and 5 at the time of their disappearance from their father's home in Morenci, about 70 miles southwest of Detroit. Police have said they do not believe the father's claim that he gave the boys to an organization and are treating the case as a homicide investigation.

Morenci keeps hopes alive

Last Updated: November 23. 2011 1:00AM
Doug Guthrie/ The Detroit News

Morenci — Tanya Zuvers refuses to speak of her three missing sons in the past tense.

In the year since the Thanksgiving disappearance of Andrew, Alexander and Tanner Skelton, hundreds of volunteers launched a futile search of this Michigan-Ohio border town and its vast surrounding farms, woods and waters.

Ten months later, their father, John Skelton, was sentenced to 10-15 years in prison after pleading no contest to unlawful imprisonment and steadfastly refusing to tell of their whereabouts.

Skelton said he gave his sons to a secret child-protection group, dreamed of them dead and did Internet research about neck-breaking.
