DETROIT (WJBK) -- Andy Arena became the special agent in charge at the FBI in Detroit in 2007. He was back home where he grew up and ready to take on crime in the Motor City.

However, who could have guessed the kind of cases his office would encounter from an attempted terrorist attack on Christmas Day to the killing of an imam in Dearborn to the search for missing children to the public corruption cases making national headlines.

[Excerpt..]

The arrest of the Hutaree militia members, the explosion of health care fraud with more than 160 people indicted in the past year alone, and then there are the missing children -- Tangena Hussain, the three Skelton brothers missing from Morenci, Bianca Jones -- all unsolved.

Missing Toledo boy

By: Alexis Means

18 years ago Toledo's Jamel Williams went missing.  Police say he was taken from his East Toledo home.

"From this day I always wonder what happened to him where is he does he remember me?" said The boys mother Kelly Thomas

It's hard for Jamel Williams mother to talk about her son.  She says the day her son disappeared plays over and over in her head.

[Excerpt]

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children hopes you will continue to help look for Jamel and for the Morenci boys.  Andrew, Alexander, and Tanner Skelton were just 9, 7 and 5 when they disappeared. They were last seen with their father, John Skelton.  Skelton claims he gave the boys to an underground organization to prevent their mother from having custody.

"My heart goes out to them. I really want to find my son. I really want my son to come home and I hope any parent who has a missing child I really hope they can find their child. It's a really horrible thing for a mother to have a son or daughter to die or come up missing. it is really painful." said Thomas

Thomas encourages parents to always keep a recent photo of their children and a close eye on them so they never end up on a milk carton.

"Always watch your children know where they are going know who they are talking to especially with this internet stuff know who they are talking to on the internet because that's really where a lot of bad things happen"

Anyone with information about Jamel Williams you should call the Toledo police department 1-419-245-3129

If you have information about the three Morenci brothers you can call the tip line at 517-458-7104.

John Skelton, the Michigan father whose 3 boys went missing: Whatever happened to ...?

Mark Gillispie, The Plain Dealer
Posted:  07/30/2012 5:55 AM

"Whatever happened to . . .?" is a weekly series updating some of the most newsworthy and interesting local stories covered in The Plain Dealer. Have a suggestion on a story we should update? Send it to John C. Kuehner, or call 216-999-5325.

Today, we answer the question:

Whatever happened to John Skelton, the Michigan father whose three young boys went missing in November 2010?

Skelton remains behind bars in a Michigan prison after pleading no contest to three counts of unlawful imprisonment in September 2011.

His three sons, Andrew, Alexander and Tanner, however, remain missing. Police in Morenci, Mich., long ago gave up hope that the three boys, who were 9, 7 and 5 years old, would be found alive.

The disappearance of the boys on Nov. 25, 2010, triggered a massive search for them in communities skirting the Ohio-Michigan border. Skelton,  who was separated from his wife, was supposed to return the boys to her that day. He instead told his wife that a woman would be dropping off the boys.

Skelton asked a friend to take him to a nearby mental health hospital in Ohio the next day after he tried to hang himself. He also posted a Facebook message asking that God and his wife forgive him.

Tanya Zuvers had filed for divorce from Skelton in September 2010 after he had taken two of the boys out of school and had driven them to Florida to visit his family. He was granted visitation rights and had the boys for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Skelton gave authorities a number of different stories after the boys were reported missing. There were unconfirmed reports that he told the FBI he had killed his sons. He also told authorities he sent the boys away to prevent them from being abused by their mother.

Prosecutors in Lenawee County, Mich., originally charged Skelton with three counts of kidnapping, which carry a potential sentence of life in prison. He could still face murder charges should evidence be found linking him to the boys' deaths.

Morenci Police Chief Larry Joe Weeks says his department continues to work on the case on an almost daily basis.

"But there's been no significant break in the case, unfortunately," he said.

Based on cellular phone traffic, Weeks believes that the boys" bodies are somewhere within 80 miles of Morenci, which makes the search difficult.

Weeks said the case is bothersome from both a professional and a personal perspective. While there is a crime that needs to be solved, as a parent, he is bothered by the fact that no closure has been brought to the boys" mother and family.

"They're both equally as frustrating," Weeks said. "Probably the second more than the first."

Still No Sign Of Missing Morenci Boys

August 20, 2012 5:59 AM

Reporting Mike Campbell

Alexander Skelton, Andrew Skelton, John Skelton, missing Morenci boys, Morenci, Skelton Brothers, Tanner Skelton MORENCI, Mich. (WWJ) – Police in Morenci say they’re still trying to find three young boys from Lenawee County — who haven’t been seen since Thanksgiving Day 2010.

Still missing are 9-year-old Andrew, 7-year-old Alexander and 5-year-old Tanner Skelton. They went missing after a Thanksgiving visit with their father nearly two years ago, and Morenci County Police Chief Larry Weeks says they have not given up looking for the boys, although they’re not actively searching.

“There’s been no organized ground searches on our behalf since, it’s been probably two years, you know, since the incident started,” Weeks told WWJ’s Mike Campbell. “But as far as – you know – have people forgotten about ‘em, absolutely not. The people in our community are very aware of the case and it’s present in their minds, I’m sure, on a daily basis.”

Weeks says they follow leads as they come in, but so far, nothing has turned up.

Their dad, 39-year-old John Skelton, remains in jail. He’s the only suspect in the case. He says he gave the boys to a group, which he refuses to identify.

Missing Morenci boys' relatives cling to hope 2 years later

By Christine Ferretti

November 6, 2012 at 9:00 am

Morenci — Courtney Derby won't be convinced that her three younger brothers are forever gone.

The Skelton boys — Tanner, 7, Alexander, 9, and Andrew, 10 — made national news in 2010 when they vanished from this tiny rural town on Thanksgiving Day while in their father's care.

"People ask me, 'how do you still have hope?' Well, you never lose it," Derby, 21, said in a recent interview with The Detroit News.

"My heart just doesn't tell me they are gone."

Nearly two years later, media coverage of the boys' bizarre disappearance has waned, but the family isn't letting up in their efforts to locate them.

Posters circulate and a privately funded reward is more than $60,000. There are bumper stickers on cars and bracelets on wrists.

The boys' mother, Tanya Zuvers, along with her parents and daughters, manages a self-assembled awareness group and Facebook page, with connections throughout the states and in multiple countries.

"It's every waking moment when I'm not at work," Zuvers said of the search. "We've got to keep that hope out there."

Zuvers on Nov. 25 will host a two-year awareness event at Wakefield Park, the larger of the two parks in the Michigan-Ohio border town of about 2,200.

Last year, three maple trees were donated and planted in honor of the boys and a rock was placed near the center tree. This year, they plan to unveil age progression photographs being made in conjunction with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and add a plaque to the boulder.

If the boys return alive, Zuvers said the rock will be displayed outside the family home. If they are found deceased, it will be their headstone, she said.

Authorities announced last year that the missing persons case turned into a homicide investigation after John Skelton, who first claimed he gave the boys to an organization, gave police multiple conflicting stories.

Skelton is serving a 10-15 year prison term after pleading no contest to unlawful imprisonment. He still refuses to reveal the whereabouts of his sons.

Zuvers' youngest son, Tanner, turned 7 on Oct. 20.

To mark the occasion, some relatives and friends gathered on the Ohio Turnpike to pass out fliers at west and eastbound truck stops near Holiday City. They planned to do it again this month.

"Everybody is looking," said Donald Zuvers, the boys' grandfather.

"We don't know when we will get an answer."

Mother of missing boys hopes to confront ex-husband

6:25PM EST November 24. 2012 - DETROIT -- Tanya Zuvers says she's ready to confront the man suspected in the disappearance of her three sons two years ago — the boys' father.

She said she wants to visit John Skelton in the Upper Peninsula prison where he is serving a 10- to 15-year sentence after pleading no contest last year to unlawful imprisonment in connection with the boys' disappearance.

Zuvers said it would be the first time she has spoken with her ex-husband since their sons went missing from their Morenci home over the Thanksgiving holiday in 2010.

"Where I'm at in my own personal growth, I'm ready to confront some things with him, and I have things I want to say to him," she said.

On Sunday, supporters will gather at Wakefield Park in Morenci to raise awareness and remember Andrew, Alexander and Tanner, who were ages 9, 7 and 5 when they went missing.

Skelton has insisted he doesn't know where his sons are and said they are with members of an underground sanctuary group. Police believe he murdered the boys.

Zuvers has thought about what she'd say to her ex if he accepts her visit. She even has jotted down some notes — but she wants Skelton to be the first to hear it. She said the conversation would mostly focus on their sons.

Maybe she'll get some answers, Zuvers said.

"You know," she said, "there was a time when we were in love, and I don't know what went wrong there."

'Running out of time'

On the one-year anniversary of the boys' disappearance, community members and other supporters filled the bleachers of the city's high school gym. Zuvers pleaded for everyone to keep praying.

"And let's not have to do this in another 365 days," she said at the time.

But the two-year anniversary has come.

"Our hope is that we'll get them home within the year," the boys' grandfather Don Zuvers said Tuesday. "I said last year that they would be home this year, but we're running out of time."

In the past year, efforts have continued to get information about their disappearance.

Members of an awareness group have been passing out fliers at rest areas and truck stops along major roadways, and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children released age-progressed images of the boys.

Seeing her sons older was difficult at first for Tanya Zuvers.

"It was very emotional," she said. "But now it's almost like, when I think of them and maybe what they're doing today, I can almost picture them looking like that."

Despite the new images, the investigative task force still believes Skelton killed his boys and disposed of their bodies.

What records show

During a court hearing in July 2011, after prosecutors struck a plea deal with Skelton, Lenawee County Circuit Judge Margaret M.S. Noe read aloud details from police reports.

Skelton pleaded no contest to charges of unlawful imprisonment, and charges of kidnapping — punishable by up to life in prison — were dismissed.

Noe said Skelton told investigators that he wrapped his sons in blankets, gave them stuffed animals, put them in his van and drove away.

Noe said records show Skelton searched the Internet for information on how to break a neck a week before his sons went missing and reportedly took his sons' winter coats and toothbrushes to his aunt's house and said he didn't need them anymore.

Morenci Police Chief Larry Weeks said investigators believe Skelton disposed of his sons' bodies within 80 miles of Morenci, based on information from cellphone records.

In a statement released Tuesday, police said Skelton's story has been "wrought with inconsistencies."

"His choice to hide behind this outlandish story is selfish and cowardly," Weeks said in the statement. "If he cared about his sons at all, he would disclose the truth and bring resolution to this case."

The next step

Zuvers holds out hope that her sons are alive but said she knows it is possible they were killed.

"But until they can give me 100 percent proof," she said, "I don't have to believe it."

Zuvers said she has gone to counseling, which helped her realize "that there are things that right now in my life I have no control of. I cannot change certain things, so I have to accept that."

She said she has realized she wants to speak to Skelton, who is being housed in a prison in Munising. If he won't visit with her, Zuvers said she will write him a letter.

In the past year, Zuvers said, she has learned that she has to move on with life.

"You've got to keep living, you can't not be a part of life and you've got to go on," she said. "And that was a hard thing to come to that it was OK to keep living life."

Press Release provided by the family:

Breaking News: Steve Bridgmon of Firm Foundation to unveil Song about Skelton Boys

Firm Foundation will unveil a brand new song penned by lead singer Steve Bridgmon called "Where You Are" inspired by the three young men from Ohio who disappeared just two years ago this past Thanksgiving weekend. The Skelton children have recently gained national attention and time has become vital in finding their whereabouts. Steve Bridgmon says, “I wanted to do something to bring awareness to this family and let other people be aware of them missing, I just didn't feel like enough had been done on the national level. My heart goes out to them and we will not stop until they are found and the truth is uncovered." The song will be performed for the first time during their concert at Living Hope in West Unity, Ohio on December 30th. The group will immediately go into the studio and record a studio version of the song in January. Steve recently sat down and started writing words he felt needed to bring comfort to this family.

"We would like to dedicate our December 30th concert to the Skelton boys and want our connection to a national audience to bring awareness of their disappearance." - Steve Bridgmon

For more information on Firm Foundation visit www.firmfoundationquartet.com or visit them on Facebook at Firm Foundation Quartet

Living Hope will be adding a second concert on December 30 because of the national release of “Where Are You”, which was inspired by the disappearance of Andrew, Alexander and Tanner Skelton over two years ago.

The first concert will be the third annual New Year’s concert at 6:30 pm starring 2010’s “Gospel Group of the Year” Firm Foundation. The second at 8:30 will be held in honor of the Skelton boys and will feature the family along with Firm Foundation. Both concerts will be springboards for the song which was written by lead singer Steve Bridgmon and will be released nationally after the concert.

People can attend one or both concerts. However, due to limited seating a free ticket is required for entry to the first concert. The second does not require a ticket.

A free will offering will be taken up at the end of both of these concerts

Jailed man charged with lying in missing boys case
Posted: Sep 01, 2013 3:37 PM EDT
Updated: Sep 01, 2013 3:37 PM EDT

ADRIAN, Mich. (AP) - Southern Michigan authorities have filed charges against a jail inmate they say lied when he told police he knew the whereabouts of 3 young boys who disappeared three years ago.

Police say they think the boys are dead.

9-year-old Andrew, 7-year-old Alexander and 5-year-old Tanner Skelton were last seen at their father's home in Morenci in 2010. They were to be returned to their mother, and the disappearance sparked a large search.

John Skelton says he didn't harm his sons. He's serving 10-15 years for unlawful imprisonment.

Fifty-year-old Robert J. Jamison of Adrian was arraigned Friday in Lenawee County District Court on a charge of lying to police.

Police tell the Daily Telegram he made up a detailed story about what happened to the boys and wasted investigators' time.

3 years later, mother of missing Skelton boys remains hopeful

MORENCI, Mich. - It's hard to believe it will be three years this Thanksgiving since the Skelton brothers went missing from Morenci. That day, Andrew, Alexander and Tanner Skelton vanished without a trace.

As their father sits in prison refusing to say what he's done with them, there's now been a shift in the case with Michigan State Police steeping in and taking over the investigation.

The boys' mother, Tanya Zuvers, has come a long way in three years. She's vowing not to let what her ex-husband has done force her to the bottom of a bottle, or worse. She has hope and wants you to as well.

The boys' father, John Skelton, angry at his soon-to-be ex-wife, took the children and is refusing to say what he's done with them, telling police all sorts of stories.

"As a mom, I haven't given up yet -- feel like they're gone," said Zuvers.

Zuvers had filed for divorce right before Skelton took the boys. To this day, she has a hard time believing he'd harm them. Skelton, who is currently in prison serving 13 to 15 years in connection with the disappearance of the children, has refused to see Zuvers' face to face, but he has emailed her twice.

"It was accusing me, no mention of Andrew, Alex or Tanner," Zuvers said.

The second one came on Mother's Day this year.

"He wrote me a second email -- Happy Mother's Day," said Zuvers.

The incongruity of being wished Happy Mother's Day by him is something Zuvers just deals with, just like the shift in the investigation.

Now, the Michigan State Police is the lead in her children's disappearance. Detectives continue to call her with possible info or evidence they need her to look at. She's convinced one day she'll finally know the truth of what happened.

"I am strong. This just one more hurdle," said Zuvers.

On Zuvers' wall at home she has faith, hope and love stenciled on the wall. She told Local 4 it's that mantra that keeps her going.

Mom of three missing boys says she knows they may be dead

Dec. 26, 2013 at 10:50 AM

MORENCI, Mich., Dec. 26 (UPI) -- A Michigan woman whose three sons were last seen in 2010 at their father's house says she knows there is a good chance the boys are dead.

Tanya Zuvers' ex-husband, John Skelton, is serving a prison term for kidnapping and has refused to say where the boys are or if they are alive, the Detroit News reported.

"As their mom, I still have that hope that they're still alive, but I know the reality is it's very possible they're not," she told the newspaper. "We're still looking for the clues, but my reality is there's a very good possibility my sons are no longer alive on this Earth. It took me a long time to come to that realization."

Zuvers, 47, lives in Morenci, a small town about 75 miles southwest of Detroit and just north of the Ohio line. She reported her sons missing when Skelton, 42, failed to return them in November 2010.

If they are still alive, Andrew is 12, Alexander 10 and Tanner 8.

Skelton, who had previously taken the boys to Florida without permission, told police they were with a couple he had met via the Internet. He later claimed they were with an underground network of child-protection activists.

Investigators discovered Skelton had traveled to Holiday City, Ohio, about 25 miles from Morenci, on the day after Thanksgiving in 2010. They also found he had done searches on line for information on how to break necks.

Skelton pleaded no contest to kidnapping charges and was sentenced to 10 to 15 years. Zuvers said she occasionally emails him, asking him to reveal what he did with his sons but has yet to hear back.

Help Find Missing Persons - Thanksgiving Edition

This month's edition honors those missing close to Thanksgiving time. As families across the nation sit down together to give thanks, in other homes there is an empty place at the table and unique heartbreak that can only go away with answers, and hopefully, a positive resolution. We also recognize that many of our trucking families are not together, but we give thanks they are on the road, bringing needed goods for all of us.

As we grow ever closer to the end of the year, please consider Project Jason and the families of the missing in your charitable donation giving plan. If you feel so moved, please visit Project Jason.

Missing Person Campaign Information - November 2014

The November 2014 campaign poster, featured below, identifies just a few of the many, many individuals gone missing.  We know you are rushed during this and every holiday season, but we ask that you take a moment to view these faces. If you are willing, take a moment of your time to print and post a few campaign posters along your truck route. Anything you can do to reunite one of these, or any of the missing persons featured on past campaign posters is most appreciated. We thank you for your time to help!

Mom of Missing Michigan Boys Now Believes They Are Dead

Posted: Mon 4:10 PM, May 11, 2015

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) -- The mother of three Michigan boys missing since Thanksgiving 2010 says she now believes they are no longer alive.

Tanya Zuvers says she's hanging on to a sliver of hope but she's almost certain they're dead.

They were last seen at their father's home in Morenci near the Michigan-Ohio border. Tanner Skelton was 5, and his brothers Alexander and Andrew were 7 and 9, respectively.

John Skelton is serving 10 to 15 years in prison after pleading no contest to unlawful imprisonment. He maintains he didn't harm his children.

The boys' disappearance led to a large search in Ohio and Michigan. Investigators say they're still following up on new tips.

Zuvers tells The Blade newspaper in Toledo, Ohio, that she knows she'll be reunited with her boys in heaven.

Where Are The Skelton Brothers? Mom Remains Hopeful 5 Years After 3 Sons Disappeared

November 19, 2015 5:47 AM

MORENCI, Mich. (WWJ/AP) – The mother of three young boys who went missing over the Thanksgiving holiday in 2010 near the Michigan-Ohio border hopes the five-year anniversary of their disappearance will bring answers.

A candlelight ceremony for Andrew, Alexander and Tanner Skelton will be held Nov. 26 in Morenci, Michigan, at a park where the boys used to play. They would be 14, 12 and 10, respectively, as of next week.

The boys were in the care of their father when they went missing — the day after Thanksgiving in 2010.

Their mother, Tanya Zuvers, told the Detroit Free Press that she hopes the boys’ father, John Skelton, will “be overcome with the sudden urge to start talking” about their disappearance.

“The past five years I have been to hell and am on my way back, but won’t be completely there until I have answers,” she said.

Skelton, 43, is serving a 10- to 15-year sentence at the Bellamy Creek Correctional Facility in Ionia after pleading no contest in 2012 to three counts of unlawful imprisonment in connection with the boys’ disappearance. He has previously claimed that he didn’t harm his sons but instead turned them over to an underground safety organization.

Anyone with information about this case is urged to contact Michigan State Police at 855-642-4847.
