Rundberg Community Walks For 'Night Without Crime'

(CBS 42) AUSTIN Rundberg Lane was shut down Friday while neighbors took to the streets for a 'Night Without Crime.'

Hundreds pounded the pavement, marching through the North Austin neighborhood -- a neighborhood that has been plagued by prostitution and violence.

Dozens of police, including new Chief Art Acevedo, were on hand.

Acevedo is pledging to change the way police are working to clean up crime on Rundberg, and neighbors say it's about time.

Vangi Munoz wanted to teach her little girl a lesson.

"A couple of weeks ago my daughter was crying, and she said she wanted to move because of the prostitutes and the drug addicts," Munoz told CBS 42's Rebecca Taylor. "And i talked to her, and I said, 'We don't run.'"

Instead, they walked -- with all the others -- some with signs calling for more cops in an area that's seen its share of crime.

A 62-year-old was gunned down behind the Valero convenience store on East Rundberg, where, just this summer, an 18-year old was shot dead in the parking lot.

Detectives still trying to find out what happened to a woman they say walked the streets in the area -- until she turned up dead in a ditch last summer.

And 18-year-old Roxanne Paltauf, who was last seen at a Rundberg motel one year ago, is still missing. And her mother is still searching.

"I can't stop," she says. "She's my daughter, and I've got to continue finding her no matter what."

The police chief pledging change. Chief Acevedo says he's not necessarily looking at putting more cops on patrol. He wants to analyze the numbers and see exactly where the crime is concentrated.

Residents March To Save Rundberg Lane From Crime

Aug 6, 2007

Rundberg Lane is one of Austin's most violent neighborhoods, where police make hundreds of drug, prostitution and robbery arrests every year.

On Friday evening more than 100 people marched down Rundberg, a street most wouldn't dare walk down at night.

Their message was simple: The people who live there vowed to take back their streets.

Neighbors said they'll no longer stand back while their streets are overrun with criminals.

"We are sick and tired of it," said Larry Hardison of the North Austin Coalition of Neighborhoods. "Sick and tired of seeing this on our streets."

Hardison organized Friday's Night Without Crime On Rundberg Lane march.

The coalition represents more than 70,000 residents.

"Why should I feel like I can't go somewhere or feel safe in my community?" said Hardison. "My friends tell me all the time, 'Why don't you move? That place is dangerous.' Why should I have to move? I live here. They need to get out."

Last summer 18-year-old Roxanne Paltauf disappeared from a Rundberg-area motel.

"We're still missing a daughter," said Elizabeth Harris.

Paltauf was last seen with her boyfriend, but no one has seen or heard from her since.

"I believe in the same thing they're doing, trying to save our community," said Harris. "Let our children go out and play without worrying about something going on or being with the wrong people."

The Harris family said it could happen to someone else's child.

"She was only four miles away from the house," said Harris. "I have nothing else better to do with my time than look for my daughter, and I'm not going to stop."

In just four days last week, there were more than 15 violent crimes and drug calls on Rundberg.

"We want a quaint little community where you can feel safe, where the beauty of Rundberg can come back alive," said Hardison.

A man was murdered on Rundberg Saturday night, just one day after the march.

Hello All,

Here's another update on Roxanne Paltauf Missing since 7-7-06.

I received a email from a student at UT on Friday.

Below is some of what he wrote:

Dear Ms. Harris,

I am a graduate film student at the University of Texas at Austin.
With your participation, we could make a short documentary about your missing daughter.  My highest hope is that it would lead to the safe recovery of your daughter.

Well, I met with him, Andy, a nice young man.

We went over details on how this would be done and we , our family, have agreed to do this.He has 3 months to complete it. It is a class assignment. In the end it will be a short 10 minute documentary about our Roxanne; the who, what ,when, why, and how on the disappearance.

Who knows what this could lead to.........hopefully answers.

I believe whole heartedly that God bring people and situations in our lives to helps get through difficult time, and now he has sent another blessing our way, another chance to keep the light shinning on Roxanne, who is  the shinning light u in our hearts.

There's not a second of the day that she is not on my mind, in my thought, and in my prayers.

I also want to say thank you all of you who continue to pray for Roxanne, and your sweet comments regarding her.

I know sometimes I don't respond back, but I do read them all, IT's just hard at times.

It's hard not knowing the next step I should take to find her, but here we go again on a new mission.

Thanks everyone and God Bless,
Elizabeth Harris and family

Residents march to rid North Austin neighborhood of crime
Some businesses near Rundberg Lane attract drugs, prostitution, neighbors say

By Katie Humphrey
AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF

Sunday, December 02, 2007

North Austin residents on a crusade to clean up their crime-ridden neighborhoods took to the streets again Saturday to draw attention to businesses that they say cater to criminals and ignore efforts to improve safety.

More than 50 people gathered on the sidewalk outside motels and a gas station near Interstate 35 and Rundberg Lane, where they say prostitutes, drug dealers and other criminals take advantage of hourly rates and lax loitering policies.

"They have been a nuisance to the neighboring residents and businesses that are trying to have a decent quality of life in the neighborhood," said Anthony Williams, president of the North Austin Coalition of Neighborhoods, which organized Saturday's march along Rundberg from North Lamar Boulevard.

But the hotels' owners and managers and a clerk at the Chevron gas station said they do not offer hourly rates or knowingly allow criminals on their properties.

They acknowledged that crime is a problem on nearby streets but said they too want to see the area cleaned up.

"We are completely clean here," said Peter Patel, manager of the Economy Inn at 700 Middle Lane. "We are working with the neighborhood."

Budget Lodge owner Larry Hall said he has improved the hotel at 9220 North I-35, next to the Chevron, since purchasing it in 2003.

He said he keeps computerized records of everyone who stays there and does not rent rooms by the hour.

The answer to the problem is increased enforcement by police, he said.

"Stop the drugs, arrest the druggies, and then both prostitution and burglary will all be reduced," Hall said.

Police officers from the North Central Command who escorted the protesters said that prostitutes and drug dealers frequent the motels at I-35 and Rundberg Lane and that some of them jump over back fences when police arrive.

Residents' determination to clean up the neighborhood is helpful, said officer Lawrence Davis, who grew up in the neighborhood.

"It encourages people to get to know one another," Davis said. "They want to keep everything on the map."

A similar protest organized by the coalition on Aug. 3 drew more than 400 people. In March, a barbecue in front of a house known for frequent drug deals drew more than 100 people.

The coalition has written to the city manager and theTravis County district attorney, asking for additional help fighting crime in the area.

Robberies, drugs and prostitution persist, despite police and community efforts.

At least three people have been killed in the neighborhood in the past two years.

In separate incidents during that period, two women disappeared from I-35 and Rundberg, and one was found slain.

Relatives of the woman who is still missing, Roxanne Paltauf, marched in Saturday's protest.

Her family said she disappeared after arguing with her boyfriend outside the Budget Inn at 9106 North I-35 on July 8, 2006.

"These people want their neighborhood back, to be safe, and I want my daughter," Paltauf's mother, Elizabeth Harris said. "(The hotels) do cater to what is going on. You can just see all the drug dealers and prostitutes going up and down the road."

Missing But Not Forgotten: The Roxanne Paltauf Story

By David Lohr

January 1, 2008

Austin, TX (320Sycamore.com) Eighteen months is a long time to keep a vigil. Two Thanksgivings, two Christmases and soon-to-be two birthdays have passed since the disappearance of Roxanne Paltauf. Nonetheless, her family is not yet ready to give up hope and they continue to pray for the answers they so desperately seek.

"Roxanne has been missing for almost 18 months now," Roxanne's mother, Elizabeth Harris, recently said in an interview with 320Sycamore.com. "My family and I are still searching for her. We have no idea what happened to her. She has not come up on the radar at all."

Roxanne was an attractive, vibrant 18-year-old who was finishing her G.E.D. in hopes of pursuing a career in fashion design. She was extremely devoted to her family, and her mother was at the center of her life. They seldom argued, but when they did, it generally had to do with Louis Walls, Roxanne's on-again/off-again boyfriend. Elizabeth did not approve of their relationship, and he was not allowed to come to her house. As a result, the couple decided to celebrate their two-year anniversary at a Budget Inn hotel along I-35, on July 7, 2006.

At about 8:30 p.m. the couple began arguing about the "past" and Roxanne stormed out with just the clothes on her back and her identification, leaving her cell phone and other possessions behind. Walls initially followed her but allegedly backed off when she told him to leave her alone. According to his own account, he went back to the hotel room to "cool off." He waited about 20 minutes and then went to look for Roxanne again, but was unable to locate her. Family members would later say it was strange for Roxanne to leave without her cell phone because she seldom went anywhere without it.

The following day Walls called Elizabeth to ask if she knew where Roxanne was. The conversation was short, and he provided few details about his last contact with Roxanne. Concerned for her daughter's safety, Elizabeth filed a missing person report with the Austin Police Department.

When Walls later returned Roxanne's clothes, Elizabeth and her other daughters did not recognize the garments as anything Roxanne owned. For reasons unknown, Walls kept Roxanne's cell phone until July 12. Call records indicate over 300 calls had been placed from the phone during the preceding three days. Twenty-two of those calls ranged from one minute to forty-nine minutes and were traced to an ex-girlfriend of Walls who lives in New Mexico. However, the woman was less than cooperative when asked what the two had discussed on the phone, and none of the other numbers resulted in any useful leads.

Elizabeth Harris was dismayed by the initial missing person investigation launched by the police department. She said she was made to feel as though it was an imposition on the investigating officer. She also felt they overlooked possible clues in the hotel room, as they failed to check the room for traces of blood or other DNA evidence. In addition, the police department was uncooperative with a private investigative service the family had hired to help dig up any leads.

As July 2006 came to an end, a heartbreaking announcement by police found the family holding their breath. The body of what appeared to be a young woman, about Roxanne's age, was found in southeast Austin. However, dental records later revealed that it was not Roxanne. The family let out a sigh of relief, but still had no answers.

Dismayed by the lack of investigative leads in the case, Elizabeth has taken it upon herself to do all she can to determine what happened to her beloved daughter. She has walked the streets around the hotel, passing out flyers and posting signs, and has continued to seek help from local and national media outlets to tell her daughter's story, in hopes someone might come forward with information. Elizabeth has also taken advantage of all the Internet has to offer in getting the word out.

"We have put her picture and info up on all the missing persons websites," Elizabeth said. "We are still hanging flyers of her in the area she came up missing from and any other places that we can. Roxanne also has a billboard that Reagan Advertisement donated. They even move it around town to different locations, so that more people will see it.

"We were just there under her billboard at Christmas. We hung a red ribbon with bows, a stocking with a candy cane, and a card for her that we all signed.

We stood in a circle and prayed to God and we cried. She is so missed in our lives that it is heartbreaking."

There is also an upcoming documentary about Roxanne's disappearance and her family's efforts to find her. Elizabeth readily agreed to the project, in hopes of finding some answers.

"It's about 10 minutes long," Elizabeth said. "We were able to view it about two weeks ago. I will be getting a copy soon, so I will be able to share it with everyone."

According to Elizabeth, a new investigator was assigned to Roxanne's case after the television show, America's Most Wanted, recently brought national attention to the search. Police received a few tips that Roxanne may have been spotted near the hotel shortly after her disappearance, but they have been unable to verify them. While Elizabeth hints at the fact that Roxanne's boyfriend was allegedly violent to her daughter in the past, police have yet to find any evidence connecting him to Roxanne's disappearance.

In the mean time, Elizabeth will keep her daughter's story going, in hopes that someday she will get a break and finally have the answers she seeks.

"Our family still can't believe this is really happening, so surreal," Elizabeth said. "We have no answers. Is she alive? Has something bad happened to her? What exactly happened in those moments that she vanished? Is the whole truth being told? We know nothing and that's the hardest part. What can I do to find her or what happened to her? What have I not done to find her? Am I missing something? It's been very hard to try to cope or understand what has happened. Your life just stops. Time goes forward but I feel I am standing still. I knew from the moment I had found out she was missing; my joy was gone. And as a mother, not being able to help your child is unbearable, but I have to stay strong for her brother and sisters."

Roxanne Paltauf

The family of a missing Austin woman gathered Thursday night on her 20th birthday.

Roxanne Paltauf was last seen in July 2006 at a north Austin motel.  Her boyfriend says she walked away after the two had an argument, but no one has seen her since.

Family members gathered at a billboard along Airport Boulevard and FM 2222.

"Without her being here, that's the only way we know how to honor her," said Roxanne's stepfather, Patrick Doyle.

The Missing -- A Weekly Exposé of Lost Souls -- Issue #3

The Criminal Report Daily : March 4, 2008

In this week's edition of "The Missing," we will be revisiting the mysterious disappearances of Roxanne Paltauf, an 18-year-old resident of Austin, Texas, who went missing in 2006 and 32-year-old Carlos Diaz of The Bronx, New York, who vanished in 1986.

Roxanne Paltauf

On July 7, 2006, Roxanne Paltauf, 18, disappeared from the Budget Inn hotel in Austin, Texas. According to Roxanne's mother, Elizabeth Harris, Roxanne had been staying at the hotel with her boyfriend. The couple had checked in together with plans of celebrating their two-year anniversary. Unfortunately, the celebration was to be short lived.

"I spoke with Roxanne the night she disappeared and she said she would be home the following day," Elizabeth said in a recent email. "I did not like her boyfriend, he was no good for her and she knew it. He is 12 years older than her and exceptionally controlling of women."

The following day, Roxanne's boyfriend called her mom and asked her if she had seen Roxanne. He allegedly told Elizabeth that they had an argument the previous night and that Roxanne had walked out of the hotel room and left all of her belongings behind.

"He stated that he went after her and she said leave me alone," Elizabeth said. "He said he walked away and went back to room to cool down before going out to look for her again, but was unable to find her. That was almost 20 months ago. The only thing we have to go on is what he had told us."

Despite their best efforts, the Austin Police Department has been unable to find any clues that might suggest what happened to Roxanne. Nonetheless, her mother refuses to give up and continues to do everything she can to get the word out. Elizabeth was able to get America's Most Wanted to bring national attention to the case last year and she recently convinced Regan Advertising to donate billboard space. As a result, Roxanne's photo and information has been appearing on billboards throughout the Austin area. Roxanne's mother has also been using the Internet to help spread the word, by making sure Roxanne's photo is available on every Web site that is dedicated to the missing.

"She did not leave her family on her own accord," Elizabeth said. "Someone has taken her and as her mother, it is my duty to find the truth. I still investigate every outlet I can and I will not stop until my Roxanne is found."

Anyone with information should contact the Austin Police Department at (512) 974-5250 or the Missing Persons Clearinghouse at (512) 424-5074.

For more information on this case, visit the MySpace page Roxanne's mother set up at: http://www.myspace.com/rubibubi.

Hello All

Above is the link to view The Documentary done on my daughter Roxanne Paltauf
It's has been 21 months today since she went missing
My hope is that someone see this and recognize her and bring her home to us, or may in have information regarding the circumstance of her disappearance.
Please share this video with  all you know

I also want to Thank Andy Irvine for taking the time and the interest in doing this for Roxanne
It is another tool that will help us find her hopefully.

Also,  The City Austin Texas is having a debate about the Billboards that are up around town here.
It is suggested that they should be limited or taking down
As you know,  Reagan Advertising has donated space for Roxanne's missing billboard sign and they move it around to get the message out there that she is still missing.
If wasn't for them I will be more difficult to keep her name and face out there for the public to know about her

April 10 th @ 6.00 pm I will be speaking with the City Council on behalf of Roxanne's billboard
The impact of our message and the importance it is on the investigation  in finding her
So I you have spare time and would like to support the cause
Please show up at The City Hall
301 west 2nd Street, Austin Tx

Thanks again for all who has help with support and prayers in our difficult time
God Bless

Police, family search for missing woman

10:31 PM CDT on Thursday, July 3, 2008

By SHELTON GREEN
KVUE News

It's been nearly two years since Roxanne Paltauf vanished from a north Austin motel, and few people are more anxious to find her than the detective handling her case and the teenager's family who waits to hear any word.

"It's just like we can't get out of the sadness.  Everyday is the same and we're just wondering if she's alive and what we haven't done, what more can we do,” said Liz Harris, Roxanne’s mother.

Roxanne Paltauf, 18, was last seen July 7, 2006 at the Budget Inn motel on I-35 and Rundberg.  She was staying there with her boyfriend, the same person who was the last to see her alive.  Paltauf's boyfriend told police the two of them got into an argument and that she simply walked away never to be seen or heard from again.

"I do think that if she was able to contact family, she would.have" said James Scott, the detective handling Paltauf's case for Austin Police.

A billboard featuring Roxanne's picture with the caption "Missing Person" went up a few weeks ago at Highway 183 and north Lamar.  Austin police say they've already received several calls which they're in the process of following up on.

"Somebody out there knows something and the right thing to do is to come forward and let the police department know so we can put this to rest,” said Scott.

Family marks teen's disappearance 2 years later

12:18 PM CDT on Monday, July 7, 2008

By QUITA CULPEPPER
KVUE News

The family of a missing Austin teenager marked a grim anniversary Monday.

Although it's been two years since 18-year-old Roxanne Paltauf was last seen, her family and friends say the one thing they won't do is give up hope.

Paltauf's mother and others started the day off early Monday morning by plastering the area at Rundberg and Interstate 35 with fliers -- putting them on every light pole and in the windows of area businesses.

Paltauf was last seen at a North Austin hotel in 2006. Her boyfriend told police they got into an argument and that Paltauf walked away. He's not considered a suspect at this time.

Liz Harris, Paltauf's mother, says the hardest part is not knowing where she is -- and she thought by now that the mystery of her disappearance would have been solved

“We just want to find Roxanne and find out what happened to her she deserves that and we're doing that to honor her today,” she said.

Along with the fliers and billboards that are up around town, Roxanne’s story is also being featured in a prison newspaper read by inmates throughout Texas.

So far police say they have received one tip, which they’re investigating.

If you have any information about Paltauf's whereabouts, call CrimeStoppers at 472-TIPS.

North Austin residents pledge to kick crime out of their neighborhood

October 4, 2008

The helicopter flying over north Austin wasn't searching for a criminal.

Instead, the spotlight was on those fighting back.

One foot at a time, north Austin residents pledge to kick crime out of their neighborhood.

Jane Aldridge has lived off of Rundberg since 1993.

"I didn't have kids then, so either I was oblivious or it has gotten worse," said Aldridge.

For the second year Saturday night, she and 200 fellow north Austinites, business owners and community leaders, including police chief Art Acevedo - marched down Rundberg to stomp out drugs, prostitution and crime.

Becky Stewart also lives in north Austin and has worked the past year to encourage people to pick up the phone and call police when they see a problem.

"I think we're seeing more awareness in the neighborhood for people to call 911 and report things they may not have before because they understand now that we're all in this together," said Stewart.

Tonight's march happened just feet away from where 18 year old Roxanne Paltauf when missing two years ago.

Her family also marched and says events like this raise awareness and will hopefully bring their daughter home.

"The best thing you can do is keep calling the police and just make the police presence out here just as strong as possible," said Paltauf's mother, Elizabeth Harris.

Austin police say opening the lines of communication is what will pave the way to a safer community.

"You know even those who may be apprehensive about trusting the police and working with us, when they see their friends and neighbors out here doing it, it brings them closer to the solution," said APD patrol officer Michael Youngs.

Squeaky Wheel Tour coming to Poor David’s Pub to profile missing Texans
Saturday, November 1, 2008
By Pegasus News wire

GINA for Missing Persons FOUNDation presents the 3rd International Squeaky Wheel Tour® (SWT), launching October 17, 2008.  The acclaimed 19-day event draws attention to several hundred missing people, each profiled by the musicians participating throughout the US and other countries, and is supported by the families of the missing and nonprofit organizations worldwide.

Clementine, one of the bands performing at Poor David's Pub on November 7.

Musicians participating in SWT earmark their concerts or events to profile a missing person(s) in their community.  They profile that missing person during their show and ask attendees to take a flyer to post throughout their community. Audience members become official GINA Volunteers simply by coming to the events and posting flyers.

This year's tour has reached across international boundaries that take us from England in 1996 to Dallas 2008. Damien Nettles disappeared from Cowes, Isle of Wight, England November 2, 1996. He is both an American and British citizen. His immediate family now lives in Dallas and continues to search for Damien whenever and however possible. Damien's family recently connected with GINA for Missing Persons FOUNDation when GINA was preparing a Squeaky Wheel Tour® web cast profiling UK missing persons to air November 2, 2008 at 2:30 CST www.411Gina.org . The Internet has become a valuable tool to help bridge the gap for families to get information out world-wide about their missing loved ones.

Clementine Band / Mark Wayne Glasmire
When: Friday, Nov. 7, 2008, 8 p.m.
Where: Poor David's Pub, 1313 South Lamar Street, Dallas
Cost: $15
Age limit: 21+

Texas area missing to be profiled are Roxanne Paultauf-Austin, Kimberly Norwood-Longview, Sara Kinslow-Greenville, Troy Grumbine-Irving, Melissa Highsmith-Fort Worth, Brandi Wells-Longview, and Monica Carrasco-Balmorhea.

Jannel Rap, founder of SWT, has intimate knowledge of the missing.  Her sister, musician Gina Bos, disappeared on October 17, 2000.  Because there was no lurid or dramatic circumstance, Gina's case didn't achieve great media attention and was soon forgotten by the community.  In honor of Gina, and knowing how scattered, broken and lost the families of the missing felt, Jannel knew she had to do something. The concept of the Squeaky Wheel Tour® was born.  A musician herself, Jannel used the power of music (and her band, Clementine) to start being the "squeaky wheel" that demands attention.

Mark Wayne Glasmire joins Clementine on stage to play music and profile missing people.

Jannel's LA based band, Clementine is a merging of singer/songwriters on a mission to help educate the public about missing persons cases. Clementine is most known for their musical and lyrical hooks and their unique vocal sound reminiscent of the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac and Crosby Stills Nash and Young. Clementine has shared the stage with Hal Ketchum, Louden Wainwright, Nickel Creek and more.

Mark Wayne Glasmire is joining Clementine at Poor David's. He was a top 10 finalist in the GINA Singer/songwriter Contest of 2008 consequently joining in the family of International GINA Artists. He is a seasoned singer/songwriter with melodies and lyrics that hook you in and make you feel at home while challenging your senses.

850,000 missing persons reports are made each year in the U.S. 110,000 of those cases go unsolved.  To date, over 300 missing people profiled by GINA for Missing Persons FOUNDation and SWT have been found.

From the Family:

Happy Birthday to Roxanne Paltauf, 21 years old.

She is so missed and loved.

We will be hang up missing flyers of her today at Rundberg and IH 35 in honor of her, and hopefully so someone may come forward with some new information on her whereabout or what has happened to her.

This is 3rd bithday we will celebrate without her.

Thanks to Reagan Signs, which has moved her billboard just south of Rundberg and IH35.

We cannot forget who and what Roxanne is:

Who: my daughter and great sister and a wonderful friend
What: Beautiful person all around and very large loving heart

Say a prayer for her.

Wherever she is, I pray the Good Lord will keep her safe and away from any harm. I pray for peace in her soul and that she is not scared or alone and has the peace of God with her.

We will be together again my darling daughter.

Love, Momma xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxooxox
