Families of missing teen Brittanee Drexel gather for support

By Jake Spring

Chad Drexel walked down Ocean Boulevard on Saturday night and pointed across the street, angling his Blackberry to take a picture.

"That's the camera over the visitors center board that got Brittanee," Chad Drexel said.

The camera produced some of the last pictures of Brittanee Drexel, Chad's daughter, before the New York teen disappeared on April 25, 2009.

One year later to the day, the Drexels and a crowd of supporters gathered to march the same length of road where Brittanee was last seen in an event to both remember and raise awareness of missing persons. They marched on Ocean Boulevard from Bar Harbor Motor Inn, where Drexel was staying on a trip to Myrtle Beach, to a candlelight vigil next to the Blue Water Hotel, where she was last seen leaving.

Although one year has passed, the Drexels still speak of Brittanee as if the disappearance was yesterday.

"I drive down the street sometimes and I just start crying," Chad Drexel said. "Because I hear a song or something that just pops in, and 'Oh my God, me and Brittanee used to laugh to this,' or, 'I remember what Brittanee said when this song came on.'"

The family said the march drummed up mixed feelings. Chad Drexel alternately joked about working off their dinner by walking and speculated whether she was snatched while walking the same path he was on.

"Being in this environment makes me feel closer, but it also makes me in pieces," Chad said.

Several other families of missing people joined the march. Signs told of the missing: Megan Maxwell, Brandy Hanna, Bryce Tartar, Jamie Fraley, Crystal Soles and Drexel.

The Drexels have found some solace in joining with these other families, they said. Dawn Drexel, Brittanee's mother, said it helps to talk to people who know what it's like.

"They all have the same hope as the family, as me. Support, love and care," Chad Drexel said.

Gail Soles, the mother of an Andrews woman who went missing, said she has become close with the Drexels. Crystal Soles went missing in 2005 when she was 28, and her mother continues to organize searches for her five years later.

Gail Soles said it helps to talk to people who have experienced the same pain, so she and Dawn talk sometimes. The Soles family also offers simple support, for example, if one of the Drexels' two children, ages 6 and 12, need a place to stay for the night.

Another mother, Christy Davis, had her 26-year-old son Mike Davis go missing in Florida in 2007. Davis befriended the Drexels not long after Brittanee's disappearance. The most important thing is to not give up hope, she said.

"There's always a hole in your heart until you know what happens. It's always my hope to bring him home, alive ... or his remains," Davis said. "Every time you find out remains have been found, you hold your breath."

Davis founded the nonprofit organization Finder's Hope to offer support to families. If she can't bring her child home, she said she hopes she can help bring others home.

The Drexels have also found support from Amber Ready, a company that makes systems to speed police response to missing children. The company also takes on individual cases, offering private investigators and support for events like vigils, said Chief Executive Frank Del Vecchio, who attended the event. The Drexels must keep searching because that's their only hope of moving on, he said.

"When we talk about bringing a resolution, it can either be a happy return of the family member (or) a family member could have had a tragic outcome ... but the family could move on," he said.

Until the family knows what happened, they have to hope she'll be found because that's all they've got, he said.

Dawn Drexel said she thinks of new possibilities every day, she said, from human traffickers to predators. Not knowing what has happened to her daughter has begun to take its toll, she said.

"Emotionally, I mean, we were very upset when she became missing," she said. "I guess you become numb to it."

Chad Drexel said the family continues to experience an emotional roller coaster every day.

"Every day is a nightmare. When I wake up, I don't want to wake up not knowing where my daughter is," Chad Drexel said. "I pray a lot more now, not just because my daughter is missing, but who else am I going to turn to?"

Daughter Disappears On A Cold January Day

It was a cold January 2005 day in Andrews, S.C., when Crystal Soles called her father for a ride home. He was in failing health and was unable to pick her up. Crystal assured her father it was not a problem and told him she would walk home. "That's OK Dad; I will walk" are the last words her loved ones have heard from her in more than five years.

No one knows what happened to Crystal. There have been multiple searches, but no trace of her has ever been found. The CUE Center for Missing Persons has also helped in the search. Earlier this year, Crystal's case became the 10 of diamonds in a deck of cards produced by Effective Playing Cards and distributed in prisons and jails. The playing cards have led to the arrest and conviction of previously unsolved murder cases.

As a family member says, "people in this community knew her and what happened; it breaks my heart as they just go about their lives. All we ask is to get Crystal back and for final answers."

Crystal's family has turned to AMW for help. Please, for Crystal and those that know and love her, make that call to 1-800-CRIME-TV or leave a tip online. Remember: You can remain anonymous.

Crews search new area for Brittanee Drexel

Investigators from three counties who have been working to find a missing New York teenager say they now have “persons of interest” in the case.

By Mason Snyder
Published: November 21, 2010

MCCLELLANVILLE - Around 50 people searched a Charleston County area Sunday for missing New York teen, Brittanee Drexel.

Police units from Georgetown County, Kershaw County and Tallahassee, Florida were all involved in the search efforts.

Monica Caison with the CUE Center for Missing Person’s said horses and K-9 units were used during the search.

The search began at around 8:00 Sunday morning in an area around Old Georgetown Road and Rutledge Road in McClellanville, SC.

Caison said crews searched for Crystal Soles, the 28 year old Andrews girl who went missing in 2005, on Saturday.

That same crew searched for Drexel on Sunday, Caison said.

Dawn Drexel, Brittanee's mother, was at both searches.

Dawn told News 13 there was an “anonymous tip from the community” that prompted the search.

It’s the 47th search day that has been held since Brittanee disappeared.

Brittanee was last seen on April 25, 2009 while on a spring break trip in Myrtle Beach.

Crews searching for missing woman find skeletal remains in Andrews

By Mason Snyder
Published: March 02, 2011

ANDREWS, SC --

Andrews Police Chief Jennifer Flowers says a dive team recovered skeletal remains Wednesday afternoon, thought to possibly be those of a missing Andrews woman.

Crystal Soles, 28, has been missing since Jan. 24, 2005. Her mother told News13 at the time of her disappearance that Soles called her father from the Shaw’s Corner Store in Andrews saying she was on her way home. She never made it home that night.

Missing womans remains found after 6 years, cold case reopened

By Cleve Bryan
Published: March 03, 2011

The discovery of remains in a wooded creek could provide a conclusion to the case of missing Andrews woman.

Crystal Gail Soles disappeared January 24, 2005 and dozens of searches for the 28 year old proved fruitless.

Acting on a tip regarding Soles, Andrews police chief Jennifer Flowers conducted a search Wednesday with the C.U.E. Center for Missing People.

Authorities and volunteers searched a wooded area along Jump and Run Rd off Seaboard Rd in Williamsburg County.

Cadaver dogs lead searchers to a creek where a team of divers found some form of remains.

Chief Flowers is not releasing details of the remains other than to say what searchers found was reflective of information from a recent tip involving Soles disappearance.

Flowers says she is working with a laboratory in Charleston County to examine the evidence and possibly make an identification.

The results may not be available for several weeks.

No word on Andrews skeletal remains ID

Credible tip renews search for missing Andrews woman

Crystal Soles went missing in January 2005.

By Mason Snyder
Published: April 08, 2011

ANDREWS - Down a small dirt road in Andrews, South Carolina sits Soles Farms.

Inside one the two homes sitting on the property is a mother who last saw her daughter six years ago.

"I’m sad but I’d be happy if we could find something to give us a closure. We really need a closure after six years."

Gail Soles has countless memories of when her daughter crystal was still a part of her life.

"Her name was "Frog". We nicked named her "Frog", her two brothers did,” Gail said because Crystal was always sticking her tongue out at everyone when she was a kid.

That young girl turned into a young woman but went missing in January 2005.

She called her dad to ask for a ride home after running errands.

Her dad, who was sick at the time, told her that he couldn’t come get her, so she opted to walk home.

That was the last contact the family had with their daughter.

Police continued to investigate what happened to her that January evening, and they hadn't had much luck until recently.

The latest tip in the case brought investigators here Jumpin' Run Road in Andrews.

It was in the woods where a Horry County Fire Rescue dive team located skeletal remains.

The remains were sent off to Charleston to find out if they were animal remains or human.

Gail soles was there when the team located the remains, but so was somebody else that was very close to Crystal.

Crystal’s eleven year old son Mitchell has also endured pain in missing his mother.

"It’s been hard because other people don't know how hard it is to live without a momma," Mitchell said.

A glass case in Mitchell’s room is full of things that remind him of the five short years he had with his mom.

But Mitchell’s favorite item is a picture of his mom that he holds so tightly, few could pry it loose.

And now Mitchell and his grandmother wait on times turn in the waiting game.

"Its been hell, it really has,” said Gail. “Not knowing and worrying, not sleeping at night. I’m up and down all night. I just don't rest good."

"It’s hard to [go on], but I just have to keep on going knowing that you can't go back in time," said Mitchell.

Gail said that she spoke with Andrews Police Friday and they still don't have the results back on the remains.

Police identify remains found during search for missing woman

By Mark Meredith, WMBF News Reporter

ANDREWS, SC (WMBF) - After six months of tests, the Andrews Police Department has determined that remains found during a search for Crystal Soles are not that of the missing woman. After forensic review, the remains appear to be that of an animal and not of a human.

Investigators discovered the remains during a search in March near Jumpin Run Road while searching for the missing woman. Crystal Soles vanished while walking home from the Shaw Corner Store back in January of 2005.

Offender tied to 2 missing women
'Person of interest' in Drexel, Soles cases

BY ALLYSON BIRD
Saturday, February 18, 2012

[Excerpt..]

Police Capt. David Knipes identified the man as a 51-year-old Georgetown resident convicted of raping a child decades ago in another state. Knipes released the man's name, but The Post and Courier does not identify people designated as a "person of interest" in a criminal case unless authorities name the person as a suspect.

[Excerpt..]

Georgetown County sheriff's spokeswoman Carrie Cuth- bertson confirmed Friday that the man also remains a person of interest in the 2005 disappearance of 28-year-old Crystal Soles.

"We cannot eliminate him at this time, because he is refusing to cooperate," Cuthbertson said.

Families remember loved ones that are missing

by Brianna Smith

Posted: 10.06.2012 at 7:01 PM

ANDREWS, SC (WPDE) - Four families gathered Saturday afternoon in Andrews to remember their loved ones that have disappeared.

Crystal Gail Soles of Andrews has been missing since 2005. Her mother organized the event calling it a Walk of Remembrance.

The families of Brittanee Drexel, Brandon Graves, Crystal Soles, and Gabbiee Swainson gathered with posters in hand, hoping to keep hope alive for their loved one's missing person cases.

"You've got to keep their name and their face out there, every missing child, cause it could bring in tips and leads for their case," said Dawn Drexel.

All of these missing person cases have been involved with CUE Center for Missing Persons. Monica Caison is the founder of CUE and says it's important for families who are missing someone to support each other.

"Whenever someone gets missing within our organization, we actually build the base underneath them with other families," said Caison.

Saturday's event was called a walk of remembrance, but the families also say it was one of hope.

There will be a candlelight vigil tomorrow at 7 p.m. for Brittanee Drexel at the site of her tree planted on Farrow Parkway at The Market Common.

On Friday, October 12 there will be an event for Brandon Graves at the halftime of the Dillon High School football game.

Women found in Ohio sparks hope for local missing person cases

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -
It's the phone call Gail Soles hopes to one day hear from her daughter.

"I've been kidnapped and I've been missing for ten years, and I'm here, I'm free now," Amanda Berry cried out.

After police rescued Berry, two other woman, and a six-year-old from a house in Ohio, many families of missing person have a renewed sense of hope.

"It gives me so much hope. I'll never give up now, never ever. I just know one day we're going to find  Crystal," Gail said.

Gail said in the past eight years many people gave up on her daughter.

"You know you just don't quit on your kids, no matter what you just don't," Gail said.

But she isn't alone in the fight to find a missing child.

"With Brittanee being missing, you have to keep their name and face out there. You have to keep the awareness going," Dawn Drexel said.

Since Brittanee's disappearance in 2009, her family kept searching.

"There is hope, and that should not discourage any families from the chance of finding their child alive," Dawn said.

George Graham works with the CUE Center for Missing Persons where he helped with searches for Crystal and Brittanee.

"That's what this case brought up, there's always hope that they are alive but until you find out otherwise, you just don't know," Graham said.

He said each case brings a new awareness to what happened in the past.

"Some of them won't pan out, but you never know when it will and that's the hope whenever you mention somebody missing that someone will call," Graham said.

And while many questions still linger, there's one thing both mothers said will never change.

"I'm never going to give up, she's my baby, my baby girl. The only daughter I ever had. And I will never ever, as long as I can I'm going to be finding my child one way or the other," Gail said.

CUE conducts search for Crystal Soles, missing since 2005

Posted: Aug 18, 2013 1:18 PM PST

GEORGETOWN COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – Crystal Soles was 28-years-old when she was last seen in Andrews, SC, while walking home from the Shaw Corner Store in January 2005. The CUE conducted a search in Georgetown County on Saturday night for the missing woman.

Monica Caison with the CUE Center said the search concluded last night around 7 p.m. There were certain areas in the search that they were unable to get to because of recent rain, but searched the area the best they could. The CUE brought in their own resources for the search, and they said it is important to keep looking.

Caison said there will be a new billboard for Soles out in Andrews soon. A spokesperson for the CUE said that anytime there is a search for Crystal Soles, they will also look for Brittnee Drexel, who was 17 when she went missing in 2009.

Since then investigators and volunteer search teams have done numerous searches for Soles, many times using dogs and horses to help look for clues.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the anonymous tip line, Crime Stoppers. That number is 1-888-CRIME-S-C.

A look back on missing persons cases after human remains discovered

Posted: Dec 30, 2013 8:02 PM EST

Updated: Dec 30, 2013 8:04 PM EST

By Mandy Noell

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Two women were reported missing in Horry County within a week. Days later, bare-bone skeletal remains were discovered on Tidewater Road. Since the remains were found, online speculation has run rampant about who the remains may belong to.

"They're definitely human bones," said Horry County Coroner Robert Edge. "At this point, we're not sure how long they've been there, but apparently at least a year for that much decomp(osition) to have occurred."

Dating back a year, there have been four missing-person cases in the area since 2005.

Brittanee Drexel has become a household name in the Grand Strand since she disappeared while on spring break in Myrtle Beach in April 2009. The mystery surrounding the case of the then- 17-year-old made national headlines. Drexel was seen on a camera leaving her hotel on Ocean Blvd and was never seen again.

Since her disappearance, search parties have scoured the Myrtle Beach area looking for any trace of Drexel, who would be 22-years-old today, to no avail.

Crystal Soles was 28-years-old when she went missing. She was walking home from a store in Andrews in January 2005, and vanished. Like Drexel, there has been search after search conducted for Soles, many by the CUE Center, and as recent as August 2013, but she has never been found.

The last person to have seen Kareem Ward in June 2007 was his mother. According to the police report, she said he was in his car by himself. Just days after his disappearance, his car was pulled from the Little Pee Dee River. The police report said a cell phone was also in the car, but Kareem was never located.

Susan Deluca was supposed to be traveling North to visit family in April 2010, but she never made it. Her family soon reported her missing, and two months later, cadaver dogs found her car submerged, like Ward's, in the Little Pee Dee River. Like the above, Deluca's case was never solved.

It's important to know that the remains found on tidewater road might not belong to any of these people. But someone, somewhere may soon receive a bittersweet answer to a very long-awaited question.

Anyone with information on the disappearances of any of these individuals is encouraged to call the anonymous tip line, Crime Stoppers. That number is 1-888-CRIME-S-C.

WPDE NewsChannel 15 is highlighting missing persons cases from around our area who are part of the Cue Center for Missing Persons website. Click here for information on the missing in our area.

Crystal Soles has been missing since January 24, 2005.

She was last seen at Shaw's Corner Store in Andrews in Georgetown County. She talked with her father on the phone and told him she would walk home.

She hasn't been seen since.

Crystal was 28 when she disappeared. She's 5'5" and 135 pounds. She has blonde hair and blue eyes.

In August 2013, investigators received new information they hoped would lead to her whereabouts. With the help of dozens of volunteers, law enforcement and the CUE Center for Missing Persons searched a wooded area of Georgetown County for her. She was not found. At the time of the search, Crystal's mother Gail Soles told us, "Crystal knows we're out here looking. And she knows Mom, Mom's never going to give up."
