Dori Myers cold case: Sibling searches for sister missing for 8 years
SLC woman abducted and home torched in 2006

By: Jon Shainman By: Jon Shainman
ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. - Donajean Kapp doesn't visit the old Lakewood Park home of her sister very often.
In January of 2006, arsonists struck the home of Dori Ann Myers.
"That's where it was. It was in this room, by this bedroom and the front door," said Kapp as she points out where the fire started behind the still boarded up windows
Two pets of Myers were killed and she was abducted. Her car was found three hours later, and 80 miles away at a boat ramp in Glades County.
Her body has never been found, but eight years seems like eight minutes ago to Kapp.
"I can see her running out that door and jumping up on me and giving me hugs you know," said Kapp tearfully.
The St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office looks at this case monthly, but no one knows what happened to Myers.
Myers has officially been declared dead but Kapp, who now lives in North Florida, hopes to organize a search through the Cue Center For Missing Persons , an organization she now volunteers for.
"I'm ready for whatever resolution there is, I just want some answers. I want to know what happened and I want justice for her," said Kapp.
If you have any information on where Dori Ann Myers is, contact the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office or Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers at 1-800-273-TIPS.

This month's edition honors those missing during the Christmas and New Year's holidays. This time of year can bring excruciating pain to the families of missing persons. Traditions are shattered as families try to make sense of a traumatic event and how each facet of life is altered, especially moments and days we expect to be joy-filled. They struggle to recapture the meaning of the season when dark thoughts and fears prevail.
With your help to spread the word about these missing persons, families are once again given hope, and then the world seems to come alive again for them with the goodness and light that comes from kindness and love for one another.
If you are so moved, please consider Project Jason and the families of the missing in your charitable donation giving plan. Project Jason and CDLjobs.com extend our warmest holiday wishes to you and yours.

Sister of long missing Lakewood Park woman keeps memory, fight alive
6/16/16
By Nicholas Samuel of TCPalm
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — When Dori Ann Myers disappeared from her Lakewood Park home on Jan. 11, 2006, the only clues to her disappearance were her house and car engulfed in flames.
Ten years later, Donajean Kapp keeps her sister's memory alive by distributing posters and "justice4Dori" bracelets at the annual Community United Effort Center for Missing Persons conference in Wilmington, North Carolina, where she volunteers as a Florida outreach coordinator.
She started as a volunteer for the nonprofit shortly after her sister's disappearance. Now she produces missing person posters, conference posters and booklets for families with a missing relative.
Whoever did this to her sister "tried to extinguish all signs of her by setting her house and car on fire, but she was full of life," Kapp said. "This case is so odd. It doesn't make any sense."
She finds her work rewarding, particularly because of the mystery that surrounds her sister's disappearance.
"It's healing to talk to other families that are new to this. You can give them comfort because you've already been there," Kapp said. "People want you to forget about it. Until I find out what happened to her, I can't let it go."
Ron Wentz, the detective assigned to Myers' case at the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office, said he spoke with Kapp in January, the month of the 10-year anniversary of her sister's disappearance.
"She was very emotional. Every phone call is emotional," Wentz said. "They have no closure."
Kapp, 56, of Jasper in North Florida, said there was nothing new Wentz could tell her about the investigation.
She said her little sister, whom she called her little tag-along, spoke her mind and was her best friend. She said they both solved puzzles together.
She cried as she read a poem she wrote dedicated to Myers after she disappeared.
"My heart is breaking and always aching for my little tag-along," Kapp read. "Please come home little sis, there are so many things we have to see. Please come home and tag-along with me."
For the first three years after her disappearance, detectives interviewed hundreds of people and searched in four counties for Myers, Wentz said.
The case is still alive and detectives have continued to look into the Lakewood Park and Glades County areas. However, there haven't been any promising leads or new information.
Myers' car was found completely burned in Glades County three hours after she disappeared. Wentz is the only detective still working the case since it began, Kapp said.
"I appreciate that he will not give up on the case," Kapp said. "That gives me hope."
WHAT HAPPENED
Kapp said Myers was a successful hair dresser who rented a booth at a hair salon in Vero Beach.
"She had the same clients for years," Kapp said.
The day Myers disappeared, she was last seen at the St. Lucie Inn in the 2100 block of Old Dixie Highway, where she met two men, according to the missing person site.
The men told Myers they were Marines wounded in Iraq and they needed a place to stay for the night.
She made her last phone call at 9:30 p.m. to her ex-boyfriend Joe Jones and told him she made up a bed for one of the Marines on her sofa and one for the other on a foldout bed, the missing person site shows.
Neighbors said they heard loud noises coming from the Lakewood Park house about 12:30 a.m. and saw Myers' 1998 black Toyota sedan drive from the house about 3 a.m. as a fire began.
"They didn't see her driving the car, but they heard the car leaving," Kapp said.
Firefighters responded to the fire about 3: 15 a.m. at Myers' home in the 8400 block of Salerno Road, where they found the two-bedroom, single-family home engulfed in flames.
Kapp said her sister was not home during the blaze, but both her pets died in the fire. Detectives said they believe the Marines took Myers by force.
"They're still out there; that's a scary thought," Kapp said.
Deputies from the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office found Myers' car burned three hours later near a public boat ramp in Moore Haven in Glades County, 80 miles from her Lakewood Park home.
NEVER GIVE UP
Kapp said Myers, who was 43 at the time of her disappearance, has been declared legally dead since 2007.
"We're looking for any evidence related to her disappearance, logically including her body," Wentz said.
Myers' son, Jesse King, 31, said he feels like her disappearance is now a cold case.
"Detectives are doing all they can. It doesn't get any easier," King said.
National TV shows such as "Nancy Grace" and the Fox News show "On the Record with Greta Van Susteren" both aired coverage of the Myers case in 2006, Kapp said.
Dale L. Curry pushed to get his daughter's case on the TV show "America's Most Wanted".
Curry died April 22, 2015. His last wish was to set up a billboard for Myers and to know she wasn't forgotten until justice was served, Kapp said.
"We're working to find someone who will donate the space," Kapp said.
To date, Florida has 37 missing people.
Besides Myers, the Treasure Coast has another missing person — Patrick DiFrancesco of Fort Pierce.
He was 24 at the time of his disappearance and was last seen at a friend's house on Sunrise Drive in the city on Aug. 26, 1985.
Kapp said deep in her heart, she will never get over the fact it has been 10 years and her sister is still missing.
"So much time has gone by and the circumstances are horrible," Kapp said. "I just want to know what happened."
