Family holds out hope for missing man
Posted at: 07/08/2008 04:13:32 PM

It was one year ago that a teenager from Churchville disappeared without a trace. The family of Brian Sullivan is still holding out hope that he'll be found alive.

Sullivan was 19 when he was last seen on Lettington Avenue July 7, 2007. Today his family, sheriff's deputies and officials from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children met in that exact place.

New posters with Sullivan’s picture will be handed out at the Wal-Mart in Gates and his family is also offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to his whereabouts.

Brain’s cousin, Katie Towner, said, “Anyone who knows where Brian is or what may have happened to him, please come forward and let this family have some peace. We will never move on or forget Brian. Our search will never stop. Thank you.”

Lamar Advertising is creating a billboard to help generate new leads in the case.

Chili family seeks clues, answers in son's disappearance

Ernst Lamothe Jr. • Staff writer • July 9, 2008

GATES — Time doesn't necessarily heal all wounds, especially not for families waiting on news of a missing, loved one.

Barbara Sullivan has been waiting a year for her 19-year-old son, Brian, to come back into her arms, waiting to hear his voice, waiting to see his face.

"It just gets harder every day I would say," said Sullivan of Chili. "It definitely isn't getting any easier."

Brian Sullivan, also of Chili, was last seen July 8, 2007, at the Burger King restaurant in Gates. His red 1995 Pontiac Sunfire was found nearby.

There were no signs of foul play in or around the vehicle. Searchers combed about 100 acres near where Sullivan was last seen.

Since his disappearance, the Sullivan family has worked with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and created a poster, linking it to its Web site for national exposure. Expanding the search nationally has not yielded significant clues to his whereabouts.

"I am hoping to bring awareness back to the public and let people know he is still missing," said Sullivan. "We've been in contact with the police and so far there are no new leads."

The family met Tuesday at Lettington Avenue in Gates, the last place Sullivan was seen. They had hoped that the holidays last year might bring news, with people coming back to the area for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Last year the family offered $1,000 for any information leading to his discovery. On Tuesday, they increased the offer to $2,500.

Sullivan is a 2006 graduate of Churchville-Chili High School. He went to Monroe Community College that summer and again in the fall of 2006 and spring of 2007. During the first two terms, he worked in the college bookstore and saved enough money to pay for his car.

Pam Weaver, director of community education at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, said it is important to bring the case back to the forefront.

"We are hoping someone will look at his picture again and it will trigger a memory since this is still a cold case," she said. "The family is hopeful and prayerful that they will get some kind of answers. Their son is still missing and it's simply a parent's worst nightmare right now."

Family hopes billboard will help in search for missing man

Tue Sep 02, 2008, 07:23 AM EDT

When Barbara Sullivan drives down Chili Avenue, her son gazes down at her.

Brian's picture is high in the sky, on a billboard on the busy roadway. There's a number on it, too, asking for people to call if they know where he is.

Seeing her son's image is "good and bad," Barbara said. "Good because it’s up there and people are seeing it but bad because it’s like a reality check.”

Brian Sullivan was 19 when he disappeared July 7, 2007. The Churchville man's whereabouts are a mystery. Police know he visited the Chili Avenue Burger King at 5:38 a.m. Shortly after, he called a friend.

His red 1995 Pontiac Sunfire was found in front of a 100–acre wooded area on nearby Lettington Avenue.

In the following days, Monroe County Sheriff's deputies, U.S. Army Reserve troops, members of the Gates-Chili Fire Department and others searched the woods three times while a State Police helicopter flew overhead.

Nothing.

"It seems like I should be pinched or woken up or something," Barbara said. "It's been unreal, very difficult, but we've had a lot of support from friends and family and the community and people from the Myspace and different groups who have helped us just keep his name and picture posted."

The billboard is the latest public effort Barbara and Daniel Sullivan, Brian's parents, have made to find their son. There's been a balloon release, media appearances, and work with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The family also maintains a page on the Myspace social networking site in hopes of getting Brian's name out there.

"We're just hoping to spark some more interest," Barb said. "They offered it to us at cost per month so we're going to try to keep it up as much as we can."

Those efforts give families something to cling to, said Sue Anne Agone, a clinical manager and therapist with Unity Health System.

Agone, who used to work at National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, said just doing something can help ease the anxiety and helplessness families in these situations often feel.

It's "one of the ways that families would bond together and stay close and keep the community informed," she said. "It's a way of not letting the world forget there is a child out there."

Since his disappearance, Brian's missed the holidays, his birthday, and the birth of his nephew. His sister, Brittney Murphy, gave birth to a little boy named Kaleb.

"(He) will bring a smile to my face," Barbara said.

But, reality intrudes. Barbara can't believe it's been more than a year since she's seen her son. The time has gone by fast. She talks with the Sheriff's office every other week, if not every week. The department has been "very good" to us, she said. What she really wants to know is why Brian is missing.

"There's no reason for this," she said. “We’re just hopeful that he did just take off. That’s our hope and (that) he’ll contact us.”

If Brian is out there, his mom is hoping he'll send a letter or a text message –– "anything," she said, to let his family know he's okay.

And for his family to let him know there's a little baby boy who wants to meet his uncle.

Chili family gives DNA for missing person program

Ernst Lamothe Jr. • Staff writer • April 19, 2009

Barbara Sullivan hasn't given up hope yet. But she said she gets more realistic with every day her son Brian remains missing.

Brian, who would turn 21 this year, was last seen July 7, 2007, at the Burger King on Chili Avenue in Gates. His red 1995 Pontiac Sunfire was found nearby with no signs of foul play in or around the vehicle.

At first, Sullivan thought he might have gone somewhere with a friend and would soon be back. As weeks passed, her nervousness rose as three sweeps around the Gates area by Monroe County Sheriff's deputies yielded nothing.

Now she realizes there is a possibility her son might not walk back into her home again.

Sullivan and her husband, Daniel, of Chili were among the many relatives of 16 missing people who gave the state a sample of their DNA, hoping it would help New York in its effort to locate their loved ones, even if they've been found dead somewhere. New York is part of the growing national effort to match genetic material with the DNA of thousands of unidentified dead across the country.

"The fact that there are people just lying in morgues not being identified while family members still keep out hope is horrible," said Sullivan, who attended Missing Persons Day in Albany recently. "The fact that New York is offering this kind of program to help families find some kind of conclusion to their pain is wonderful."

Using DNA from close relatives, labs can establish a genetic profile, which can be matched against DNA profiles of those found dead without any identification.

New York's Department of Criminal Justice Services is sending its DNA samples from relatives of the missing to a lab in Texas, where it takes four to six months to process and upload into the national Combined DNA Index System. Nationwide, about 100,000 people are officially missing in America, according to the FBI, though advocates believe that figure is far higher.

Barbara Sullivan first heard about the DNA program the morning she arrived in Albany. After some trepidation, she decided to take part. "It's an uneasy feeling because this means if they call us, that means that he is not with us anymore," she said. "And it actually reminded me that Brian has been missing for two years and that is difficult to deal with."
(2 of 2)

Since July 2007, the Sullivan family has worked with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and created a poster of Brian, which is linked to the center's Web site for national exposure. Hoping a financial incentive provides some answers, the family has offered a $1,000 reward for information that leads to his recovery, but still no answers.

"It just doesn't get any easier, and I'm surprised that I am not crying talking about this. It must be one of my good days," said Barbara Sullivan. "And when we heard there was a body found in the Erie Canal in Gates last week, we held our breath and thought, 'Maybe that could be Brian,' and while we were thankful that it wasn't him, it still was emotionally gut-wrenching."

At least five states — Texas, California, Florida, New Jersey and Oregon — require medical examiners and coroners to take DNA records of their unidentified dead, said George Adams, program director for the University of North Texas Center for Human Identification. Similar legislation is pending in New York.

New York plans to provide DNA collections requested by relatives of the state's other missing, who officially numbered 3,472 in early April. In 2004, medical examiners and coroners reported 13,486 unidentified deceased on record nationally. The Bureau of Justice Statistics noted that only half of those offices had a policy for retaining records on the unknown.

Ed Suk, executive director of the New York chapter of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, said the new DNA database is an excellent use of technology that could solve so many "awful situations." He views requiring coroners' offices nationwide to take DNA samples of unidentified remains is long overdue. "It's staggering the number of missing adults and children who go unidentified, and since we have the technology, we should use it to our advantage," said Suk.

Have You Seen This Missing Man -- Brian Sullivan?

Reported by: Sean Carroll
Last Update: 7/08 8:30 pm

(Rochester, N.Y.) -  Brian Sullivan was just 19 when he went missing two years ago. He was last seen around 5:30 a.m. at a Chili Avenue Burger King. His car was later found a half-mile away with his wallet still inside.

Authorities combed the nearby woods--and missing-persons flyers and billboards have been circulated throughout the community ever since.

For Brian's parents and sister, every day is a reminder of the unknown.

"It is a realization that it is two years, but we really don't need that reminder,” said his mother Barbara Sullivan. “We remember every single morning when we wake up, or in the middle of the night."

"But you push through, you got to push through,” Brian’s Father Daniel Sullivan said. “You've got to go through your day, and there's other things happening…but we do get through it."

This year Sullivan's parents submitted their DNA, and also Brian's to a nationwide database in the hopes that it could help if their son is ever found.

Mystery of missing Chili man: two years later

Two years ago Wednesday a Chili teenager disappeared without a trace. Brian Sullivan would be 21-years-old now. His family feels the pain every day, and they want answers.

Wednesday evening family and friends gathered to share memories and hope. The met on Buffalo Road where a billboard stands with the message, "Where's Brian?"

"I think of Brian constantly," Daniel Sullivan said of his son through trembling lips. "Somebody just doesn't disappear."

But it seems Brian Sullivan did. No clues. Not even a trace.

"You wake up, and it's the first thought that comes to your mind," said Barb Sullivan. Days, months and now even years have passed since she's seen her son. But this family's hope holds fast.

"Never lose hope," said Daniel Sullivan. "You lose hope and what else do you have?"

Barb Sullivan added, "It's all we have to hold on to is that he's still out there."

Brian's cousin Katie Towner was one of dozens of family and friends who came out Wednesday for the candlelight vigil.

"We definitely think that something happened that morning of July 8, 2007," said Towner.

Sunday, July 8th at 5:38 a.m., police say Brian stopped at a Burger King on Chili Avenue in Gates. He ordered a breakfast sandwich, cinnamon rolls and milk. Shortly after, he made a cell phone call to a friend at 6:10 a.m. He left a voicemail joking about a rap song he made up.

That's the last anyone has heard from him.

His car, a red Sunfire, was found near the woods at the end of Lettington Avenue in Gates. His wallet was inside. The doors were locked.

"This family needs answers, and Brian deserves justice," said Towner.

And they're not giving up until they bring Brian home.

"Don't forget about my baby brother," said sister Brittney Murphy. "If you know something, say something."

And these parents, broken with pain, say love your kids each and every day.

"You don't know what you got until their gone," said Daniel Sullivan. "(A) piece of my heart's missing."

This remains an active case. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate any and all leads. Anyone with information on the disappearance of Brian Sullivan is asked to call 911. There is a reward.

Chili family still searching for son

By Mike Murphy, staff writer
Gates-Chili Post
Posted Jul 08, 2009 @ 09:28 PM

Gates, N.Y. — Two years ago today, Brian Sullivan’s red Pontiac Sunfire was found abandoned at the end of Lettington Avenue in Gates. His wallet and debit card were found inside the car, as was a Burger King receipt time-stamped 5:38 a.m. July 8.

Sullivan, however, has not been seen by friends and family since he left the Gates restaurant. He left a voice mail with a friend at 6:10 a.m. that morning, and hasn’t been heard from since.

About 50 people gathered for a candlelight vigil at the corner of Mt. Read Boulevard and Buffalo Road, near a huge billboard bearing a photo of how he looked two years ago and another photo showing how he might look today.

His cousin, Katie Towner, flanked by his parents Dan and Barbara Sullivan of Chili, spoke at the vigil. Towner said nothing indicated he would just take off, although they now hope that’s what he did.

“The Brian we know wouldn’t do this,” she said. “After two years with no word from Brian, it has been hard to stay positive. Those of us who know Brian best feel something happened on the morning of July 8, 2007.

“We aren’t going to give up until we find out what, and bring him home.”

Sullivan, a Churchville-Chili High School graduate, is 5-feet 11-inches tall, and weighs 170 pounds. He was 19 when he went missing. Anyone with information is asked to call 1-800-the-lost.

The family also asked everyone to say a prayer for Sullivan, and pleaded for someone to provide information on where he is.

“Somebody out there knows what happened to our Brian,” Towner said. “Please come forward. It has been two years now, and we are doing are best to remain hopeful. But this family needs answers, and Brian deserves justice.”

Vigil Held for Missing Man

Authorities combed the nearby woods and missing-persons flyers and billboards have been circulated throughout the community ever since.

On Wednesday night, his family and friends came together to remember him and emphasize that they aren't giving up hope.

Brian’s mother, Barbara Sullivan, said, “We're just trying to hope somebody will see this, get out the word that Brian's still missing and we need some help finding him. It seems like somebody has the key to the answer of where he is and we need that.”

For Brian's parents and sister, every day is a reminder of the unknown.

"It is a realization that it is two years, but we really don't need that reminder,” Barbara Sullivan said. “We remember every single morning when we wake up, or in the middle of the night."

This year Sullivan's parents submitted their DNA, and also Brian's, to a nationwide database in the hopes that it could help if their son is ever found.

Investigators say they're still working the case regularly and interview new inmates at the Monroe County Jail to see if they know something.

Anyone who might have information that could help authorities is urged to call CrimeStoppers at (585) 423-9300. Callers do not have to leave their names and could receive a cash reward if that information leads to an arrest.

Doug Comanzo, an investigator for the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, said, "We still think there's people out there that have information that could share it with us…Just a little piece would be enough to tip it over the top for us."

Website brings new hope to local family with missing son

Posted at: 03/31/2010 7:41 AM | Updated at: 03/31/2010 8:51 AM

A Gates mother has new hope for finding her son, and now Barb Sullivan is trying to bring hope to other parents of missing children.

Her son, Brian Sullivan, went missing nearly three years ago. His name and DNA have been submitted to an online clearinghouse called NAMUS.

NAMUS stands for the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System. Police, coroners and medical examiners can use the site to help solve cases.

Barb Sullivan believes the database could help bring her closure in her son's disappearance. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office is already utilizing the site.

Click here http://www.namus.gov/ to check out the database.

Brian Sullivan was last seen at the Burger King on Chili Avenue in Gates. His car was found empty on a nearby street.

The pain of not knowing what happened, the family says, is torture. They are convinced somebody knows something so they're trying a technique that's worked in other missing persons cases -- playing cards.

They are putting Brian’s face on cards that will be used by inmates at area jails. Every card has a face and a name, every card comes with a heartbreaking mystery and hope that someone will see a face they recognize and come forward with information.

Brian Sullivan's face now appears on these cards along with other missing persons put out by the Center for Hope. His family is hoping for closure.

Sullivan was last seen at the Burger King on Chili Avenue in Gates on July 8, 2007. His car was found abandoned on a nearby street with his wallet locked inside.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Department has followed up on hundreds of leads but there's still no sign of Brian Sullivan.

Drew Forsythe of the Monroe County Sheriff's Department said, “Most of us up here all have family and children so we understand the pain that they're going through. As professionals it makes it that much worse when we can't give them the answers that they're looking for."

Today the Sullivan family announced they are donating 150 decks of these cards to area jails.

His mother is realistic but she is prepared for the worst. Like any mother, she simply must know what happened to her son. “As a family we need to know, we need to know where he is, if he's out there, we need to know, if he's not, we need to know so we can bring him home."

These cards can be helpful in turning up clues. The Center for Hope says in a previous printing of these cards, eight indictments came out of the 52 cards that were a part of that deck.

This strategy of using playing cards is also being used by Brittanee Drexel’s family -- another teenager from Chili who disappeared without a trace.

Still No Sign of Chili Man Missing for Three Years

By: Greg Johnston

It has been three years since a Chili man went missing, and his family is once again asking for the public's help in finding him.

The family of Brian Sullivan is also hoping its latest effort will uncover information that will lead to his whereabouts. The Sullivans have had 150 decks of cards made that feature the faces of missing people and the victims of unsolved homicides.

Brian's photo is on the three of spades. The cards will be distributed to jails and prisons in hopes of uncovering new leads.

"We just need the help. We don't know what else to do," said Brian's mother, Barbara Sullivan. "We can only do so much, and we do rely on the public because someone does know something."

"We've followed up on several hundred leads with nothing that's panned out to help us try and locate him," Drew Forsythe of the Monroe County Sheriff's Department said. "Obviously, we're classifying this as a missing person's investigation, but there's the possibility that foul play occurred - and any information at all is what we're looking for."

Sullivan was last seen around 5:30 a.m. on July 8, 2007 at the Burger King on Chili Avenue in Gates. His car was discovered at the end of a nearby street.

Sheriff's investigators ask anyone with information to call 911.

Missing Person Case

Brian Sullivan has been missing for three years. He was last seen at a Burger King on Chili Avenue in the Town of Gates.

Thursday, July 8, 2010

A local family marked a grim three year anniversary on Thursday.

On July 8th of 2007 19-year-old Brian Sullivan went missing after last having been seen at a Burger King on Chili Avenue in the Town of Gates.
His car was found nearby with his wallet and license inside.

WHAM News asked Monroe County Sheriff's Captain Drew Forsythe if the sheriff's department continues to get leads in connection with the case.

He says, "in the beginning of the investigation there was a lot more leads of sightings, you know I saw him here, I saw him there, and over the years those leads have certainly dwindled. We do periodically still get information that we follow up."

Katie Towner is Sullivan's cousin and she says her family has done a lot to keep this an active case.

She says, "we do a lot of work on the computer, we have many, many friends in the missing person community that we've met through Brian's disappearance and we all kind of try to help each other and keep the word out there and support each other."

Towner says as time passes the case gets turned over to different investigators, but she says all of them have been helpful.

The Drexel and Sullivan families: "Not a club you want to be in"

Posted at: 08/23/2010 7:10 AM | Updated at: 08/24/2010 12:23 AM By: Berkeley Brean | WHEC.com

The parents of Brian Sullivan and Brittanee Drexel have two things in common.

They live in Chili.

And one of their children is missing.

And because they're going through something that only they can relate to, the Sullivans and the Drexels have forged a new friendship.

Two years ago Dawn Drexel and Barbara Sullivan had no idea who the other was. But now they share a common bond -- a missing child. Drexel's daughter Brittanee disappeared in Myrtle Beach in April 2009. Sullivan's son Brian was last seen at a Burger King in Gates three years ago.

"Some days might be a little bit better but still when you wake up every morning and you realize he's still missing, it's hard. it's very hard," Sullivan said.

It's not that the two of them are inseparable, but they have developed a close relationship.

"She's like my sister now. It's funny," Sullivan said. "We lean on each other."

"Barb and (Brian's father) Dan are wonderful," Dawn Drexel said. "It's great to have someone else to talk to that knows what you're going through. They're like family to us."

"It's not a club you want to be in but it's a supportive club," Chad Drexel, Brittanee's father, said. "Support each other when we can."

Tonight it was a big family get-together. A fundraiser for the agency that is trying to find both Brian and Brittanee. Close to 150 people showed up, donated money and bought raffle tickets. But eventually the party ends and the Sullivan's and Drexels are left with each other.

"So together we're trying to do this to keep our children's name out there," Sullivan said. "And hopefully this won't happen to somebody else."

The group getting money tonight is called the Cue Center. It's lead a lot of the searches for Brittanee down in South Carolina. The Cue Center helped close a 28 year missing person cold case last year. The year before it helped solve an 11 year cold case.

300 bicyclists participate in 11th annual Ride for Missing Children

Posted at: 05/20/2011 9:05 AM

Despite the rain, hundreds of bicyclists just hit the road in the last hour to Ride for the Missing. It's a 100 mile bike ride around Monroe County.

More than 300 bicyclists took off from the Total Sports Experience in Gates at 8 a.m. Friday morning. It's all about raising awareness about missing and exploited children.

The fundraiser for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children means a lot to one Chili mom. Her son Brian Sullivan has been missing since July 2007. She says having a missing child is the worst experience anyone could ever have. “I'm here because my son Brian who will be missing four years in July but also even when he's found, I'm still going to come here because this means a lot to me.”

Anyone with information on the disappearance of Brian Sullivan is asked to call 911.

This marks the 11th year for the Ride for the Missing.

Missing Upstate New York Man: Brian Sullivan, 19, disappeared in July 2007

Posted by Barry Leibowitz
June 7, 2011 11:08 AM

(CBS) - Brian Sullivan was 19, living with his parents in Chili, N. Y., in Monroe County, when he disappeared in July 2007.

Sullivan was last seen July 8, 2007 at the Burger King on Chili Avenue in Gates, a western suburb of Rochester.

CBS affiliate WROC reported that Sullivan's red Pontiac was found later that day on nearby Lettington Avenue; the doors were locked, and his wallet was in the car.

Sullivan's sister says Brian's last known communication with anyone was early that morning: "He called his best friend a little bit after 6...left him a voicemail...and then after that there was no cell activity, no text messages since his disappearance."

11:08 AM, Jul. 8, 2011
Written by Tina Yee and Gary McLendon

Family and friends of Brian Sullivan gathered at the corner of Chili Avenue and Cairn Street this morning to make sure Sullivan, who disappeared four years ago today, is not forgotten.

“We’re working in hopes that we’re going to find something, that somebody knows something,” said Sullivan’s aunt Caroline Pepper. “This is too painful for the family. With more time, it’s been more painful for the family.”

Sullivan was 19 when he was last seen at 5:38 a.m. July 8, 2007, at the Burger King restaurant on Chili Avenue in Gates.
